  1. Why w98? Because it's faster than 2000 and XP. 'nuf said. For even more reasons see LLMX replies.
  2. 1/ Unofficial Service Pack2.02 (for w98) and Safe Xp (for Xp) 2/ This is a selection of the folders in my "program files" (not a 1 to 10 rating). Almost all are freeware and work perfectly. * = Payware or Payservicewares that I remember of. 1by1 SlowView (Brennigs) ScanSoft Omnipage OCR WinZip (w98) Nero Yahoo!Messenger (maybe msn messenger too) BadCopy * CodeStuffStarter ffdshow PCPhone * Clickatell Messenger-PRO 3 * DivX5.11 or 5.2 AviUtl VirtualDub hilaunch Audacity QuadSucker Microsoft Office XP * WildRename CDex_150 SequoiaView PhotoFiltre AntiVirPers BSPlayer Total Uninstall IrfanView DBXtract RegSeeker Wall Street Analyzer IconArt Download Express GSpot Foxit Maxthon Xplorer2_lite NotepadPP Spybot Lavasoft Adaware Iconize Contextedit DVD Shrink 3/ see my signature Sorry to be slightly over 10... but I realy can't make a rating since they are all great!
  3. If this was spam, markavon wouldn't spend time replying here. If you consider the time that a simple software can take, he will have more than enough work with 3 project. I think some are asking for too advanced software, like this Auto GKnot thing (unless the guy is an expert in audio and video encoding he won't be able to do it), and that Mark expected things like "Mom's birthday reminder" or a "dog hair loss calculator" and such things. Myself I posted a project that is not obvious.
  4. Try using ShortName for your path(s).
  5. Maybe we should post it in the "unofficial pack" forum?
  6. It's trange we don't hear more about that topic here. But the task of making w98 compatible with XP-only apps is immense: 1/ you will have to prevent installers from detecting w98. most installers would abort if they know you are using w98. But this alone should allow (IMO) 75% of so-called XP-onlie's to run on w98. 2/ add .NET framework and the likes 3/ add libraries or replace them by thos used in XP. that may cause w98 versions not to run and app not able to run on XP won't run neither. The best would be to add libraries without deleting the old ones or if impossible creating recompiled libraries but that's nearly impossible without the source. 4/ transplant all the files that can be possibly used by the app, maybe by testing and reading error message like "xyz.dll is missing".
  7. MGDx, I'v got a new BSOD! And it's such an incredible event on w98se-uSP2.02 that each instance of it is worth being mentioned here. It happened only once, while surfing the web, suddenly poof! And it happened I think, when the connection was shut-off momentarily. But I didn't kill the process this time. I don't know if it's related because I installed a new adsl modem since. But this patch seems to be the only thing that is capable of doing a BSOD on my computer. Maybe nothing serious. I will see if it happends again.
  8. Yes, that's very good piece of software. I ran it after installing and running Safe XP. XPY is doing some of the same things as Safe XP but not all, and some of the things that Safe XP doesn't. After that, with some high security/tweaking level on both Safe Xp and XPY, the PC started to boot up very slowly and shut down slowly too. I don't know at this stage if it's caused by some sort of bad cohabitation between Safe Xp and XPY or by XPY alone. Also, if you know womething about booting time, what are the settings that could cause long boot time? I noticed I had some unconcistnacies between XPY settings and what the OS allowed to do. For example WHS didn't work while XPY and Safe XP showed it was enabled. Thought in Safe XP it's phrased differently. The two programs can be run on the same machine, because as whole the PC works without problem, but doing so requires caution.
  9. Thanks MGDx. I hope eveything's all right then. I will re-intialize the "service" executable. BTW are you also testing this patch?
