  1. It's too general question. What "USB Flash device"? What is the VID and PID? Is the VID and PID of your flash device listed in USBSTOR.INF? What "vedndor's drivers" do you use? Before installing nUSB all other USB storage drivers should be removed (in Safe Mode) including their INF files from %windir%\INF folder and all USB flash devices should be removed from the system. The best way is to install nUSB on fresly installed Windows 98 SE. Then you will install the nUSB driver and then you can plug in your USB flash device. There is no warranty that all devices will really work. Petr
  2. But as you say, this is a question for Gape and Petr, not me. I would guess that, like other components of SP2.1a, Q282949 and Q285895 are there just in case you have a specific component installed (in this case, WMI v.1.5). If you have WMI v.1.5 installed, then hey - here are two updates for that. If not, then so be it. It doesn't mean that Gape or Petr are necessarily endorsing WMI v.1.5 as a great thing to have for 98 SE (but please consult Gape and Petr for their own actual opinions - what do I know? ). This is exactly my opinion. SE SP just checks if WMI 1.5 is installed and in positive case it performs Q282949 and Q285895 fixes. Petr
  3. What registry entries do you mean? If you look into Q313829.INF, there are just the following lines: [Sedgen.Rpsc] VerInst q313829 [Bindfile.reg] HKLM,"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer","DisableFlushWrites",1,01,00,00,00 HKLM,"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer","UseCopyMaxBufferSize",1,01,00,00,00 SPUPDATE.INF contains: ; 313829 HKLM,"%CurrentVersion%\Explorer","DisableFlushWrites",1,01,00,00,00 HKLM,"%CurrentVersion%\Explorer","UseCopyMaxBufferSize",1,01,00,00,00 HKLM,"%CurrentVersion%\RunOnce","q313829..",,"%25%\Verinst.exe q313829" so everything should be OK. Windows Update MAY also check the version of shell32.dll file if it is 4.72.3812.600 or newer. If everything seems to be correct, I'd try tu use Filemon and Regmon to see what is the Windows Update checking. Or even other way, I'd try to use Regshot and/or InstallWatch to see what changes are done by Q313829 update on clean system. Petr
  4. If you mean the following files:Html32.cnv Mswrd832.cnv Msconv97.dll Mswrd632.wpc then these files are part of standard Windows 98 (SE) install. There are also updates intedned for Windows 98 (SE) containing some of these files, like Q823559. SESP just contains newer version of these files. I've read at least one report that new Mswrd632.wpc behaves better in Windows 98 SE than the original one so I believe it was correct to add this update into SESP. Petr
  5. Just for review. FESP201-alpha1 contains the following IE updates: Q226325 mshtml.dll 4.72.3616.1301 mshtml4.exe download Q226325 mshtmlwb.dll 4.72.3616.1400 Q168617 urlmon.dll 4.72.3510.2000 IE4DIA.EXE download and for OE 4.01SP1: Q234681 msoert.dll 4.72.3518.0900 en-x86-Q234681.exe download The latest official mshtml.dll for IE4.01SP1 seems to be: Q250316 mshtml.dll 4.72.3525.600 dated 06-Jan-2000 q250316.exe download surprisingly it is newer than the file with higher verssion number: Q226325 mshtml.dll 4.72.3616.1301 dated 13-Apr-1999 The latest updates for IE4.01SP2 seem to be: Q265258 asctrls.ocx 4.72.3718.1400 4q265258.exe download Q244540 inseng.dll 4.72.3710.2600 q244540.exe download Q269368 mshtml.dll 4.72.3720.400 q269368.exe download Q226325 mshtmlwb.dll 4.72.3616.1400 mshtml4.exe download Q246094 shdocvw.dll 4.72.3711.2900 q246094.exe download Q244356 urlmon.dll 4.72.3710.2500 q244356.exe download Q254902 wininet.dll 4.72.3718.900 q254902.exe download Petr
  6. In Czech discussion forums I've found many reports describing a reproducible problem with KB905915 fix: If default browser is Mozilla Firefox, new page from within IE is opened in Mozilla Firefox and not in IE. Clicking "Home" button causes hang up. And several other strange things. All people were able to isolate the problem to KB905915 fix - when uninstalled, everything was again fine, when installed again, problems arised again. Nobody reported exactly what file was causing this behavior. I have noticed no problem on my XPSP2 and W98SE computers. It shall be noted that the WindowsXP-KB905915-x86-ENU.exe patch contains two sets of files - GDR and QFE, for browseui.dll, GDR version is 6.00.2900.2802 (xpsp_sp2_gdr.051123-1230) and the QFE version is 6.00.2900.2802 (xpsp.051123-1236). Petr
