  1. I had to pull the plug on the download, as I'm almost out of bandwidth... my limit is 100GB on that specific site, and it's up to 98GB. v3.1 will probably be released onto Majorgeeks, so I can compensate for v3.5 or something next month.
  2. I managed to get the patch working without adding any of the registry entries that are normally added by the installer, into a ghost image of Win98SE. Now, it's a whole lot easier getting Win98SE systems up and running, with the mortified ghost image... erm, modified.
  3. I just did a bit of work on v3.1, and I have to report the following: I've gotten the ISO down to ~250MB. This is almost 100MB smaller, and it includes some new things, such as the current alpha release of the SP2 for First Editon, and the latest 10/13 release of 98SE2Me.
  4. What is WinGUI? Also, The reason why my package is bigger than yours... erm. Bigger than it should be - I included both the Options pack AND IE 6.0 SP1, as a separate install, not knowing that teh options pack will work on 98-Me. Hence, there's a 113MB folder that doesn't really need to be there. v3.1 will be out soon... I will not, however, be able to use my own bandwidth, as the original v3.0 seems to have used over 80GB of bandwidth this month (which is just over 200 or so, downloads). 3.1 will be a bit slimmer, but also add a few new items, and notices, such as the fact that the 98SE revolutions pack is no longer developed, and a few other things. 3.1 will be based on 3.0, but due to the way that I released the original file, no patch will be available.
  5. Right now, the CD is just a compilation - you choose from text labels what you want to install. I haven't provided any more information that that. The CD is directed towards members of this subforum, mostly. I'll probably try and have v3.01/3.1 out by next week. A flood in my basement has forced me out of my normal 'headquarters', and I'm now timesharing with two systems with family members... it's not fun in the least.
  6. The 9/30 version of 98SE2Me is included. Looks like between the fact that Maximus Decim released a patch, and this project has gone up a version, I'll have to update it to v3.01. Expect to see a new download within the week.
  7. I've had complaints with using SFX archives in the past... but, I usually use them anyway. Looks like I'll be re-releasing it as soon as 2-3 days from now, as a 7zip compressed SFX archive.
  8. It basically includes all the patches found on this forum, so I really should say that the patches included are only unofficial patches, created by members of a forum, not microsoft. Also, thank you MDGX! And the reason why I didn't 7zip the ISO, is because many people in the past have commented that using non-zip files isn't the best way for mass distribution of files... but, if I do end up having a bandwidth situation, I will probably compress the file using 7zip.
  9. I've released my Third Public Release of my compilation called Windows 98 PowerPack. For help and bug reports, please point yourself in this direction: http://www.msfn.org/ http://www.osbetaarchive.org/ http://www.mdgx.com/ What is it? It's a package filled with various windows 98 First and Second Edition Patches, modifications, and enhancements, to help the stability of a Windows 98-based system. What new features are in this release? * Autoplay menu that has a link to EVERYTHING, in CONCISE organized CATAGORIES! * More stuff. Lots of new patches for both Windows 98 Gold, Windows 98SE, and Windows Me. * Descriptions for EVERYTHING * Screenshots for Revolutions. **** This has been tested on my own system, as well as a P3-500 w/64MB RAM. The autoplay menu works fine, as well as the patches. **** What sort of Patches? Namely, the Unofficial Win98SE Service Pack v2.0.2, which installs most of the publicly-released hotfixes that microsoft has released since 98SE's release, as well as a bunch of patches that MS is reluctant to release. Only fully tested patches are included, so no worries for people who only want STABLE operation of Windows. Another patch allows for full support of USB Mass-Storage devices, by implanting the usb sub-system from Windows Me into Windows 98. A few other patches were designed with the programmer and database users in mind, which update certain components that Microsoft has not officially created updates for, including the MDAC components, and all XML libraries. What sort of modifications? If you're still using Windows 98SE, but running it on a semi-decent system, and you've grown tired of the 9x UI, there's a modification out there for you. It's called Tihy's 