  1. Honestly, I've been using batch files for a long time... I learned computers on DOS 3.3 & 5.0, at a young age - but I'm trying to get away from batch files as well. In my "BHT" utility cd, I chose to use a batch-file based update utility. I offer the user NO options. It's pitiful. I'm trying to get away, but cannot, as the next patch for that is ENTIRELY made up of batch files that download the parts of the patch... I'm not even too sure as to whether I'm missing the mark on this project. You want to automate the patching process with Autopatcher, correct? In any case, I've got a fresh install of Win98SE in VMWare, and will begin module creation after installing ERUNT and a few other registry tools.
  2. Well, I'll create the Unofficial Patches modules. I think releasing the Win9x Power Pack as a Module in this project would be great. I'm happy to do the research needed for such things.
  3. Very cool tool. This is very helpful for those of us that don't have the bandwidth available to get Autopatcher, and only want SOME updates, not all. Hope development continues. Looks great, and is very easy to use. edit: 200th post!
  4. Does Autopatcher's exe work in Win9x? I've never checked it out... if it does, I'd be willing to create modules for this project, as I've already started... The Win9x Power Pack was going to initially be an Autopatcher-like installer, but in the end, I just wanted to get it released as quickly as possible. I realize that it would probably benefit me and everyone else to have it set up as easily as Autopatcher's interface. I assume that this project would superceed the Power Pack, as it can have full registry-checking, and various other enhanced features. In other words, I'm ALL FOR THIS. So, when do we start? Also: Might want to re-read that.
  5. There's some truth to that statement. The silicon's electrical properties change over time, and as it seems, can become bad over time. This is why good ram can go bad. Age really cannot be used as a form of memory lifetime, as a system from 1998 could have been used for 3-4 hours a day, and have memory failure within a year, or a system from 1998, being used for 20-24 hours a day, for 8 years, with no failures. You can buy the cheapest RAM and get away with no problems, or you can purchase the most expensive RAM, and have it arrive DOA. Electricity on silicon is a funny thing.
  6. I used nLite to slipstream a MCE DVD from a DELL system... Media Center WOULD NOT WORK until after I re-installed .NET v1.0, v1.1 SP1, and v2.0, followed by the Rollup 2 package. After installing the Rollup 2 package, all was fine. I was very worried there for a second.
  7. Personally, Portable Firefox is best IMHO for Win9x systems. Get it here: http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable edit: more direct link. Site states that it's compatible with Win 95 through Vista.
  8. Just a question - while waiting for a virus scan to finish on an old hard drive, I dove into the "old backup" folder, to find a Windows 95 GOLD installation... upon which, I went to the system folder, and looked at a few files under a hex editor... (I'm at work, and bought said hex editor for advanced data recovery purposes). What I found intriguing was NTKERN.VxD, which seems to have imports/exports for the NT Kernel. Is this in anyway associated with Kernel32.dll, or is it just a compatibility layer for some executables? I've always wondered what the Virtual Device Drivers were for, (I do know that the VMM files are part of Win9x's HAL, or Windowing server). My questions: Has anyone ever tried hacking away at these files? Is there any reason to attempt to do so? What is NTKERN.VXD?
  9. I made a better build, this time with the correct version information, icon, etc: http://rapidshare.de/files/29214017/dx9cAug06.exe (27MB, 7zip-wrapped sfx installer/archive). This is designed for Windows 9x Systems ONLY. Do not attempt to use it to update WinNT-based OSes. It only contains updates that have win98+ support. For August, there's only been a single cab file updated. I'll be looking into making an unofficial dx9c version, to see if any of the XACT files work with 98SE or higher.
  10. I repacked the August 2006 version of dx9 for this purpose. Now, it's just a wrapped 7zip archive (Just like my June 2006 version). The DXSetup.exe files works as intended on all versions of 9x. If you'd like me to post it, I'll be happy to.
  11. Done. Edit: Just a heads up, there will be a small patch soon. At the moment, it's about 10mb uncompressed, and includes the 48-bit LBA patches, as well as a few other goodies.
  12. I tested Portable Firefox Bon Echo on a Win98SE box at work. Works perfectly.
  13. Thanks - this'll take strain off my server. I'm surprised that it isn't
  14. This is also my opinion... Heck, I find that KDE has too much eyecandy - it seems the latest version that's integrated into Kubuntu, has a vista-inspired theme by default - it's too much graphics for me.
  15. /derail Ah, ok- I thought so. It's just not every day that you see that many topics replied to, from a while back, all at around the same time, thus making the 'Last post' column a blur with a single user name.
  16. Perhaps something happened to your C:\Windows\Command directory? I can't remember if it's 98SE or WinMe that has EBD.cab... check for that stuff first...
  17. You do realize that you won't be able to initialize more than 999,999 KB of that, right? Win9x's kernel cannot handle 1GB of RAM (1,048,576 KB). So, if you have 1.5GB of RAM, you'll only be able to use just shy of 1GB of it. Save yourself some money, grab a copy of SE or XP Home Upgrade - if your system is able to handle 1GB of RAM, you should probably upgrade... or upgrade to 98SE.
  18. Do we really need two threads for this? Go here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=67610
  19. If you strip out presets, skins, and codecs, I'm sure you could get WMP9 down a ways, but you'll end up losing vital functionality, in most cases.
  20. I scanned all patches with the latest version of NOD32, as well as Avast and Symantec Antivirus. There could be something to Tihiy's batch script that looks like a virus. I've recently seen one of the strangest detections concerning a tar file created with 7zip - all the files in the tar were scanned, no viruses or trojans found, but once put into a tar file, it was detected as a type of trojan. Very strange stuff. I've scanned all releases on multiple computers, to ensure that my machine has not been compromised. I'm very paranoid when it comes to viruses/spyware, so you can be sure that I've scanned everything extensivley.
  21. Ah, right. I'm an id***. Here's what's new with v4.1: Latest Unofficial Service Pack for win98 FE Latest Unofficial Service Pack for WinMe Better Looking Autorun Updated Revolutions Pack Updated NUSB drivers for Win98SE Added a small codec pack I think that's it...
  22. Alrighty... version 4.1 is out, and mirrored. See first post for more details, md5, and whatever else...
  23. For a quick solution, wouldn't something like this work? dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/null > p7zip image.7z DD will do a bit for bit copy of the original drive, and p7zip will compress it to a 7zip file... I KNOW something like this would work. You'd still need some way to resize the resulting partition, as the image would take up the same size as the original disk... but all the same, this is a simple solution to your question. (Albeit not so graceful, and definitley against what LLXX is talking about).
  24. Just a heads-up: An update is on the way. If anyone wants me to re-release the full package, I will (Already done, awaiting need to deploy it). I'll release the update tommorow afternoon/evening. It is done. It is a 70MB 7Zip SFX archive, which should be extracted into your W9xPP Directory. A Full Re-Release will be 210MB. It is all ready to be uploaded... I'll attempt to make it possible for future releases to be dynamically updated through something NSIS-based or something.
