  1. The only difference is, that Professional has Access, Publisher and Business Contact Manager, Access and Publisher can also be bought seperately, so you haven't to upgrade later, if you need one of, buy only that app you need. So what do you need? the only difference are the containing Applications.
  2. For me it's no problem which notepad replacement you take, but if it's Metapad, please replace the icon, it looks bad, the pink color make it look like a children's toy, just my opinion, don't know what others say, but I think it makes it worse because of that...

Do you mean Longhorn? It's very unstable and you won't find any drivers for it, I had problems with a Creative AudioPCI of VMWare, this card works without drivers in Win2k XP and ME but Longhorn hasn't got the driver!
  4. What about Windows OS X.98.2 ... even newer than Mac OS Tiger, I think the guys from Apple aren't angry if we take a byte of their Apple OS name.
  5. PLUS 98 is an additional program to Windows 98, it's like Microsoft Plus! for XP or 95l You need the regular 98se Key.
  6. Sorry, XP as speedy as 98, I mean. I would apreciate that.
  7. Ok, so I don't install Windows XP on my 900 MHz Athlon because my TV-Card works not good with it, black borders, less crisp pictures etc. That's the main point. You can tell me, that this could be fixed, but XP also don't start as speedy as xp.
  8. BTW. the eyecandy of XP is not bad, but fortunately you can change it - alltrough only after patching - to your taste, on my XP-Box I have OS X theme. To all Mods: PLEASE close this thread, it is so senseless... and only a flood.
  9. Ah now I see what you meant with low spec. Hmm I will see for Office XP, 'till then I use OOo or something like that. thanks to all
  10. I don't want it to do anything... if you want to know what XP does that Windows 98 does not... read all 43 pages of the thread I have explained it many, many times. Ok I find any time, I'll do. I do... why? Because for one, IE auto authenticates using windows logon information. No other browser does. Also, surely you have seen the news lately with all the vulnerabilites in FF and all of the patches. Yes but in FF you mustn't wait 'till the next Patchday for an update. But don't tell me about FF vulnerabilites, IE has and had A LOT more. Ok giving away a safe system for some convienience, like you want, I don't care. Ok thank you, that's what I wanted to hear... lets see what happens in two years, perhaps I'll buy a PowerMac and get rid of these troubles with M$ Versioning Problems. By the way, I use only 98 on my primary PC, because XP doesn't work well with my Hauppauge card. EDIT: Sorry, didn't see Page 44, so I didn't need all the quotes.
  11. And who uses IE? I use MSN Messenger on my XP box. Agreed, one XP PC for some things is not bad, but why upgrading where you don't need.
  12. I have 2 PCs with, one (900 MHz Athlon) with 98 and the other (1500 MHz Centrino) with XP, I think XP has very useful functions for mobile Computers, such as included W-LAN support for researching Access Points or Power Management support. But I don't need these functions on an old Athlon, there I want to see TV and 9x/Me and NT are the only OSes who support Overlay, I know that XP runs flowingly on my Athlon, I had installed it on a second HD but I can only see a 768x578 pixel TV and that is MUCH fuzzier than that on 98, because the WDM driver is bader than the VFW. Windows 98 starts up in seconds and shows you a clean desktop, it is MUCH sleeker than XP, not preloaded with all that sucking things like Movie Maker, sure you can use nLite, but I need a system which I can install everything which is compatible, I had trouble to install SonicStage on my brothers notebook, because we did a very lightweight XP. I plan to upgrade my hardware, but I will surely stay on 98. By the way: 98 means 98 SE with SP2.0 just for records. I ask the threadopener and everyone who agree him, what do you want 98 to do, which you can do on XP?
  13. I think that's no problem, he said it's on a Pentium 233 MHz.
  14. Well it isn't really a low-specs system for office tasks, I think an AMD Athlon running at 900 MHz is enough for some Word and Excel tasks even in O2k3, what I don't understand is, why does Office XP run on the 9x system while O2k3 doesn't? What I read is that there's no much difference between them.
  15. The only Office version I have is 2003, I bought it for my laptop, the EULA allows me to install it on a desktop PC and a "portable computer" as well, so is there any (surely unofficial) patch to Office or Windows to install it anyway?
  16. To Nr.1 there's the WindowFX, but you need an older Version, newer ones only support 2000/XP, perhaps someone has Version 1.5 or so... To No. 2 I think that's a bug, that it only displays five items
  17. Did you try the card on XP? Does that work, just to point out the problem miko said.
  18. Do you have Excel 2003? Then you cannot install it on Me or 98, try getting Excel 2002 aka Excel XP, that will work on both. read the EULA, i'm unsure, but I think you can take a copy of Excel XP from someone who has it, as long as you have your Excel 2003 copy.

Another thing is: Right Click on My Computer, select Properties go to Hardware click on Device Manager, if you press Alt+Tab you see the ugly Device Manager Icon. By the way through Off-Topic: Does anybody know how to activate the 3D icons in Office 2003 with the classic theme, the silver look combined with violett if you touch it (with the mouse) looks very ugly. It is also noticeable with 3rd Party Styles.
  20. For my Ultimate XP CD, I need more than one CD, does somebody know how to split them? I'm new to this and clueless. Thanks in advance Jeeva
  21. I think you cannot go for it, you must go for a new pc to use Longhorn, so I'll definetly don't go for it, as I don't go for a new PC after I bought my new Notebook last year.
  22. On that PC I would install 98se, ME has some advantages, but they are not needed and make the System very slow, I have installed Me on my Athlon 900 MHz due to recommendation from THIS forum, but only the faster Startup is the advantage to Me. By the way, even if Off topic, try Windows 2000, because it has more support to recent Programs as Office 2003 and so. But as answer to your question: Install Windows 98 SE.

What about skinned cmd.exe, I think you need to patch the cmd.exe for that.