98SE Revolutions Pack. What does it do? It modifies Explorer, as well as almost all the icons on the system, to look and feel like Windows XP with no skins. (Actually, v3.6 has skinning support, but is considered beta-quality). Version 3.0, 3.6, & 4.0 rc2 are provided. v3.0 is more stable than 3.6, but doesn't have as many features. v4.0 rc2 is provided for people willing to risk it all, as it has a lot of bugs and stability issues. Screenshots of 98SE Revolutions: What sort of enhancements are included? WARNING: This patch is EXTREMELY EXPERIMENTAL. PLEASE BACKUP ALL DATA BEFORE ATTEMPTING! If you have a valid copy and license of Windows Me laying around, but are using Windows 98SE, you can now implant some features of Windows Me into Windows 98SE. How, you say? Why, 98SE2ME, of course! 98SE2ME was written and researched by MDGX(http://www.mdgx.com, also previously known as AXCEL216), who has maintained windows tweaks and modifications on the web for the past 9 years. Instructions are included. All these patches are HIGHLY EXPERIMENTAL!!! Why did I make this? Mostly to fill in the public on how you can make Windows98SE a viable alternative to NT-based operating systems, while still maintaining the same stability and application-compatibility. The future of modding Windows 98SE looks rather good, with people currently attempting to create Unicode Libraries for XP-compatibility in programs. The Readme file included has links to all forums and threads that made this pack possible. Download Link: Link put back up:http://www.jimmsta.com/downloads/98PP/98PPv3.iso Enjoy! When will v3.1/3.5 be released????!??!? I'm working on it, slowly but surely. I'm maintaining a larger project called BHT, which is what has taken all my time away from this side project. BHT? What's that?? Check out the entry on majorgeeks.com: http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4855 P.S: Just remember: Backup your system before you install any of these pathces. They're not entirely designed by Microsoft, so they're not certified in any way. (Aside from the majority of the patches included in the Unofficial Service Pack). I've made this for the users of this forum, and OSBetaArchives. I REALIZE that there is some tension with me releasing this elsewhere, and these patches in the wrong hands can have adverse effects (hence all the warnings). I'm just compiling all the most-used, if not all the patches on this forum, into one convienient package. Next version info: Windows 9x Power Pack v4.0 will include the following features: Full compatibility with Win98 FE/SE/Me, with various patches, programs, and other unique tools (all found in this forum). New AutoPlay program (smaller size window, more intuitive navigation) Smaller download. Separate Language releases.
  10. What's the status of this service pack? I remember there being a download link, but I cannot find it anymore. I was looking forward to installing 98FE and using this pack... especially to get my Channels back!
  11. The main thing that Dell adds to their XP home SP2 cd's is the following file, compressed into a cab (xml "Package Description.xml" file) <?xml version="1.0" ?> - <HELPCENTERPACKAGE> <VERSION VALUE="0.0.0.0" /> <PRODUCT ID="Dell Inc." /> <SKU VALUE="ALL" /> <LANGUAGE VALUE="ALL" /> - <NODEOWNERS> <OWNER DN="CN=Dell Inc.,L=Round Rock,S=Texas,C=US" /> </NODEOWNERS> </HELPCENTERPACKAGE> I guess it's a way to brand the Help & Support part of XP as being a part of Dell... or something. Then there's another file with the actual Help and support files, as well as some sort of Driver package descriptor file... random things to ensure that the end user is getting their Dell PC back to Dell PC standards.
  12. ah, sorry. I'm an id***. here's the link: http://www.jimmsta.com/downloads/bfu/SymRemove.exe
  13. well, what version of Norton was she using? 2001/2002/2003/2004/2005? Knowing this, I could help out a bit as well... Symantec has a nice utility for users of 2003/2004/2005, called "SymNRT". It'll remove every instance of the **** program, even if the files for it are missing. It's a bit better than the Regedit/F3 combination. Also, I have a script that I wrote to automate the removal of anything else that the symantec app doesn't remove. Try this: You have to run the EXE that I'm providing you with, which is a self-extracting archive. Then run the program "BFU". Next, open up a file called "rmSymantec.bfu". Click Go. The system might need to be rebooted. I should note that this is a VERY DESTRUCTIVE script, and should ONLY BE USED IF ALL OF SYMANTEC PRODUCTS ARE AFFECTED!!!