  7. If not Q276602 then Q285882 should be correct, or not? Petr
  8. another good reason why the dsound.dll file (4.07) should either not be included in the 98se SP or the pack should not install that file if DX8 or DX9 is installed under Win98se. In English version of SESP it is correct. No, in the current version the dialog should appear. Have you used the last version? Petr
  9. I suppose it is because both these files come from MS05-013: Vulnerability in the DHTML editing component ActiveX control could allow code execution and there must be some (unknown to us) reason why Microsoft have different file in Windows 98 SE version and Windows 2000 version of this fix. No, SE SP 2.1a contains Windows 98 version of this file. It comes from Directory Services Client Update for Windows 98. The simplest thing is to google for vredir.vxd 4.10.0.2231 - the first result is this knowedgebase article. Petr
  10. Hi, the English version should work but many system messages would change from Spanish to English. There are some files that should be modified for spanish version. Hardware.hlp - available in Q242975 update Hotplug.dll 4.10.2224 - available in Q242975 update Systray.exe 4.10.2224 - available in Q242975 update QFECheck.exe - available in Q242975 update QFECheck.hlp - available in Q242975 update Ios.vxd 4.10.2225 - you have to ask Microsoft for Spanish version of Q239696 hotfix User.exe 4.10.2231 - you have to ask Microsoft for Spanish version of Q291362 hotfix !readme.txt - has to be translated by you _nusb.inf and maybe other infs - has to be translated by you if you need Q242975 update can be downloaded here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/win.../242975SPA8.EXE For building the installation package you will need the iexpress utility, it is part of the IEAK - can be downloaded here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/ie6...XP/ES/ieak6.exe Iexpress utility uses SED (Self Extraction Directive) files that describe how the package should be build. It can build new SED files or it can use already prepared file. I have prepared an example of such file for Spanish nusb here: http://www.winpack.org/nsp_petr/nusb221es.sed - it expects all files in nusb221es folder. If you want just to build the package with no interactive options, you can use the following command line: iexpress /N nusb221es.sed You may also want to translate the "FriendlyName" in the .SED file. I tried to localize Ios.vxd and user.exe by myself and build the package here: http://www.winpack.org/nsp_petr/nusb221es.exe It was not tested at all (I have no Spanish Windows 98 SE here) so please be careful and backup first!. It may not install or crash your system, I don't know! If you will need more information about INF files and other related things, you can check te following website: http://www.winpack.org/petr/INF_web/ - the original disappeared so I just mirrored it from web archive. Petr
  11. Windows XP SP2 contains even newer version 5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158) and it seems to have the same dependencies - and the same missing functions in it. MS DLL database http://support.microsoft.com/dllhelp/ contains many different versions but nothing for Windows 9x. Dot Net Framework 1.1 contains version 4.0.1371.1 and it is packaged in _1275__VC_System_PSAPIforNT4_RTL_x86____.msm file - but it is not installed on Windows 98. This DLL is not part of Windows 98 SE and I'm not sure if it is used on Windows 98 (SE) at all. Petr
  12. Why do you think that this file requires DirectX 7? According to the Knowledge base article Q269604 this hotfix is intended for both Microsoft Windows 98 Standard Edition and Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition with no additional conditions. Petr
  13. Here is complete list of numbers: http://www.winpack.org/petr/INF_web/copyfile.htm You can combine them, e.g. 1024 + 4 = 1028, 1024 + 32 = 1056 etc. Petr Edit: new URL
