I experienced it too, for several days. It is fixed now. GL

"Go to first unread" doesn't work (goes to top of the page). Opera browser. I see other people reported it, so I was not dreaming. It's fixed now. GL

Maybe people were scared off by the mess (too much work). Anyway, I looked and I can't see anything obvious that could cause your two issues. Most probably it's the Dell CD. Less likely - the theme; and much less likely - IE7 integration (except if there is a known quirk about IE7 - I don't know much about that). Also, I hope you have read the many reports of errors encountered when running nLite more than once on the same source. It might work, but often it doesn't. GL

"Go to first unread" doesn't work (goes to top of the page). Opera browser. Kind of deja vu... GL Edit: I found it.

I am sorry to dig up an old thread, and very very sorry to quote myself, but couldn't help it when I saw this from about the most credible source there is... How should I put it... ahem... I told you so... I just pray for Vista/7 users that there are no bugs in Fileinfo.sys GL

(Bug) DHCP dependency not removed when removing NetBT
GrofLuigi replied to neurolysis's topic in nLite
Welcome to the forum. Very nice of you to report the issue, but it was reported before (also in other threads) and the author (Nuhi) is aware of it. It's just that currently he's taking a break from development. Also, if my memory doesn't fail me, this was brought up a long time ago, during active development, and maybe he decided to leave it that way. GL -
[SOLVED] how do I get the right graphics driver to install? XP x64

My pleasure. Yeah, you found the simplest solution. GL -
[SOLVED] how do I get the right graphics driver to install? XP x64
GrofLuigi replied to NightOwl's topic in Windows XP
First of all, it seems to me that indeed you should concentrate on the Radeon. As per your log from Intel Identifation Utility, the chipset supports integrated graphic, but does it mean it's installed? Have the chip(s) been put on the motherbard? I doubt they would put two graphic cards (unless it's a very high-end laptop). Are two different devices shown in Vista? Note, on my Intel Mobile 4 integrated GFX there are two devices with the same name (Intel Series 4...), I'm not talking about that. You will be sure if you see the properties of the display adapter (even if it still says Unknown or Standard VGA) in Device Manager, select the Details tab and copy the Hardware Ids. But as the log already said, that's pci\ven_1002&dev_9480 = Radeon. Or use some hardware identification utility like Everest. From what I searched, this is a case of manufacturer's limited support for XP64. On HP's site, there is a Radeon driver for Vista x64, while they offer only Intel's for XP32. They don't have anything for XP64 at all. Maybe you could extract the information from the Vista64 driver listed on their site: ATI Radeon Graphics Driver 03-2009 8.563.1.3000 B and try to locate the equivalent from ATI (I doubt the exact driver will work on XP64, but you could try). Also, graphic cards manifacturers often leave the support for OEM drivers to the manufacturers, i.e. their "Unified" drivers (in this case Catalyst) don't support OEM cards like yours. I am not 100% sure if this applies to your laptop, but if it does, and having in mind the above issue (HP's non-support for XP64) you might be out of luck. In the old times we would just edit the infs, but with x64 Windows' driver signature enforcement, I don't know if that's still possible (it might be, I haven't encountered the need to). One of the last hopes would be to try alternative drivers (like Omega) and their forums. About the SATA AHCI controller, I think it's just different strings in the infs - not significant. Even if it were, that's a separate device. GL -
[SOLVED] how do I get the right graphics driver to install? XP x64

Hi, I didn't analyze your logs in detail, but please note that there are two several generations of mobile Intel Graphic chipsets/drivers and they are not interoperable (meaning you can't use the driver from one on another). Some of them have similar names and I've made the mistake of mixing/matching them before. I think this is yours Another candidate This is the least likely one IMO *edit: I couldn't find the correct driver on Intel's site. I'll search some more. Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset, right? *edit2: Yep, it's the first one. Sorry for the confusion. *edit3: Are you sure it's not an ATI Radeon? That's what pci\ven_1002&dev_9480 (in your log) says!!! GL -
With so little details about the file, I can think only of generic solutions: - try from command line (with short names if applicable, to see them use dir /x) - try chkdsk - try on another computer - try shutting antivirus down, if any etc. GL

