  1. When is that supposed to happen? I just tested it by plugging in a USB flash drive (in VMware, but still), no problem.
  2. Did you ever get it (=the files I sent you long time ago) to work properly as it was supposed to? It could be a nice feature to add to nLite.
  3. DL.

    [Suggestion]

It wouldn't hurt if it was added, but it might be a bit dangerous if you accidentally hit the delete key (there are undelete-progs, but they don't work 100% every time).
  4. Why don't you just remove even more by using nLite? Many people can fit Office in there and still have a nice and fully functional Windows installation including all updates. How big is the Symantec prog, you could probably put all the updates and more in there if you were to remove it?
  5. I totally agree with nitroshift, that's the way to go.
  6. Great find, so simple, yet no one of us has figured it out! I had my suspicions long time ago when reading that it didn't matter if the files where compressed or not. However I never actually thought of really trying it, since usually installations are very picky when it comes to the source files. This could easily be incorporated into nLite as an option and thereby also speed up the nLite process a bit (no recompression of files updated). Who cares if it takes up a bit more space on the disc, when the installation is quicker and there is plenty of space to fill up on a DVD?
  7. As dread said, you could easily remove some components using nLite (if you haven't already)... There are 870MB/99min and 900MB/100min CD-R:s, but getting a DVD burner might be a good idea since you may want to add some more to your disc (Office & drivers?).
  8. Take a look at this thread.
  9. It is indeed possible, but it's not a small one... It will require some scipting. Do you want to display only the logo of the CPU-manufacturer (for example Intel or AMD), or the logo of the specific CPU (AthlonXP, P4, Athlon64, Core 2 Duo, Celeron)?
  10. Can you extract the contents of the file using for example WinRAR?
  11. You could also simply use this method, but maybe that is not what you want? If you want the image to cover as much as in the screenshot you posted then use what neo mentioned, or if you want the image to the left only, then use my link.
  12. Creating a highly customized and tweaked unattended setup that works very well for your computer, the software you use and the way you use it is far from easy. It requires lots of time, skills and hard work/testing! Since everyone has their own hardware configuration and usage habits it's difficult to recommend something that works for all. You can use the guides and recommendations as a starting point/reference, but test all of it yourself. Always test your installations in VMWare or Virtual PC (or other virtualization sw) before you burn the CD/DVD and install on real hardware. @albator: Did you use a stopwatch or Bootvis to measure your boot time? Was it a full cold boot, a reboot or wakeup from hibernation/standby? A full boot (power-on to usable, including BIOS initialization time) in 8s (using a stopwatch) is very impressive, 8s measured with Bootvis is also very good. You need the right hardware and the correct tweaking for that, it definately cannot be done on all PC:s. I've managed to get 9s (Bootvis) with a P3 1.26+(512, 768 or 896 MB RAM?)+Maxtor 7200rpm HDD, but I'm quite sure I can do even better if tweaked correctly (missed a few things back then).
  13. @Sgt_Strider: Indexing: Speeds up searching by indexing files, see this link. Windows Audio: Provides and controls all audio support for Windows, see this one. Windows Time: Syncronizes the system time with a timeserver. Removable Storage: No it doesn't, may however affect tape drives or others. Read some more on the subject of services for example here, or search. No offence, but you really need to start searching for the info before asking in the forums.
  14. Did you remove anything or set any tweaks when using nLite? Unfortunately I don't know about the SATA drivers, I use DriverPacks.
  15. Do you get folders or an ISO-file when you run the .exe, or does it start the installation immediately?
  16. Check out this thread. Mount the iso you've got using Daemon Tools. Search for add-on making (or something like that) and you will find more info on the subject.
  17. Search and you will find! It's quite individual depending on which progs you use, which hardware you have, your skill level and the way you use your PC...
  18. @IcemanND: I have already mentioned those commands in this thread (post #5).
  19. You can probably replace the RAM in your laptop with larger ones...
  20. Make batches with start and stop commands:
  21. There should be drivers available for your card, or they will probably be released soon. You will need more RAM in Vista than you had for XP since the OS itself uses more (vLite will help a bit, but it cannot do extreme miracles), if you plan on playing any games you definitely will need more. Today even cheap low-end computers have 1 GB.
  22. @puntoMX: Don't you mean Tualatin, not Turion? And yes, some of them were hard to get.
  23. Hi there yourself, and welcome to the MSFN forums! There are lots of threads on the subject, so just browse and/or search and you will find the info you need. Always search before posting, the info is most likely already there but you just have to find it!
  24. I'm still with you, just observing to see if someone else is successful in opening the file. I forgot to mention I saw the file in hex too, but it didn't give me any useful info except the names. I did a binary comparison with another .doc-file to try to find out if the file structure looked the same; however I'm not used to working at the binary level so I didn't find anything. I had the idea on parts of the file being encrypted and the rest corrupted or altered to prevent opening, unfortunately I didn't know how/where to split the file. I tried several progs/services in order to maybe break the encryption and/or password, but none of them could even recognize the file.
  25. We need some help here! I've been working on this one for several hours now without any success. The file seems very important to the topic starter, but unfortunately she only has one copy of it (on a CDR that may've gone bad). The file is a standard .DOC and supposed to be written a few years back (2003) in MS Word in plain english using some common font (Arial/Helvetica/Times/Garmond or similar). I've tried (on a fresh copy of the file, sometimes trying more than one thing): -To open and/or convert it using a number of different text editing programs and office suits (97/XP/2003/2007/OpenOffice/WordPerfect/Wordpad/Notepad2/UltraEdit/DOS edit) -Rename the file in a number of different ways. -Open/extract it using other kinds of software (Photoshop/a few media players/PDF reader/WinRAR/UltraISO) -Recover and/or convert using many different progs and a few free online services specialized in the subject. -Change the coding and other things. The topic starter has, by my instructions, used a software (CDCheck) to read the file off the CD. She has also tried to read the cd using another computer. The file can be opened in for example Wordpad (not in Word), but without returning any readable info: ¥‚Ä\ ž”ps´ÐeÔÎså™.DÐD°_û__ü–_ïEºFîà<ë_° úN!6__~³ÃE ¬±nœ_ \7Îá,åO29Åž‹Ð§Ó_á¿ì]7àÏJ²ð”ßLÃ_'_=Ué¸6ˆÑuÕ _–C•)”_Ëš0‹€Ü*AÂv__ù…S£´¸_ÐoбQäUß‘…äÓñ¥Tõžwfs_j_ ‘_.‘SØWÑ¢®__”ù_ŒÝ_<_u’!=LúŒ‘¹('¬ì¦_ ‰¸E#gþ€ºØÐNé,\ŽŠÿò‘Ó®—3&ÁJÎH*Ù_W?Lˆ1Œ5gy ÕÙè1ÔþMœÆ†víÔ_†ö|ÒÆ&L•€j}Qy)g:VÔƒ÷úDWÍ_‘iT°YDàgVð C•æg‹áý__´æ'½/Øè_-ÎtŠì#¯ð‚Õþm§xR9^íçû_Îô‚d\_Ó#`7©™}u¦mC˜ñ_J\O(*U1_$¸(This is just a small sample of what it looks like.) I've got a few theories: -File is encrypted (haven't been asked for a password though, decryption softwares say the file is damaged) -It's corrupted/damaged (it's likely the case, however there seems to be something in it which we cannot read) -Some coding or font problem (can be possible, but is unlikely considering the language, fonts and software used) Edit: Just added Office 2007 to the list of progs I've used in trying to open this file.