  14. Lol... my testbed machine for Win98SE mods, and such, is an XPS T450 w/500MHz P3, which I took from a broken down Dimension L500. I bumped it up to 320MB RAM, and 2 SCSI hard drives, as well as 2 IDE hard drives, and a DVD-ROM drive... current specs: Pentium 3 500MHz 320MB RAM 2x 8GB IBM SCSI-1 hard drives 1x 6GB Maxtor HDD 1x 8GB DeathStar (IBM HDD) 1x LTD-122 Liteon DVD-ROM drive Windows 98SE Windows 2000 nlited Windows XP Home Windows XP runs smoothly on it, as well as Windows 98SE, Me, and 2000... Although, I don't have any AV or Spyware Protection, as the machine hasn't had contact with the internet yet... but I got it a nice PCI 54g wireless card a few weeks ago, and I'm in need of reformatting it, so... yeah. Edit: and yes, I'm a tech, work in a local computer shop. I was out sick today... awful cold/fever/general awfulness.
  15. I have to say that I'm looking forward to a USB-thumbdrive version of Windows XP, that isn't based on the Embedded XP's... This project is inspiration for all of us that have tried things like this ourselves, and failed....
  16. I believe its a part of the MFT that has all the files on a volume's names in uppercase... for compatibility, or something.
  17. I work in a computer shop, and I've noticed that most DELL XP Home cd's are now coming pre-activated. I believe that DELL is using a VLK license on these copies of windows, and the DELL XP CDkeys on the side of the machine are created by using the hash of the original VLK cdkey. DELL probably has several million, if not billion cdkeys based off of their VLK license with Microsoft.
  18. I believe the problem with these utilities is that you cannot run them alongside Windows, as windows has its own memory manager, EMM, which does sorta the same thing. Also, if you're using an application big enough that you need more memory available to dos, why not use windows? At least that way, you can allocate more than the standard 640k ram to a process. (windows 95/98/Me, NOT XP).
  19. Question: Will you be using minlogon with this project, or not? If yes, Will fast-user switching be available? At the moment, I'm sharing my machine, and would love to test this project out when it's done, but I'll have to be able to share the machine no-matter-what for a while... then again, there's always VMWare... Also, is there any need for more help? I've been known to sort out efficiancy problems with windows... and succeed...
  20. Essentially, you can integrate Gape's SP2 into a Win98SE cd. Just dump the CAB file "SP2.CAB" into the Win98 directory, then go ahead and install Win98SE. It'll automatically find the SP2 file, and copy all files in there to the install.... it's documented in v2.0.2's post. If you wanted to re-write the setup.exe file, you wouldn't be doing much... setup.exe is basically just a dummy launcher - it detects when DOS is in use, and runs a separate DOS installer binary (DOSSETUP.BIN)... the .BIN files are the installers for Windows 9x. Check them out, if you wish, but there's never going to be a new installer for a 7-year old Operating System, of which, we do not have the source to. Don't give too many people false hopes. T'is a dream. (sorry).
  21. Is this project what you're talking about? http://www.stacken.kth.se/projekt/arla/ According to their project documentation, they ported XFS/AFS to WinNT/2000.... although, the site doesn't seem to have any note of this... Also, http://www.fs-driver.org/download.html -- EXT2 installable windows driver -- might be something worthwhile, as it was programmed using the Windows Installable Filesystem Driver SDK... And here's a ReiserFS reader for Win32: http://yareg.akucom.de/ And a 'native' ReiserFS driver: http://rfsd.sourceforge.net/
  22. Looks really interesting/promising... just wish I could use WinPE the way BartPE has helped me in the past....
  23. ah, ok. As always, I'm thinking DOS/Windows-platform specific apps... I'm truly doubtful that mitchellovision knows what he's talking about in this case... (or from what I've read, any case). However, I did dig up some documentation on how to ADD REALDOS back into WinXP... in a sense. It involves a debug command to be run on the BOOTSECT.DOS file, and a bit of file copying to and from floppy... Link: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=53599
  24. What became of Neptune is WinMe. Many pieces of Neptune were backported into Win9x, which is really what WinMe is... a backported piece of crap. Another year of production wouldn't have made any difference - had Microsoft continued production on Neptune, we wouldn't be having this conversation right now... and what program does work with? DEBUG? I'd really like to know, as there isn't any app that I know of called 'tr' ...
  25. I like the blue one - it's very soft on the eyes, and its very unique. Many thanks for creating my now-default VS!
