best/fastest hardware platform that supports 98SE
Petr replied to krick's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Intel has Windows 98 SE support for 915x Express chipsets but not 100%. Fiodor in his post shows screenshot of PCI-E Nvidia GeForce 6600 in Intel 955X motherboard. I only found that PCI-E GeForce 6200 TurboCache does now work with Windows 98 SE. You can have partition size above 137GB but Windows ScanDisk and Defrag will not work. You can use either DOS ScanDisk that apparently does not have this limit or Norton SystemWorks or any other 3rd party software. Petr -
But please consider much lower quality of displayed text, here is the example: http://www.ryston.com/x/foxit/ (comments are in Czech but you will sure understand) Especially the text in parenthesis in the middle of the paragraph is almost unreadable in Foxit Reader. Petr

I have file version 3.0.3.0, date 17-Jul-2005, 524288 bytes, but the first line of the generated report shows 3.02. Petr

try using IE 5.5 SP2 eidenk. also avoid using both an IE and a non-IE browser to view MSFN.org forum sites. I did something like that (use IE6 SP1 and Opera 8.51) and either browser cant remember my login user name. stick to using either IE or Opera. OT: I never used any other browser than Mozilla Suite 1.7, Mozilla Seamonkey 1.0a, Mozilla Seamonkey 1.5a for viewing MSFN forum and I naver had any problem. All browsers can remember my login. Petr

I have installed Windows 2000 Professional two years ago to my father's computer - and it's hell. Although it is 1.7GHz P4 Compaq SFF computer, the boot takes more than one minute, and just dialer removal already took many hours - nor Spybot S&D, nor other anti-spyware tools were able to remove those trojans that use advantages of NT based OS for hiding themseves and virtual immortality. I never had so many problems with W98 as with W2000. This is my personal experience, other people may have another. Petr

I surf the net several hours a day, at home on Windows 98 SE, at work on Windows XP Professional, I use Mozilla Seamonkey 1.5a browser, and the only difference I see is that my home 1GHz PIII computer is much quicker are more responsive than my 2.7GHz P4 computer at work. I haven't seen blue screen for years. Never got any spyware/virus/dialer. For years I was using PC with AMD K6-2/400 CPU and the speed and stability was sufficient too. One thing that I really appreciate on Windows XP is the Remote Desktop. It's better than PC Anywhere, Rapid Remote and other remote software I was using before. From my point of view, the only reason why to upgrade from W98SE to WXP can be the missing support for the new software and/or new hardware. Unfortunately new operating systems and new software is very ineffective in using hardware resources. I remeber days when I was editing 200 page manual in Wordstar on CP/M machine with 2 MHz processor and 48 KB of RAM. And later 500 page manual in Ventura Publisher 2.0 on MS-DOS based machine with 16 MHz 80386 and 4 MB of RAM - and indexing was quicker than now in Word or similar applications on box with 200 time quicker processor. So again - it depends on the use. For Internet browsing, text editing, mail reading/writing is Windows 98 SE sufficient and give better user experience on the same hardware. Petr

