  1. Offler, thank you for interesting topic. I have a couple of questions: do you think it is possible to install the newest Creative drivers on my Audigy1 (I'm using Audigy2 ZS drivers through ctcomp patch)? Btw, what is your sound card? Is it necessary to install KUP (I've tested it for only a short while)? If yes, do I need to configurate it in a special way, modify the registry, etc.

Yes, I was wrong but I remember that an older version made it possible to watch DVD (probably they removed support in never versions). You can try VLC player (definitely works with Win98SE) - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ or MPlayer from http://www2.mplayerhq.hu/design7/news.html

Petr, MPC is quite good but you can try also Zoom Player Standard (version 5.00 was just released) but honestly I don't know hardware requirements.
  4. Halohalo, not exactly: this link refers to SDK (Software Development Kit), whereas DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer shows that those systems are still supported: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;DisplayLang=en On the other hand it's interesting that redistributable version doesn't mention Win98/ME: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en Btw, you can easily unpack this library manually.
  5. Gape, sorry to hear about your problems but this is a great news that you'll continue to update that Service Pack.
  6. I fully confirm what halohalo has written (I use modified Audigy2 ZS WDM driver on my Audigy1, but it's also possible to install VxD driver). Btw, Audigy4 requires at least Windows 2000, X-Fi family Windows XP.
  7. Jeremy, as far as it is an exchange of opinions it's OK. It happens that we (Win9x users) react too harsh because quite often we're attacked for the use of these "ancient" OSes so we've become a little bit alergic to any critical opinion.
  8. Lunac, two things: the Catalyst 6.2 for Win98/ME was released on February 9th, 2006 and you can run also X800 family cards using this driver (beta status). https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2...ease_notes.html
  9. Maybe there are better solutions but in my case it works well. I've found an extension called MediaPlayerConnectivity which I hope will help you to solve the problem - http://membres.lycos.fr/sethnakht/ Btw, I'm using combination MPC (Media Player Classic) plus VLC media player.
  10. I've installed Win98SE on the computer of my sister but it wouldn't work because of the PCIe graphic card. If your GeForce FX is a AGP version this motherboard should work. Btw, I recommend you using the chipset maker (ULi) drivers instead of the motheboard maker. http://www.nvidia.com/page/uli_drivers.html or http://www.uli.com.tw/eng/support/drivers.php (under M1695)
  11. Petr, you're stuborn but so am I! Motherboard you've mentioned is not a good example: I don't know when it was released but its chipset was introduced in September 2003 (at that time Win98SE/ME was quite popular). Btw, it's quite interesting that ASRock has removed drivers for 939Dual-SATA2 for Win98SE/ME (probably in relation with the upcoming release of Vista). Both motherboards will work with Win98SE/ME when you use drivers of chipset makers but without integrated sound and in that respect you're right. Personally, I prefer using a "normal" sound card instead of built-in sound. The quality of integrated sound has greatly improved over the last few years therefore for most of users it's satisfactory.
  12. Sorry ,Petr, I'm afraid you haven't read my previous post carefully enough. For most if not all motherboard makers the Win9x family is dead (especially since July 11 when Microsoft officially ended support for those systems) what results in Win2000 as minimum requirement. That's the reason that ASRock doesn't mention the drivers for Win98SE/ME. This is not however the case of chipset makers: http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageI...&CatID=1110 for 775Dual-VSTA http://www.nvidia.com/page/uli_drivers.html for 939Dual-SATA2 and 939Dual-VSTA (both on the same chipset) In the case of 939Dual-VSTA there may be a problem with audio codec. It uses C-Media CM6501 7.1 while 939Dual-SATA2 uses Realtek 850 7.1channel AC'97 - http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dlac97...p;Software=True Sorry for posting twice.
  13. Sorry ,Petr, I'm afraid you haven't read my previous post carefully enough. 14. Sorry, Petr, but I think that you're wrong (both are compatible).
  15. Two more reviews: 775Dual-VSTA - http://www.ocworkbench.com/2006/asrock/775Dual-VSTA/g1.htm 939Dual-VSTA - http://www.ocworkbench.com/2006/asrock/939dual-vsta/g1.htm
  16. I think you've IMO at least two interesting options: 1) ASRock 775Dual-VSTA (based on VIA PT880 Pro/Ultra chipset) and you can still using your CPU, RAM and GPU with possible upgrade to Conroe family + DDR2 (even I'm AMD fan I must admit that this is a hell of the beast). This motheboard also support PCIe graphic port - the only small cons is it work in 4x mode (normally x16). Three articles about this motherboard on the Anandtech: http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2814 http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2813 http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2810 Looks like the chipset support Win98SE: http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageI...&CatID=1110 2) On AMD platform very popular ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 (not K8 Combo-Z which you've mentioned) or just released a newer version 939Dual-VSTA (different audio codec plus couple of the small changes) both on the ULI M1695 chipset (support for all 939 CPU, including Athlon 64 X2, AGP x8 + PCIe x16, possible upgrade to AM2 socket via AM2CPU Board). Also this chipset support Win98SE: http://www.nvidia.com/page/uli_drivers.html For more info check this very good forum: http://www.ocwforums.com/bbs/forumdisplay.php?f=31 Chozo4 - you can run Cool'n'Quiet technology on Win98SE using a WinME driver: http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/Techni...71_9706,00.html To get full advantage of the dualcore CPU you need at least Win2000 (not possible in Win98SE through OS limitations).
  17. This is quite interesting beacause I've read that maximum value is 512 (for Win98).
  18. I'm afraid there's a misunderstanding: what I wanted to know was a value in registry not in utorrent.
  19. Janus zeal, could you say how much it improved your download speed (it interests me in view of emule configuration)? What was the value you used (I've a cable connection and I don't know what a value would be safe)?
  20. No problem with this site: Win98SE + Flash Player 9 + Java Runtime 5.0 (Update 7) + Firefox 1.5.0.5 or IE 6.0 SP1.
  21. I'm not sure that's the reason but check this article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;EN-US;312108
  22. EAT MY DUST, not exactly: Bill Gates is right now in extended support phase (till July 2008).
  23. Avast Home Edition, very good IMO (I've been using it for a long time).
  24. RainyShadow, I have no personal experience with those cards but if you plan to play, even occasionally, I wouldn't recommend them (FX family really sucks in the performance). I think a better idea would be to look for GeForce 6600GT/6600 (they are cheap and quite efficient) or wait for AGP version of GeForce 7600/7300 (probably in July).
  25. Timeless, thanks for the link (this thread is quite funny). Honestly, this guy is really obsessed.