A reg tweak for shutting off WFP, with no DLL hacking
GrofLuigi replied to fdv's topic in Windows Tips 'n' Tweaks
Hi fdv, I appreciate your work very much. I saw this when you posted it, and I have some comments about it: 1. I would be uncomfortable to have nonexisting path in the registry because I use many registry cleaners. And even without them, somehow it doesn't seem quite "right"... Would it be possible to modify it to something like @SYS:DoesNotExist (as seen in that autorun disabling registry hack)? 2. I haven't tried it yet (because nLite did a great job on SFC here), but does it shut down SFC completely? For example, if you delete sfcfiles.dll (and/or similar files) there is an event log entry on every boot saying "SFC is not active on this system". That would be the perfect solution if sfc.dll (or sfcfiles.dll, I don't remember any more) wasn't referenced in other core system dlls and needed for many things. I'm talking about live systems above. About the second part (*), I've seen that also in some of (your?) posts before, and I'm very enthusiastic about its potential application. So some questions about that (as I understand, that's replacing ,_x, with ,, to disable filesize matching requirement): 3. To which files (.inf's) does it apply? Only layout.inf? (OK I'm slow ) 4. Does it apply during first-time setup only or every time a device (inf) is installed? 5. Can it be done on a live system (edit inside %windir%\inf)? 6. Is it independent from SFC? 7. As I mostly use nLite, can a finished nLite folder be pre/postprocessed? 8. In which OSes does it work? So many questions... And as you can see, I'm not very skilled in this .inf editing... Thanks. Not if you use EFS or BitLocker. It's no help at all then. Yep, only game over for Win9x. Oh wait, you didn't even need to pop in a CD for that. I hope you're sure that Bitlocker won't lock you out just as easily as me. Actually, I expect you to be sure, but I would never use such a thing myself. (Not really an argument, I know. ) I really don't want to repeat all over again the terms like "out of the box" and "average user", but if you insist, we can create a poll on how many ppl use Bitlocker/EFS in real life. Reverse here, but I hope there is a way to restart Vista/Win7 with a keyboard. And (most) bios passwords can be reset by pulling the battery out. There were also some lists circulating of the built-in passwords. Anyway, that hypothetical PC is becoming more of a locked down machine than an average one, so I think the OS doesn't matter any more. Hell, you could zip your files with a really long password and be done with it. What I wanted to say, the constant escalation in this thread doesn't lead to anything constructive and nobody is gonna change his mind, so what's the point? I think most of the users of this board with more than 10 posts have good knowledge of pros and cons of both (generations of) operating systems, so there's no education either. GL

If escape is allowed, then using the keyboard is. If CTRL-ALT-DEL is allowed, maybe someone could press it twice (reboot needed). Now only if a way was found to pop a CD in, game over. GL

In Reader: Ctrl-D (document properties) -> Fonts tab <- here you'll see fonts embedded in the document. (Might be different for 8, I have Acrobat (Adobe) Reader 7. But I don't think so.) To reproduce the document in Word: First, try (select the part that you want), copy, paste in Word. If it's a proper document (and additionally, if not protected), it'll work. If that doesn't work, try full Acrobat. Sometimes even that doesn't work, you'll have to OCR (with Abbyy, for example). GL

XP Home? Nothing to do with nLite. Except if... How did nLite create "F1reFly" user? (Is it administrator?) Check in your LAST_SESSION_U.INI (Don't post it here!). I haven't checked, but common sense would say that restricted user cannot create admin user (escalation of privilege). To cut the long story short, reboot in safe mode and login as the Administrator. GL *Edit: I still don't know if any other administrator can log in to XP home in non-Safe Mode.

Yeah, exhaust is planned. Right now it's a big household fan, but I'm still reluctant to put it on the window to blow outwards (it would look soo stupid, wouldn't it? ) But never mind the implementation, my question was about leaving computer fans powered 24/7 without any resistor (or control circuit). GL

ripken204: Let's say I start with one. Wouldn't it be overkill for a PSU to power just one small load (not as in efficiency, but as in - insufficient voltage drop and the voltage stays high all the time? Not to mention the wire trick for jumpstarting it.) On the other hand, I have melted some small power adapters by connecting a flashlight bulb to them (too hungry consumer, I know...) gUiTaR_mIkE: how much airflow - not much, just to get it started. No air is moving in this heat here. on USB hubs: for example, this won't start if connected to a hub that is only powered on and disconnected from a computer. Anyway, the hub's adapter is way too small - I have larger ones. I plan to move this fan (OK, it's one for starters) around as needed - over the TV, monitor (both CRT), amplifier... they are all very hot to the touch. Later maybe each gets its own fan and another (bigger) one pulls towards the window. (The computers are fine, but the fan could aid the laptop too). GL

I want to place some fans on strategic locations around my equipment - not directly connected to anything, just floating around (and planning to expand this with vent pipes). I couldn't find any small fans (independently powered, as in room fans) to buy that would suit me. I have many spare computer fans (from PSUs or bought as spare) that would be perfect, but I am not sure how to power them for 24/7 operation. Incidently, I don't have any spare computer PSUs currently (I can find some) but I have a bunch of (very) small power adapters for small devices. Either with them, or with a computer PSU, the main question is: Is it safe to leave them on all the time just connected to 12 V or a resistor/something is needed? I don't want to start a fire when I'm not at home. Thank you for any insights. GL