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
Petr replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
I don't suppose to ask MS for this patch, MS has sent to me too many patches already. I also don't suppose that it could contain anything usuful (if exists at all). mesp202en-a3 contains msasn1.dll version 5.00.2195.6905 white KB828028 (W98) contains 5.00.2195.6824 and KB828028 (W2K) 5.00.2195.6823. Petr replied to MDGx's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Yes, there is HKLM,%UpdateKey%\%SPKey%\%LocaleID%%UpdID%,%10%\t2embed.dll,,"5.0.2195.7073"instead of HKLM,%UpdateKey%\%SPKey%\%LocaleID%%UpdID%,%11%\t2embed.dll,,"5.0.2195.7073" in the KB908519.INF file. T2embed.dll file resides in SYSTEM disrectory. Petr -
sesp21a-en.exe does not contain KB891711 fix from Microsoft but unofficial fix. Therefore KB891711.EXE was updated to use fixed GlobalMemory instead of movable GlobalMemory. This appears to improve things. Unofficial KB891711 fix - newer version Kb891711.exe 4.10.2224 MD5: a47a1095cb568a93437228fc7adace91 SFV32: 4C843312 Q891711.dll 4.10.2223 MD5: f744fde2011add7978a840f73fa8348b SFV32: 86BC013D (Kb891711.exe has the same version number but different content) sesp21 contains uninstall option for KB891711 fix in Add/Remove programs. Please do not use 17 months old USP that may contain bugs. Explorer.exe in USP has modified icons and therefore the size and MD5SUM may differ. Petr In what thread? AFAIK there are no kernel32.dll patches. shell32.dll has icons changed. explorer.exe has icons changed and Dr.Hoiby's patch http://www.dr-hoiby.com/TrayIconIn256Color/ cannot cause any instability - it is just one bit changed. Here you can see what was modified: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?s=&sho...ndpost&p=432615 I you want to use unpatched files but the latest version, then shell32.dll comes from Q313829 package http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/down...829/default.asp and explorer.exe comes from IE6SP1 or IE4.01SP2 (same version, a bit newer file). Petr replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Hi MDGx, could you ask the author of the patch to patch also the files for Windows 98 Gold, i.e. version 4.10.2002? They are contained in this fix: http://www.winpack.org/petr/98/289635USA8.EXE Petr -
[Question] - Is there any toolbar for MS-DOS Prompt for Windows XP?
Petr replied to Petr's topic in Windows XP
It seem it is not. If I open command line window by running CMD, then yes, there will be these options in right click menu. But cmd.exe is 32-bit application, it is not MS-DOS prompt. Simple 16-bit MS-DOS prompt can be opened just by running COMMAND. And there is no right-click menu. I need it for copying from/to 16-bit applications. Petr -

At first, the current and most stable version of the Unofficial Service Pack for Windows 98 SE is 2.1a, http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=61749 - 1.5 is more than 19 months old. At second, this is the major function of the service pack, to replace older files with newer ones. SE SP 2.1a replaces about 180 system files. Petr

If you need more information you should also provide more information. What motherboard do you have? Or with what chipset? What is displayed in BIOS? What Windows version do you use? Do you suppose to use concurrently other operaing systems on this box? Some motherboards support >137GB, some not. Some BIOSes support >137GB, some not. Some drivers support >137GB, some not. Useful reading: http://www.48bitlba.com/ Use Google. Petr

Does it mean that everyhing works fine, just the translation of a domain name to IP address fails? It looks like you have problem with DNS settings. Quick check can be done by winipcfg utility or by ipconfing command line utility. The output should look like: Windows IP Configuration C:\>ipconfig /all Host Name . . . . . . . . . : PETR4 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.138 Node Type . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid NetBIOS Scope ID. . . . . . : IP Routing Enabled. . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . : No NetBIOS Resolution Uses DNS : No 0 Ethernet adapter : Description . . . . . . . . : 3Com EtherLink PCI Physical Address. . . . . . : 00-04-75-76-33-36 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes IP Address. . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.4 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . : 10.0.0.138 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.138 Primary WINS Server . . . . : 10.0.0.138 Secondary WINS Server . . . : Lease Obtained. . . . . . . : 01 09 06 7:23:58 PM Lease Expires . . . . . . . : 01 09 06 8:23:58 PM This is real world example of Windows Me connected to ADSL router, this ADSL router serves as DHCP server and DNS proxy. You can do the same on other computers that woks fine and comapre the results. Petr

Just short look into the file shows that all names of CPUs were removed from 4.10.2224 version (and not form 4.90.3001 version) so it would be probably impossible to make simple patch. So there are two possibilities: 1. To use 4.10.2224 without CPU info 2. To use 4.10.2222 with patched string 205 from %d to %lu in stringtable resource 13. I prefer the first one. The CPU detection is limited to old CPU models anyway. If I want to know the CPU, it is much better to use any freeware tool like CPU-Z. It will give me much more information. Petr

