i doubt many people use 98se on dualcore or new motherboards.not because it wont work but because there design for xp .most folk tend too run 98se on boards or pcs a little older.

i get the cant find ntrl all the time so i just pop in a win98 startup disk and enter a:sys c: and it sorts it out find.

firefox kinda sucks because u need to download a dozen plugins for java media etc where with ie u dont nuff said.

agreed.Ived been saying its customer base that drives decisions on drivers for platforms.link21 think whining in a forum will catch the attention of every dev in the world dream on and after vista is released you can bet win 2000 will be droped as well so why beat a dead horse unless you got nothing better to do.if eg. avg wants to make its antivirus program run on 9x its there right maybe their customers mean something to them the ones that have been with them since win 95.

i think any service pack is a bonus because at least 75%of issues are addressed.

come on with less sevices running win98se gotta be faster just goes without saying much like win 95 is faster .what it comes down too is applications .if u want to run programs that run on nt only then u must get a 3rd party version to run on 9x if u want less bloat you run older versions.

i see most people choose other i guess that means clone knockoffs etc (cheap generic pcs) the kind u buy from walmart.ived had dell compaq etc etc.and ived heard horror stories bout each so i guess its usually price that dictates purhase.

i got xp pro on a old P2-400 and it flys so i think its down to hd space or just what he prefers.never upgrade for peer pressure maybe a nlited xp might work or a minixp with functions.

i totally agree my wayward son when im cruising the hiways and biways of Internet98 i rarely pick up viruses usually spyware like coolsearch variant etc but its usually on a suspicous site and i took the risk but i can remove it with copylock etc. P.S not as many cars on Internet98 with everyone on the xp express lol.

in my travels on the freeware highway ived found 1000,s of excellent freeware programs for 9x far more then xp.For the newbies and those who still run win98se ,i thought it would be helpfull to list some.Got one list it here.Son Of Spy freeware

B) how long is this battle gonna continue?I too have been hit with spyware after xp pro updates using sp2 shortly after gonning online but to be fair i recieve similar spyware like cool search etc on 98se as well.what i will agree on is the sluggage scenario of xp.noted xp is nearly 8x the install size of 98se and factoring in the boot up time id give the egde to 98se but thats expected since theirs next to nothing loading on startup in 98se as opposed to xp.as far as response sure 98se is much quicker but the hal side of xp which let all appilication run seperately to avoid complete lockup is a small price to pay but its not foolproof ived had to reboot xp pro sp2 quite a few times.but comparing win98se speed to xp is like 95-98 when the oses is triple to 8x larger(xp)of course its gonna be slower on some instances much like vista which will be closer to 3gig will probably have xp users whine about its sluggageness aswell.in closing if appilication i use on a regular bases werent nt only nowadays id still run 98se in a heartbeat as my main pc os.P.S i do run 98se on 2 or my 3 pcs.

next link21 will tell us that making apps that run on a mac is slowing down nt development on xp apps.he just doesnt get it the companies make apps for the comsumers that buy their products if research or cumsumer input demands wants drivers for 9x mac os/2 etc then it will make.nobody suffers because of this in fact more benifit and then theirs 3rd party apps that fill a hole when others wont make drivers for certain oses.i often wonder why adobe doesnt support 9x anymore yet avg does?

i ran ie 7beta 1 for about a month i liked the tabbed browsing but i too have used mathon before and i found i was so use to ie 6 that it was a little confusing because my brain was trained to run ie from 4.0 right up .ill wait for the final in sp3 and watch beta 2 devlopement and see where the anti phising goes.

ive never claim that any os was superior but im glad u noted that lots of newbies etc might be on a older 98 box simply because their only occasional users surfers,email,older games,im pretty techy and i nlite make autorun cds etc.collect all the patches fixes etc for most oses but theres 2 camps of windows users.1=power user whos always up 2 date on top of all updates program versions etc. 2=joe user maybe a grandparent aunt someone who couldnt give a flyin flip about techinal mumbo jumbo inside a perticular os just want to send a smilie or a wink to a friend or hang in pogo games. so the ones in #1 camp will generally opt 4 latest os etc. and #2 those who just wanta surf. Gamerz now thats competely different animal lol.

rp4 offers limited unicode support nearly nothing usefull for 2000/xp apps sorry charlie.
