  4. You can buy software to remove software you don't want... Uninstallers; You can many times find the unwise uninstaller in the program files folder for the program you want to remove Backup all your important files before doing anything... Back them up to cd or dvd... Somehow something has removed important registry settings causing your buttons not to show up... You can rebuild your installation or format and reinstall if it's really bothering you... The following page from Fred Langa may interest you: http://www.informationweek.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=185301251 For me, i usually perform a format and reinstall to have a fresh version of windows ready to go... 8. You do NOT need WGA for Windows 2000...lose it and reinstall... or, use autostreamer to integrate SP4 into your win2k, install and download autopatcher for win 2000...autopatcher has all the updates needed for win2k...The neowin.net site has download links for autopatcher and also see more info on this site...
  9. Call me Crazy...'cause i am...However, one of your very kind msdn pros gave information some time ago here about this and, the fix is much simpler than all this other stuff you are trying to do> please inspect the "boot.ini" file below: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /NOEXECUTE=ALWAYSOFF /fastdetect Additionally, you can elevate install rights using gpedit.msc.... THis is all freeware from Microsoft... Einstein once said that...'everything should be made as simple as possible--not simpler...' Works for me...
  10. It's out there because i've seen it but my head injury has affected and effected my memory...google will eventually lead you to it if no one here remembers either
  11. After all is said, done and questioned, It IS much easier all round to simply purchase a valid os from a msft valid supplier...Keep it and if windows dies, simply format and reinstall...no mystery...we all are running out of time on the planet; accordingly, as Einstein once said... "Everything should be made as simple as possible--not simpler."
  12. My Toshiba, not that different from yours, allows to fully reinstall your os... Insert your cd and explore; then, after reinstall, update your drivers at the new toshiba support site...make copies of the drivers, too --as you may need them later the next time you decide it's time to reinstall...
  13. THIS REQUIRES WIN XP SP2 AND A VALID SN. THIS IS USED WITH INTERNET EXPLORER ONLY. DO THIS BEFORE GOING BACK TO WINDOWS UPDATE THE SECOND TIME AFTER YOU REBOOT FROM THE WGA INSTALL UPDATE. 1. Open IE 2. Click on Tools 3. Click on Internet options 4. Click to the Programs tab 5. Click on the Manage Add-ons button. 6. Select Windows Genuine Advantage 7. Click Disable 8. Done, now you can do Windows updates again. Genuine Windows validation is NOT required to use the Automatic Updates feature. Keep your computer up-to-date today.
  14. This man know his stuff...Many thanks... In the boot.ini file edit line "optin" to "AlwaysOff": [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=AlwaysOff /fastdetect http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875352#5

  19. Since you won't be needing your old smaller hard drive, try partitioning the drive with partition magic or similar, install another os like xp. Then explore the old partition with the newly installed os and find and delete the obnoxious file. Of course, before you do the above, you could try to rename and / or change the buggers file extention and delete the bugger...Works for me but, i've got a multiboot system setup...
  20. Many thanks...that was a great and helpful article but, I was hoping to find the original source text book as I'll bet there are tons more of usefull information therein... I will continue to search. thanks again for the Langa link...good stuff. regards
  21. Hello all and many thanks for being here... A friend introduced me to : cleanmgr /sageset:99 & cleanmgr /sagerun:99 To better clean an NT system from the start>>run menu. it can also be made into a bat file. She does NOT know where the information originated. Does anyone here know where such information may have originated and if there is a book or manual to explain all these hidden abilities of NT. PS. I did try it and I don't think it did any harm but, of course, since I'm not a guru, I thought someone here might know because of your excellent abilities. Many thanks in advance.
  22. Could someone please tell us where this information is found... be it a book for somewhere else?
  23. Many thanks for your help. I may have answered my own question from earlier about MS Data execution protection a.k.a. Windows File Protection. XP SP2 is a bear to work with and restricts alot of actions away from the user. I found this beta tool which i've not tested but, it does hold promise for turning off SP2 restrictions via Windows File Protection a.k.a. Data execution Prevention. Windows File Protection Switcher 0.8 Beta 5 stars because it works as advertised... this can permanently turn on or off windows file protection ON WIN XP SP2, SO YOU CAN REPAIR OR REMOVE BAD FILES, ETC. Windows File Protection Switcher lets you disable and re-enable Windows File Protection (WFP). 25. Hello all. Has anyone found a way to turn off or disable Windows xp SP2 Data Execution Prevention "DEP"??This addition to SP2 refuses to install or won't allow the installation of perfectly fine software...Installable software is available but, It's just the principal that security without freedom is anathema. Eg., It would allow kav and zonealarm installation but not mcafee 8 or 9 and some others. It seems to me that DEP is arbitrary and perhaps capricious in what it will allow one to install on one's own machine. I do see the ability of MS to control future software installations and thereby control whose product you buy. But With the MS addition of antivirus and anti spyware soft companies... it's not hard to see MS controlling the future market in what will run or not run on Windows. Any thoughts on this? Regards
