  1. Yeah.. but it's them who develop, and them who decide ... sad but true. Anyways i prefer using normal POP mailbox on normal outlook, and i won't have too much troubles
  2. Nope, i meant normal Outlook versions do not support HTTP protocol. I don't know if other mail clients would support HTTP protocol, though i doubt it. This seems all like a custom settings setup by Microsoft.
  3. I figured out what it is. Outlook Express includes in its Account properties the ability to deal with IMAP, POP, or HTTP servers. HTTP being not really a standard, but more like a workaround to enable Hotmail on desktops, it is not included in other products using standard technologies. I have no idea whether a "hack" of this is possible. Regards, ./. Max
  4. I think this is all about commercial strategy. I have no idea how to connect hotmail with a normal outlook version. I think that must be hardcoded. I will give it a try in a few mins to figure out.
  5. I don't know about this though i have my opinion. I think they will develop web-integrated services using their software MSN Explorer, and abandon Outlook Express further developments to promote their Office suit.
  6. Hello to MSFN members I'm happy to join the community, and I hope i can help and be helped in case of troubles. I enjoy very much these forums. I'm a system administrator for french government services in the Czech republic, and i'm dealing with various versions of Windows systems, so i've some kind of experience with these things. I'm 25, and well, that's pretty much it! Be well for now and cya around ./. MAX
  7. Hello, what is the code of the STOP error ? 0x.... thanks to precise. Did you made any change to config after applying the service pack ? What module is causing the STOP condition ? should be either something .SYS or another short message in CAPITAL letters. Thanks for feedback
  8. I'm running Corporate 8.0 on our network, it has very good features, though it's not too good on the server : it tends to 'forget' scanning the incoming mails (our box is also SMTP server). If you have a critical need for scanning incoming e-mails on a corporate network, then Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition is not the good choice. Else it is OK. If you configure it well, it will autodristribute virus def updates to clients, and you can set up systemwide behaviors.
  9. Thanks for these informations. For now it seems just like a lightly tuned-up windows xp with a vertical bar on the side, like it can be found on UNIX systems. I hope they're not going to release just a new skinned version of XP... I'd like finally that they start to make better user interfaces, something that would finally introduce 3D. I know that 3D interface is not *that* useful, and induces more CPU time consumption, but heh we're no more on windows 3.1 times
  10. Hello, I'm wondering what is exactly Longhorn .. The future of Windows XP ? What is going to "change our lives" ? Is there a possibility to test it ? Can you tell me more ?! Thanks
  11. stuff that lol i never saw an infrared cable LMFAO
  12. Sometimes i wonder if people go to school... no offense. *grins*
  13. It sounds like the good'ole UNIX shutdown ;-)
  14. Our whole network is DHCP/Windows 2000, and only notebooks are with XP. It's not bringing anything special to me, even now i'm running Win2K3 on my own server, though it's just a nifty version of Win2000. For your problem, maybe there is a mismatch setting in Power Management ?
  15. you wrote it like %systemroot% program files\commom files\Ahead\ audioplugins\ ? I suggest %systemroot%\program files\commom files\Ahead\ audioplugins\ [note the backslash between %systemroot% and program files
  16. I agree with Shaft's positions.
  17. Just want to state that I am french, work in the french government in diplomacy branch, and that I have my own convictions about our foreign politics. It is not because we have a different opinion about the way your "war of terror" should be conducted that we are the bad guys and you are the great guys ready to save the world. I think we have the right to exist and to express our own opinions. You helped us free our country twice, and we helped us become independent. So no need for useless bitching. I respect USA and its citizens but I will not tolerate offenses about my country or its politics. Terrorism exists everywhere on plusminus hidden or visible forms, and it's not a new phenomenon. It's just that because on relying too much on sophisticated technologies some governments have neglected the old reliable methods.
  18. I went through a *real* quick check of the registry and found nothing relating to this.
  19. quick launch works in both classic and skinned modes, why to access it with registry ? You just have to right click on the system bar, choose toolbars and then quick launch
  20. What ports is using this attack ? Is there a place where i can check about it ? [heads to symantec security] I think our firewall is locked well enough though. EDIT : I checked about it on Symantec website, and took extra preventive measures, though the servers were already patched and firewall in place. Thanks for the info.
  21. Would you be more specific on the kind of error message you get, if you get one ? Or is the screen just blanking and returning back to your desktop ?
  22. I don't know much about longhorn but far in 1995 when i was a teenager i had the occasion to use an ONYX station from Silicon Graphics and i remember that the file manager allowed zooming and other tricks. If the OS would be really running in 3D and offer more graphic customization would be fine.
  23. You can also give a try to Spybot Search and Destroy who is a free full version software, it will not only search and delete spywares, but it can check for tracers and check for corrupt registry entries.
  24. It can come from hardware. I'm as well what could be defined as an IT expert, and we purchased 6 months ago an HP Omnibook XE3. The input controls (keyboard, trackpad) were freezing, while the system kept running. We had to hibernate the system and restart it to get control again. This was a BIOS problem, who was fixed after 3 months. You can check on Compaq/HP forums, there should be other users with the same problem as you. Don't neglect bios/firmware updates, in case of notebooks it can be pretty useful. Regards, Max