Some additional comments: I'd consider to add: KB892211: The Software Update for Web Folders: January 25, 2005 fp4autl.dll 4.0.2.7523 fp4awec.dll 4.0.2.4715 fpext.msg msdaipp.dll 11.0.6715.15 msdapml.dll 11.0.5510.0 msonsext.dll 11.0.6715.15 nsextint.dll 11.0.5510.0 pkmws.dll 11.0.5510.0 places.exe (?) and many registry entries. Q312586: Support for Euro Currency Characters with a Spanish (Traditional Sort) Keyboard Layout This keyboard layout can be set in English Windows too, now it has to be considered if it is always better then the original one. Q281921: Computer Suspends After Resuming with Keyboard Power Key Since only Japanese version was available, here is English version of Configmg.vxd 4.90.3002. Q327517: New Dialing Rules in the Czech Republic Effective September 22, 2002 Just registry entry How to install hotfixes that are included in cumulative security updates for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 Just registry entry, necessary for installinq QFE versions instead of GDR versions of IE patches. Then I'd consider: wintrust.dll 5.131.2195.6824 (from KB835732) crypt32.dll 5.131.2195.6824 (from KB835732) dispex.dll should be used from Windows Script 5.6 for Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition, and Windows NT 4.0 package (45112 bytes). I'm not sure what powercfg.cpl is better, if the original one (4.90.3000.1) or 5.00.3103.1000 ported from Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 to Windows 98 SE, hotfix Q258680: Screen Saver Activation While Suspended May Result in the Computer to Stop Responding. I see no difference. Maybe somebody with UPS? Maybe the MS Active Accessibility 2.0 files according to erpdude post could be added. Maybe WMF patch - either already prepared WMF Patch by Paolo Monti or promissed GRC patch. Next two hotfixes are not needed in English version of Windows Me: Q305360: Fault in Module Rnaapp.exe When You Try to Establish a Modem Connection to the Internet This hotfix fixes problem with long string in Brazilian Portuguese version of Rasapi32.dll, therefore not needed in English version. Q279469: Unable to Create a Complete Startup Disk with Some Localized Versions of Windows ME This hotfix corrects wrong translation in Msdos.ilf file, therefore not needed in English version. One cosmetical change: In SPUPDATE.INF [AddReg.Hotfixes] the section 811630 should be renamed to 896358. 83 files have not the original date and are dated in the range 16-Nov-05 to 23-Dec-05. Petr

This is one possibility - this is sample .BAT file that will show if stmgr is running: @echo off ps | find /i "stmgr">NUL if not errorlevel 1 ECHO stmgr.exe is running! Here is shown how it works: C:\test>ps PID PRIO THR NAME ff0fafad high 13 4 c:\windows\system\kernel32.dll ffffe94d norm 8 1 c:\windows\system\msgsrv32.exe fffe0649 norm 8 1 c:\windows\system\mprexe.exe fffe63dd norm 8 1 c:\program files\tv viewer\tvwakeup.exe fffe77bd norm 8 2 c:\windows\system\mstask.exe fffe5db1 norm 8 5 c:\windows\system\ssdpsrv.exe fffe62b9 norm 8 5 c:\program files\tv viewer\annclist.exe fffeea69 norm 8 9 c:\windows\explorer.exe fffd68e5 norm 8 1 c:\windows\taskmon.exe fffdb545 norm 8 2 c:\windows\system\systray.exe fffc2659 norm 8 3 c:\windows\system\wmiexe.exe fffd5aa1 norm 8 2 d:\utils\totalcmd\totalcmd.exe fffc5d69 norm 8 4 c:\windows\system\restore\stmgr.exe fffd319d norm 8 1 c:\windows\system\winoa386.mod fffe8221 norm 8 1 d:\winme\ps.exe C:\test>stmgrtest stmgr.exe is running! C:\test>kill 0xfffc5d69 [kill] PID -238231 (0xFFFC5D69) killed! C:\test>stmgrtest C:\test> Both ps and kill utilities comes from the same package as getver utility. The best would be to be able to kill the stmgr process by the mesp installer, maybe there is a way how to extract PID of stmgr process and pass it as a parameter to kill utility, or it should be very easy to write simple utility in C that would just kill stmgr.exe process. Unfortunately I'm not a programmer so I can't write it myself. Maybe there is a command line utility that can kill the process of given name? Windows XP contains taskkill command but it is not in WinME. I tried to Google for possible solution and found simple code: public void KillProcess(string name) { foreach (Process processToKill in Process.GetProcessesByName(name)) { processToKill.Kill(); } } or SysInternals' PsKill works on NT 4 and higher only. Maybe http://www.teamcti.com/pview/PrcView.zip could be the right one. This is sample bat file that seems to work as expected: @echo off pv.exe stmgr.exe >nul if NOT ERRORLEVEL 1 goto FOUND echo Process stmgr.exe is not running goto END :FOUND echo Process stmgr.exe is running and will be stopped pv.exe -f -k stmgr.exe goto END :END Petr
