  1. I did a quick search for an answer on this board but didn't find aything. It was a long time ago but someone showed me how to take a file and create an alias for that file but it was done in the registry. I cannot remember for the life of me how to do it again. Basically there was an .exe file, we'll call it open. You could go to Start|Run and key in open and even if open.exe was buried 4 directories deep the open in the run line was enough to launch the application. Am I making any sense? If not I will try to clarify. Found my answer.... A hidden feature in the Windows registry allows you to create program aliases. Allowing you to create, for example, an alias called JBLOGGS.EXE that when executed actually runs another program, e.g. NOTEPAD.EXE Open your registry and find the key below, below it should be a number of sub-keys. To create a new alias create a sub-key, and call it the name of the alias you wish to create (e.g. "JBLOGGS.EXE"). Modify the (default) value of the sub-key to equal the fully qualified path and filename of the application you want to be launched when you execute the alias (e.g. "c:\windows\notepad.exe"). Exit your registry and to test use the Start -> Run command type in the name of your alias (i.e. "JBLOGGS.EXE") and the aliased program should be launched, in this case Notepad.
  2. I guess nobody is investigating Desktop Search tools? I came across another by Coveo which is a spin off of Copernic. I am still wondering about Windows Desktop Search. I like how this desktop search actually replaces the original old Windows search under the Start menu.
  3. I know that the Windows Desktop Search has just been released but I am tasked with trying to figure out which one is better Copernic's Desktop Search or Windows Desktop Search and why. So I am trying to get a feel for anyone who has used Copernic's Desktop Search. One thing I liked when I read about Microsoft's Desktop search is that it's optimized with features that help the enterprise IT manager easily customize, deploy and manage the installation of desktop search across all users and computers in their organization. This Desktop Search will be used in an environment that consists of about 2400 PCs. We are working on getting everyone up and running with Active Directory but currently all the nodes aren't on a domain. All PCs are running Windows XP. Any advice on these two Desktop Search apps would be greatly apprecitated. Thanks!
  4. Well, I am actually trying to share a printer on one desktop to allow it to act as a print server. I was told I needed File and Print Sharing enabled. I looked in the Local Area Connections properties and found it listed just not checked. So I am looking for a way to enable the File and Print Sharing. Thanks for your feedback. I copied that down in case I might need it for future reference.
  5. I am trying to figure out a way to enable File and Print sharing on several remote desktops. I couldn't find a command line to do so and am wondering if anyone knows how I can do this. The File and Print sharing is listed but not checked on our image so I don't know if that will help. These are remote desktops not on a domain running Windows XP.
  6. These are all local accounts. Is there a local GPO for this, if so where can I find it? Our environment isn't on AD but plan to move in that directions in about a year. We have mixed poweruser and administrator. The Power Users cannot disable these services so I am just mainly concerned with the administrators. No, unfortunately the computers aren't on a domain yet. Looking to move towards AD in about a year.
  7. I have a few services that Admin users keep stopping and disabling and I am wondering if any one knows of a way to remove them from the services.msc listing. I realize that if they know the service name they could restart them if they have knowledge how to from the command line. But at least if I make them invisible by removing them from the listing they will have a harder time and maybe give up trying to stop and disable these services. I have been looking into the sc command and maybe mask them by using a different name but I would really like to remove them from the list. Any ideas? I cannot find anything on the web to help me accomplish this.
  8. Here is what we use, http://www.binaryresearch.net/UIU%5CAbout.htm The price was very cheap and basically all you do is create your image run UIU then ghost the image. Then no matter what PC you bring it down on the system is completely functional. We then use HP Radia to deploy the software. It all works like a charm with only 1 image to update and maintain.
  9. Wondering if anyone has knowledge in the real differences between an Intel Pentium 4 chip and an AMD Athlon 64 processor? I've looked on both websites and tried using Google but I cannot figure out the inside workings differences. I know the AMD Athlon 64 is a 64 bit processor but cannot figure out what else really sets these processors apart. Someone said something about the way the processors perform calculations but that really is vague. Can anyone point out or lead me to an article that would assist me in finding the differences. What really sets these processors apart? Any assistance, feedback, etc would be greatly appreciated.
  10. I didn't think it would be that easy but for anyone else this is the command I am using in my script. net user guest /active To disable use: net user guest /active:no
  11. I am working on an installation package and need to enable the guest account on all our field office desktop/notebooks. Is there a command line or reg hack to enable the guest account? All the machines are Windows XP running in a non-domain environment. I plan on sending out an installation CD and during the install I need a way to enable the guest account. Any ideas?? Thanks.
  12. Sorry, we don't plan to build 4000+ PCs. You lost me on this statement, Isn't that what a IT manager should do as well??
  13. Ok, the company I work for is looking at trying to cut costs. We currently have 4000+ desktop and notebook PCs. We also currently use Dell Optiplex series desktops. The question came up regarding the home end models and why or why not try to bring them into the Enterprise. I know one big item is the wake-on-lan feature in the business end PCs. They are looking at the sub $400 dollar models from either Dell, IBM or HP. Obviously, we currently use Dell but I'm not entirely certain of all the pros and cons of moving towards a home end PC for some users. Anyone have any additional pros or cons for an Enterprise this size not to use the home line model PCs? Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated. A lot of "experts" on this board so shoot away. Thanks!
  14. I was also wondering where to find the hack to change explorer folder view to: details. I noticed I can do so with Nlite but I have several other installs and this is a very useful hack. Anyone?? Thanks!
  15. I've used Angry IP scanner, someone recommended this app on this board and it's sweet. Free and you can also obtain hostname, username, etc. You can find it here: http://www.angryziber.com/ipscan I had to download it at home and bring it in because our gatekeeper had blocked this website.
  16. Try to reinstall the MSI Installer Enter command line mode then Attrib the dllcache directory Deleted msi.dll, msiexec.exe msihnd.dll from winnt\system32\dllcache and winnt\system32 Delete the service from HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services called MSIServer Reboot Install the Windows installer
  17. Neither use gosurf http://gosurfbrowser.com/
  18. Is anyone running OpenOffice in their work environment? Anyone have or run into any pros or cons for doing so?
  19. But it doesn't give you the hostname? This would work for the IP address but I also need to hostname for that IP address.
  20. Patchlink http://www.patchlink.com/ Worth every penny
  21. Here is my problem. I have approx 500+ PCs out in the field. I need a batch file, script, something for them to download which would run and read a supplied txt file with either ip address of hostnames of all these PCs. Then once verified send the information back to a common share. Or if I could obtain the ip address and hostname then send the data (ip address and hostname) to a network share or email. I know how to get the ip address and hostname but not exactly sure of the best way to get this information remotely and with no user intervention. Any suggestions or advice?? Thanks
  22. See if this will help. I had a similiar issue with another Office 2003 Pro application and this corrected it for me. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903771
