  1. Can someone give me a hand? I am very lost and know someone here has dealt with or knows how to accomplish this. Please help....
  2. I searched this forum trying to find an answer but everything I find that references quick launch icons appear to be for unattended installations. My question is we are going to upgrade our desktops from Office 2000 to Office 2003. On our Ghost images we have Office 2000 and we use Novidigm/HP Radia to distribute our software. We have a script that will remove the Office 2000 quick launch icons, Outlook, Word, Excel 2000 but when Radia uninstalled Office 2000 and installs Office 2003 Professional sp1 there are no quick launch icons. Radia installs under the System context so I'm not sure how I can get the quick launch icons, at least Outlook, Word, Excel 2003. I really hate to create a training video for all the users (2400+) to show them how to manually add these icons. Is there an easier way to either have the user add these icons or through a script when the user logs in to the local user account? We currently are in the planning phase for AD so everything is still all local user profiles, which I know really sucks. Most users are Power Users and this Radia package will deploy Office 2003 Pro sp1 with a local installation point. Any advice or suggestion would be appreciated.
  3. Have you tried using BartPE or WinPE? I have been really successful pulling data from dead drives using BartPE. You also may need to wait several hours when trying stuff on the drive. 250gig drive with a bad cluster/block could take awhile to respond.
  4. Save your money on RIS, we are currently using unattended: http://unattended.sourceforge.net/ We also use Ghost with UIU, http://www.binaryresearch.net/UIU/About.htm for faster re-imaging.
  5. That is not true, we currently run both NetWare and Microsoft. We had to add the Microsoft client on several Windows 2000 PCs (we are in a Novell environment) We used the following command that adds the MS Client: snetcfg -v -l %windir%\inf\netmscli.inf -c c -i MS_MSClient which will activate the Client by default
  6. where can I read Marin Zugec's blog? I tried google and nothing came up
  7. Sounds like you have a piece of software that Faronics already distributes called Deep Freeze Click here
  8. How would I change my network drive letters to be at the beginning instead of at the end, that is how they are currently. ex) D8TA on server1\server\user (H) Change to (H) D8TA on server1\server\user I was able to create a CD with Nlite but now want to change this on my other hosts.

  10. Install VMWare Workstation. I have 2gig too and I keep my host prestine and run virtual machines for any and everything I do.
  11. After I install Windows XPsp2 I want to change the C:\Windows directory to C:\WINNT is there any utility that will change this? How can I change this directory's name? Thanks in advance.
  12. Anyone have any knowledge of good printing software? What I am looking for is software to keep users from printing color. The locations would have a black and white printer and a color printer. There are only certain documents that need to print color and everything else is going to print b&w. So with this software I would like to have everything print b&w with the exceptions of those certain documents. If I print this page out to the color printer I want it to be b&w, obviously if I print to the b&w printer my output would be b&w. I found two vendors OM+ from Plus Technologies and Cypress from ASG. Anyone have any other solutions or use anyone of these to help me decide? I've already tried to remove all the color printers but that didn't fly. The software I was looking at turns a PC into a print server, it needs to be light because someone will be using this PC too.
  13. The company I work for has done some transitioning within the IT department. At one time we had seperate 2nd level support for our Field users, Home office and Communications. They have merged all of these together for one 2nd level support area that everyone will support all the field, communications and home office. We have one person from communications that basically has zero troubleshooting skills and I am wondering if you guys have any recommendations to help get this person up to par. I have already recommended the A+ course, read books and of course this site - msfn.org. This user is used to just monitoring routers and switches and when they went down contact our vendor to fix the problem. Now they need to perform troubleshooting on PC's when the Help Desk will transfer a log to them. What, if any, recommendations do you have to help this user get up to par?
  14. I use bblean It is nice and fast, similar to blackbox.
  15. Does anyone have any good Pros and Cons for Office 2003 Standard vs Office 2003 Professional? I have checked Microsoft's website and obtain some information there but not enough. I am trying to compose a business need to upgrade our Office 2000 standard to Office 2003 Professional but need to review the Office 2003 Standard to compare. I was wondering if anyone else had to do this or has done this that could provide me some documentation on the Pros and Cons of the 2 different Office 2003 installations? Also does anyone know the upgrade price from Office 2003 Standard to Office 2003 Professional? They are thinking about going Standard and then upgrading if need be, but I am a do it right the first time type of person. Basically trying to sell Office 2003 Professional to the higher beings. I have mentioned Information Rights Management and the XML Technologies but they want more details of why Professional is better. Any information that anyone could provide would be helpful for this task.
  16. Banditosway, could you give me an example using the service 'icollectservice' I am looking through the Policies but am not seeing anything that would allow me to specify just certain user(s) can make modification to certain Services.
  17. How would I go about restricting the services within group policy? Your right I am, this would prevent them from doing it again after I have the service started again.
  18. I am not finding anything on the services??? I have looked through all the tabs within Group Policy, where can I find the area for the services? I have utilized the Group Policy for a few items and deployed through Radia. But that is one issue I have is users are Disabling the Radia services so I am unable to deploy these settings. Thus the need for a login script, everyone needs to log into the network.
  19. Under what setting, I am looking through them now. I would still like a command line syntax for use with a login script.
  20. Thanks but I know the net start or sc commands. I keep getting this error message: C:\>sc \\pc11091-vm config icollectservice start=auto [sC] OpenSCManager FAILED 1722: The RPC server is unavailable. The RPC service is started and running am I missing something?
  21. Currently the PCs I manage aren't in a domain environment and that is what I need something from a login script. Hopefully in the near future all these machines will be part of AD. Which takes me back to my original question, how do I re-enable a disable sevice via the command line. I am going to add this to a login script so everytime a user logs in these services will re-enable, if disabled, and restart or start.
  22. Oops, sorry. Windows XP
  23. I noticed I have users who are disabling services. I am trying to figure out how to re-enable a disable sevice via the command line. I am going to add this to a login script so everytime a user logs in these services will re-enable, if disabled, and restart or start.
  24. Google is your friend.... http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default....talling_wmi.asp
  25. I got the subinacl to work and I believe it will do the trick. I am going to try some other settings within the security template but appreciate everyone's comments and tips/tricks. Thanks again!!
