OK... Don't remove Active Directory if you ever plan to connect to a Domain (roughly, a network where one (or several) computer is the server and bosses around the others). Usually found at your office. If removed, may also hurt VPN. MSMail and Mapi removed may hurt Outlook Express and Outlook (obviously), but also Send To Desktop functionality, Save as Web Page (complete) in Internet Explorer (and you won't be able to open those .mht files) and maybe something else. I'd say, dont remove. IP conferencing is used by NetMeeting (the windows component) and maybe other (simple) messengers. Full blown messengers use their own protocols and would not be hurt by it. (except maybe MSN Messenger, but I doubt it). MAC bridge - used if you ever wish to use two network (or internet) connections as one (doubles the speed). If you're sure you won't ever need it, remove it. VML is used by IE, but rarely. I remove it for years, and never seen a problem (but I use other browsers more). I'm not sure if it's the same thing as SVG, but that's also used rarely in the real world. The only problem with it would be if some program specifically looks for it (and I don't know any). TCP/IP V6 - not necessarily best to keep if you don't plan to use this build for many years - It's a standard that hasn't took off on the Internet yet, and Vista uses it - if you need to network with it - but *I think* it will fall back to V4 if necessarry. Connection wizards - remove if you know how to set up a connection (New connection menu item in Network Connections folder is not removed). Maybe needed for some sorts of dialup or VPN connections, but I haven't used those, so I wouldn't know. Outlook express - same as Msmail and Mapi. GL

I love nLite, I hate Windows because it plays dirty with intermingled components. GL

Where comes "applying personal settings" from?
GrofLuigi replied to BAReFOOt's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Actually, I don't know anything about unattended. I just know this from 'live' install where it's already applied, but I don't want to revert all the time. Sorry if I can't help you more. That was just a pointer... Good Luck GL -
Well Said! Oh so they are now returning to using the keyboard and that's a good thing? After remotes and media centers/HTPCs took some ground? GL Well Said! Ah, I didn't see this at first. So the CPU power/RAM/HDDs should be used for searching/indexing documents, MP3s, videos instead of playing/editing them? GL

Fixed after this. GL

One word (or two as they are connected): StubPath . Find a way to get rid of it. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/238441 http://www.msfn.org/board/What-are-the-stu...eys-t10412.html GL -
It is actually a good thing IMO, shows how old this board is. I often read old topics and enjoy.GL

I use it on every OS I can. Very good, lightweight, with basic image processing. GL

Usually around 90-100 MB. Less (40-60 MB) on a virtual machine. This is on idle, no other program loaded. GL

I use QEMU for several years (x32 on x32) and haven't seen any big (unsolvable) problem. In fact, I like it so much that I didn't even try another virtual machine. Maybe you should try the kqemu accelerator module (IF it works for x64)? GL

Nothing unusual, except for drivers - you seem to load a lot of stuff from "driver backup". I'm not familiar with this, but I'm guessing it's a driver backup utility that *probably* picked up some stuff from the system where it was running - I see entries like ks.inf , machine.inf , netrasa.inf etc. which are part of the normal windows drivers and SP3 for example should have updated versions of these (or even possibly SP2). My suggestion? Get rid of all of them and find drivers for your hardware ONLY (Intel, Crystal Audio) direct from the manufacturer and UNPACK THEM so that .inf-s are visible and picked up by nLite. Also you have many addons (i don't use any, except for DirectX), so I couldn't comment on them, but they could also be causing conflict if they are old versions/somehow incompatible. I'll leave to others to review them. And BTW, toside is Toshiba IDE Controller. Do you have that piece of hardware at all? GL

Just be aware that it blocks whole domains, not individual URLs. GL

Install your FONTS safely and Quietly !
GrofLuigi replied to astro_2010's topic in Application Installs
You need something more to register/enumerate fonts to be ready to use. *Maybe* something like: explore "%WINDIR%\Fonts close explorer. GL -
Another proof that Vi$ta is inferior (or someone else would say sucks). GL

I always disable that automatically (in fact after a fresh install I search for "friendly" in the registry and disable everything - what's friendly for Microsoft isn't friendly for me), but after this post I stopped a second to think about this and searched to find out what this really is. So here is an explanation of this 'feature' in case anyone wonders what it is. GL

Gr8. With my next installation I will take it to the end - P, W and U. I already use T as Temp - that's leftover from my Amiga days. And of course, my user name is always one letter long. GL
-
Yeah, that too. GL

I myself use "users" "program files" and "windows", but I like the shorter names. The idea is if you replace them with shorter names, it reduces the size of registry/ini files (saving of few bytes multiplied many times). It's not about saving storage space (that's insignificant). However, I haven't gotten around lately to make new installation. I wouldn't change 'windows' not because programs 'expect' it but because the difference is too small. Just my opinion. GL

Here are some of the most helpful links that Google spit out for "customize places bar": http://www.timeatlas.com/mos/5_Minute_Tips...ows_and_Office/ http://windowsxp.mvps.org/PlacesBar.htm http://lifehacker.com/photogallery/tweakui/2831580 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826214 GL

I treat the default 'documents and settings' structure as dispensable - it could be deleted (unintentionally) any time and I won't miss it. Whoever wants to put things there, it's fine with me, but I won't. Lately I don't even bother with redirecting it - just customize the Places bar of the file open/save dialog to suit my needs (and of course create/copy the folder structure elsewhere). GL

unattended "turning 2003 to desktop" ?
GrofLuigi replied to Sesshoumaru's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Yeah, resurrecting old thread and all that... But: What are the possible values for "Acceleration" and/or "Acceleration.level" ? Let's say on a Server 2003 SP2 (but also on other OSs). Searching for "acceleration" in HKLM gives many different values present (0Xffffffff, 0X0, 0X4, 0Xf) at different places. Note that sound control panel, display control panel and dxdiag have been run and hardware acceleration bumped up to the max in every place possible in the gui. Search gives many different opinions (mostly copy/paste). GL -
That's not a fair comparison...GL

You obviously don't have prefetch enabled. Just kidding, welcome to the forum! Prefetch is when Windows tries to guess what you will do next and preloads that program (in reality, many programs). Works best if you have lots of ram and your usage habbits don't change often. IMHO, useless, but others disagree. GL
