  2. It could mena the drive was on its way out, but then again i have had drives make od noises and clicks and stuff, and lasted for years..now that i have been using harware for quite some years now, im starting to think thatHds just get louder over time....could be my imagination though =Drew

  6. GreenBud- By doing what you have done, u may make the cd not bootable or casue some other issuess. I would make a clone like you said befor, you ca do this by using such tools as Blindwrite suite or Clone cd. This applications can make perfect images of the cd in ISO format regardless of copy protection, then will allow you to write it to disk..that will give a perfect copy 100% =Drew
  7. In the past few weeks, i have noticed this problem while doing some tech work at my job....as it seems there is a nasty virus that will creat a folder on your Hd that can be hidden somtimes and is inacessable and non movable. Some how this virus creates a small partition on your main drive that usally is called "-" or somthing of that nature, in it contains a virus that can damage your system and disable NAV as well as Optical devises, the random folder on your HD contains instructions to access the small partition. Im not positive if this is your problem, but i have seen about 3 of these in the past two weeks. I reccomend loading up a xp pro disk and looking at the availiable partitions to install to. If the random and very small partition is there, u know what your infor, good luck =Drew

  9. first off your gonna wanna grab the latest update to norton, then id reccomend getting the cleaner to clean out possiable trojens. Also pick up Ad aware and update that aswell, scan ur hds and see if that helps. Alos i would reccomend clearing all you internet cach , cookies and history. =Drew
  10. YEs you can do that but windows 98 and Me will not format the drive, they will only overwrite. So if he wants to clean the drive off , then he should format it in DOs =Drew
  11. GreenBud First off your going to need a boot disk, if u have a win9x/Me they can be made from the add/remove section under the Startup disk Tab. Boot from the floopy and load CD Rom support,Once in DOS you can format the drive, by typing "format c:" once that finishes restart and load the cd support once again, put the Win 98 cd in and type the letter of the cd drove, for example E: and then type setup. This will start the Windows setup. =Drew

  21. Regarding your first question, although complicated, loading an os or application in the Ram is somewhat of a complicated process, and for the most part requires alternative hardware to work right. I have seen Operating systems and particular applications work strictly off the ram, and they were very fast! YEt it is a very expencive and complicated process for it all to work out properly... As for your second question, partitions are a very effective way to keep your system runing fast and safe, i highly reccommend partitoning out the first 4 gigs or a drive for the os and using the remaining for games and software, this cuts down defrag times and also seperates software for the system dirs, which can be great for futeure formating, without the loss of the OS =Drew
  22. If he reinstalls, the password proctected previous install, will encrypt itself, and he wont be able to get the files. As far as i know, thers no way out of this, i think you should reinstall windows on another disk, set the current to slave and pick off the files that you need, then start for frsh, and remember your password this time... =Drew
