  1. I am looking for a portable application that will backup my Windows device drivers. I have found some free ones that do the job but I would like to run the program from a USB drive without leaving installation files on the PC I am backing up the device drivers from. Anyone know of such an app?
  2. Any other cards, I hate to limit myself to just one model. I also am looking to attach an antenna.
  3. I am looking for a free or pay, but of course free is better, application that once I create a standard image it will allow me to install applications and take a snapshot of changes to the Windows file system and registry. It would be nice if afterwards I could go back to my standard image I created also. Sort of like VMware does with its snapshot feature but also to let me know of registry and file changes. I've tried googling and other searches on the internet but cannot find anything. Any suggestions?
  4. I am also trying to figure out a way to accomplish this? Did you have any luck?
  5. I am having difficult time getting 7.0.7 slipstreamed in Acrobat standard and pro. I have tried for two days now but once I get it slipstreamed and try to install I get errors saying that certain files are missing. One of the big ones that has appeared was AcroIF.dll. Could someone explain how they did this successfully? I have version 7 CDs and I need to patch to 0.5 then I can patch to 0.7. I really need to get both of these versions, standard and pro up to the 7.0.7 and just about ready to rip all my hair left. Please help!! I need to slipstream both patches so I have an msi install for Acrobat Standard and Pro 7.0.7. I was able to update the Reader without any problems. Thanks!
  6. From a support perspective what are the reasons to get a 1 GB flash drive? I know you can run BartPE off a USB flash drive and backup critical data on a failing drive. I was also thinking you could use a flash drive to test different items that you would place on a CD without making a lot of CD coasters. Place your script or what have you on the flash stick and see what happens. I am looking for reasons to invest in a 1 GB flash stick. Right now I use a 128MB stick instead of a floppy boot disk but does anyone have any other suggestions for the purchase of a 1 GB flash stick?
  7. Stupid question.... You don't need to be logged into the PC to have the scheduled task execute correct? You only need to have the PC on? I have several scheduled task but one requires a reboot and then an hour later the next one starts. I don't need to be logged in as long as I specify a correct username and password for the task to run as correct. I am also going to take a look that schtasks command. Thanks!
  8. I've tried many times but I am still very new to login scripts. We are using Novell NetWare and I cannot seem to get this script to work. I need a NetWare compatible script to uninstall the Google Desktop Search. What am I doing wrong?? Thanks!
  9. I'm looking for a resource to tell my the industry standard on hardware failure. We believe we are experiencing a high level of bad hard drives and motherboards. I was trying to find some information on Gartner's website but came up high and dry. Does anyone have any information, links, websites, documents, etc they could provide that show what the industry standard is for bad hardware? Thanks!
  10. How do I add the uninstall string, C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktopSetup.exe -uninstall to a batch file and make it a login script?
  11. I read about the security vulnerability with Google desktop search and have been asked to create a login script to detect, and uninstall the desktop search from the desktops. All the PCs are Windows XP and we are using Novell NetWare to login to the network. Has anyone created a login script to do this or can someone give me a hand. How do you go about removing unneccessay applications. Unfortunately, we have some users who are administrators of their local machines and we are just currently looking at Active Directory. Hopefully by summer we will have AD implemented. I am really new to login scripts let alone having one execute the uninstall of an application. Thanks!
  12. I use CaRP, http://www.geckotribe.com/rss/carp/ Very easy and does the trick.
  13. I have been working on this for several days now and still cannot get it to work. I have several admin users and tons of Power Users and I need to give them the ability to defrag their disk drives. Unfortunately these PCs are not in an AD environment but all are Windows XP. Anyone found a way to do this? I just want the users to have the ability to defrag their disk drives.
  14. Thanks! I don't think this will work because the accounts are different for each notebook. Is there a way to poll the logged in user and run this exe file? I cannot rely on the user to run this file.
  15. Is there a way to uncheck the password never expires checkbox under a user account? I have several field agents and when the image was created the check box was checked. Now I am trying to enforce some security and have the password expire but cannot get the check box unchecked. I tried using RegShot to see what registry keys were modified but that doesn't seem to work either because it was the security key which is unique to each user. Has anyone accomplished how to do this and could you shed some light on the matter for me. I will need to deploy this via CD to the users but don't know what else to try or do to remove the check box and start having the passwords expire. Thanks!
  16. I am in the process of deploying Office 2003 Pro to our Enterprise. One concern is Access 2003. We have a lot of databases in Access 97 and 2000 format. Is there a way to deploy the entire CD image but make Access not visible in the Start|Programs|Microsoft Office menu? I could just remove it using the CIW but some users will need this version. What is the best way to deploy the full Office 2003 Pro including InfoPath, Publisher and Access yet only allow those users who need Access 2003 to access it? We are also in the sloooow process of moving to an Active Directory domain but this will not happen by the time Office 2003 Pro is deployed. How has anyone else deployed Office 2003 Pro limiting Access 2003? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
  17. I've seen a program that will allow any user to run a defrag on their local disk but now I cannot find it. This was a freebe that created a service in Windows which allowed Power Users to defrag their disk. As of now majority of our users are only Power Users and are unable to perform a simple defrag. Does anyone have any ideas on how I could either push out a scheduled task to defrag the drives at will on any given night or allow the Power Users to defrag the drive themselves? I am still Googling trying to find that service that allows Power Users to defrag but any help at this point would be greatly appreciated. These PCs are in a corporate environment no connected to any domain. Thanks! Title Edited - Please follow new posting rules from now on. --Zxian
  18. My ghost image is larger than one CD so I have place the other image on another CD for a total of 2. The CD boots fine and ghost launches but when ghost gets finished with the first image on the CD it doesn't ask me to put in the other CD but rather just tells me user aborted and brings me to a C> prompt. What command do I need so ghost will prompt be for the other spanned image which is on the 2nd CD?
  19. You need to disable ISO9660 file versions, in Nero you need to do a registry setting: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ahead\Nero - Burning Rom\General\AddISOFileVersion Set the value to 0 (zero). Newer version of Nero have an option in the "ISO" page, Relax ISO Restictions, Enable "Do not add ';1' ISO file version extensions.
  20. I am wondering what some of the pros and cons of each would be? We currently are using a Novell queue based printing but we are looking at IP based printing and wondering what the pros and cons would be. We have approximately 300 printers with about 2400 nodes. Is IP based printing the way to go or should we just stick with out Novell queues. Some of the pros we already have come up with is No server needed Queues don't need to be rebuilt after server upgrades Bidirectional communications with the printer/device Better path for technology advancement Troubleshooting simplification Mitigate printing failure risk Reduction of network connections Elimination of the IPX protocol Cons were No server spooling Workstation spooling Any additional feedback would be appreciated.
  21. I have successfully deployed XP service pack 2 and prior to deploying the service pack I've created the exceptions needed. My problem now is trying to add addtional exceptions. We don't have a domain environment and this will be used for several of our field offices in which they will add these exceptions via a CD that is shipped to them. Is there an easy way to add these exceptions to the Windows Firewall? There are two ports needed allowed and one application, .exe file. These users don't have administrator rights so I'll need to elevate the priviledges prior to adding the exceptions if needed, which I am guessing would be needed. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  22. I browsed this site to find information to remove the Log Off from the Start menu but I am now looking for a way to remove the Stand by. All I want my user to see when they goto Start|Shut down is Shut Down and restart. Any ideas? This is a non-domain environment so if you know of a reg hack that will do this like the Log Off that would be the best option. All machines are Windows XP Pro.
