Nothing specific needs to be running for floppy access. Did you use nLite on your Windows install?

I had a problem using win 98 freeware floppies in XP

until i discoverd the Program Compatibility Wizard in XP... :)

Also note that XP doesn't seem to be able to read 1.68, 1.72, or 1.84M capacities correctly even if drive is set to 2.88M in BIOS.