  10. The goal is not the re-invent the wheel but to have several windows/dos compatible OS'es concurencing each others. Mac and Linux don't realy make concurence to M$ because those who would turn to Mac or Linux would have not only give up windows, but all the softwares they used so far, (except for the rare case when a version exists for these OS'es). Only alternative windows compatible OS'es can make a serious concurence to M$. And it's good for M$ because it force them to constantly improve their product. (note the singular) To do that, there are two ways: 1/reinventing the wheel: Those who tried that, except Linus, never went very far. You can read on their website that soon the new version will support e-mail client. Last update: dec. 2002. How encouraging... 2/changing what's already there: new component for existing windows OS. Until now, only M$ has been done that to critical w98 parts. Proof that such process is paradoxaly positive for M$. First it set the long term value of their product(s ?). Poeple know that in seven years, there are chances that there will still be updates for the OS they buy today. Second it's R&D. Doing that they may find new ideas for something new. Aleternative Windows also revelates the demand of some M$ potentialy renewed clients. The need for something else than mainstream XP. We are all here, at the "Unofficial Win98 SE Service Pack" forum because we want an OS the way we want it and not the way it was forced upon us.
  11. jlo555, I also don't like XP's GUI and that's one of the main reason I still use w98+++. My last clean-instal wass at least one and half year ago..
  12. eidenk, I know for sure that M$ has started open)sourcing some of their code. TBS, I don't know if it involves W98 parts or only periferic softwares.
  13. P4, 1800 Mhz 512 DDR Asus V8200T2deLuxe with GeForce3Ti200 - 64Mb 120 Gb + 40Gb HD's P4S5A motherboard with intergrated sound secondary sound card: Creative Life Modem 56K (soon adding adsl and a network card) floppy CD-R 56X - Teac CD-RW 56X - Teac USB2.0
  14. Eidenk, Developers who would want to replace a component that is not open-sourced by M$, will have to start from scratch. If it's open source, they can use the existing code and improve it. And the result code of a modified open source, is bound by agreement to be open source too. Of course it doesn't means it's freely distributable but I still don't know of a unofficial service pack that was payware. I think that when program become open source, the owner almost always specify that recompiled versions cannot be sold. That means they must be freely distributed unless of course, they reach an agreement with the owner for some commercial exploitation.
  15. MGDx, I have something to say: A few times already, I noticed abnormal datas transfert (on a 56k modem I see that easily), I mean data being sent or received while I'm not dowloading anything. If at this time I shut down the connection (which I always do in this case), I get the internet connection dialog looping again and again until I reconnect. I checked my my processes and noticed that KB891711.exe was running. Killing this task BSOD'ed my PC. Now I disabled KB891711.exe from the start-up. What do you think?
  16. My hat off for the boot logo but the style is realy too oldish This theme is better: click here
  17. I installed Sfae XP then xpy because it disabled even more stuffs but now I have some issues and would like to revert to prior xpy. I did, in xpy, "no settings" but some problems persist. The bigest problem now is that Windows Script Host is disabled althought it not supposed to... please help!
  18. Timeless, Is it included in the last unofficial pack?
  19. MGDx, I have tried without the kernel patch during two days, and it worked fine. Now I did the patch and it's still fine.
  20. Rhelic, You misunderstood his goal. It's not about using open source for the sake of sport. If someone wants to write, let's say a replacement dll for w98 (the Graahl beeing rewriting the kernel) let's put his creation in the compilation, easily available for everyone, all the new stuffs in one place! Some w98 files are open sources, others are not, but it's not forbidden to write repacements for the original ones. Doing so will avoid having hacks of hacks on the limits of legality. (Now, in the packs available here we are limited to files officialy issued by M$.) Little by little, maybe in 20 years we will have a w98 open source, written by passionate geeks at 90%...
  21. uSP2 firste, then win2Me if you have a ME disc. Revolution pack is for giving a new look to your windows. Read the stickies on top of the forum.
  22. Please somebody explain me why some softwares are ten times bigger than other ones for similar activities. Often commercial softwares are 10x bigger than their freeware alternatives. While commercialwares usualy do more than their free concurents, it doesn't justify such disproportionate difference in the file size. I don't understand that since it seems to me that it takes more time to write 20 Mb than 2. Or is it that developers for commercial companies must work fast and copy-paste packs of codes toghether, no matter how manyfold redundant they are? While freewares are written within the state of the art of efficient programming?

  24. I just rebooted from the installation of your patch and so far everything seems to be alright. CPU usage slightly up afew moments, but I don't know if it's related. Do you recommand to install the 98KRNLUP.EXE after this patch too?
  25. My worste nightmare is when I have to leave the console