  14. Details about modifiying shell32.dll and explorer.exe: SHELL32.DLL 4.72.3812.600 (from Q313829) Changed icons to look like Windows 2000 icons ICON 18 (Network Neighborhood) ICON 32 (Empty Recycle Bin) ICON 33 (Full Recycle Bin) ICON 35 (Desktop) BITMAP 130 - Old Windows logo changed to new Windows logo, looks like XP? EXPLORER.EXE 4.72.3612.1700 (from Internet Explorer 4.01 SP2/5.5 SP2/6.0 SP1) Changed icons to look as Windows 2000 icons ICON 100 (My Computer) ICON 103 (Desktop) ICON 108 (Recycle Bin) BITMAP 157 (left banner in the Start Menu - added text "Second Edition") BITMAP 161 (grey banner "Windows 95" changed to "Windows 98" - where it is used?) Windows Explorer Patch (256 color TrayIcons) http://www.dr-hoiby.com/TrayIconIn256Color/ Find sequence 01,53,6A,01,6A,32,E8 and replace by 01,53,6A,11,6A,32,E8 (1 bit changed, 01 -> 11) Test: http://www.dr-hoiby.com/TrayIconIn256Color...lorTrayTest.zip Also the "green arrow" icon in hotplug.dll and systray.exe is 16x16 only and does not look nice on some screens, it is nicer to change it to 16x16 + 32x32 icons from Windows Me. It is: HOTPLUG.DLL - icon 100 SYSTRAY.EXE - icon 210 Petr
  15. So here is a candidate for new version, VIP.386 4.10.2227 from Q269388 kindly made available by maximus-decim, for those who don't like Rapidshare I have repost the hotfix here: http://www.winpack.org/petr/98/269388USA8.EXE Edit: And also 4.10.2003 for the First Edition Service Pack. Petr
  16. If you binary compare them, version 4.10.2227 is so different to 4.10.2226 (and 4.10.2224) that it does not look like simple modding. What versions exist? Q238329 3.8.1999 14:50 4.10.2223 Q238453 23.9.1999 11:39 4.10.2224 Q242962 1.10.1999 17:38 4.10.2225 Q259728 10.5.2000 13:20 4.10.2226 Q?????? 9.8.2000 15:27 4.10.2227 Q329128 1.8.2002 12:27 4.10.2228 (not available) So it looks like 4.10.2227 COULD be original file from Microsoft. Petr
  17. MOUHID.VXD - this was the problem of improper version number 4.10.2223.0 (in Intellipoint 4.12) instead of 4.10.0.2223 (in Q254660) stored in the file. These files are otherwise identical, just version 4.10.0.2223 is correct. NUSB22 does not contain VIP.386 file. Do you know what is the origin of this 4.10.2227 version? You wrote in http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/READ1ST.TXT "patched Win98 SE VIP.386 4.10.2227 modded by Maximus-Decim" but the file has too many differences to be just modded - at least in my opinion. Petr
  18. Have you tried to ask Microsoft? Many hotfixes are available in Italian. Petr
  19. It contains: Msadco.dll 2.12.5118.0 Msadcs.dll 2.12.5118.0 from Q329414 update. Version 2.1 although I'm not sure if it is complete. Q329414 patch updates MDAC 2.1, 2.5 and 2.6 files only. I have no idea, it depends on your needs. As you can read here: Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8 SP1: Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000; Windows 98; Windows ME; Windows NT Petr
  20. BTW, does anybody know good worldwide list of used operating systems? Here it is for Czech Republic: http://www.toplist.cz/global.html and Windows 98 has about 10% but Windows Me below 0.1%, 100 times less. Is it similar in USA or in UK? Petr
  21. It appears that the cosmetic bug described in MSKB: Q272620: Negative Hard Disk Free Size Reported on Virtual Memory Tab in System Properties can be solved easily by changing string 205 in string resource 13 in sysdm.cpl file - from: 205,%c:\ %dMB Free to 205,%c:\ %luMB Free Patched file is here: http://www.winpack.org/petr/98/sysdm.zip But what about all other changes in 4.10.2224 version of sysdm.cpl file? Does anybody know about them? Petr
  22. Yes, I have version 1.06, it is the latest. I have the latest Nero ASPI WNASPI32.DLL 2.0.1.74 (reported by Nero Infotool as working properly), on the link you gave me is old version 2.0.0.11. Yes, Plextor states: "It is recommended to use the secondary MASTER position to have the best performance." Petr
  23. Hi Gape, thanks for ideas but everything mentioned above seems to be OK. Petr
  24. Have you ever tried the WinME's SPOOL32.DLL ? Do you mean SPOOL32.EXE or SPOOLSS.DLL? Petr
