Maybe I will say somehting stupid but if you try to move a 4Gb file with w98, you are in for a long wait IMHO.
-
So you are realy in trouble here. Maybe your computer doesn't like dual OS? Maybe your hard drive is very fragmented but I supposed you already did a defrag... Maybe you coputer is not fast enough? But then that should be visible on w2000 as well... Maybe you have a driver installed for w2000 that doesn't suit for w98...? Realy I don't know...

Windows 98/ME support for hardware and software
Fredledingue replied to Link21's topic in Software Hangout
Link21, Miko explained more in details and better than me why it makes no difference if a software is w98 compatible or not. In fact programs rarely need or even make use of the XP "architecture". So, You realy shouldn't worry about that. In the case your goal is only ranting against w98, this thread will be locked soon because such topic is not appreciated by the moderators of this site. -
Nerd98, The most important update is IMO uSP2.02 (other are crazy about 98toMe but I don't know about this one because I don't have ME installation cd). Among the many Option and Revolution packs poping up over here, uSP2 is the one to go first. This alone will change your life. Just for safety, I recommand, keeping a copy on CD of the updates and drivers you downloaded, and make a backup of all important files from your computer before starting and also to prepare a boot floppy disc. This just in case. I the very worse scenario, you will want to re-install windows to the original version with the cd but not reformat your HD (I think). In some extremely bad case you will have to do it from the boot floppy disc, but let's not faint, surrender or panic: Normaly there is no problem with uSP2.02 comparing the number of downloads and the number of complains, it's maybe 1/10000 of the case! I ran uSP2 on a very old and possibly damaged install (I do lot of experimenting on my machine) and it worked fine (I had issues with previous version but these issues has been fixed) Today, I wouldn't imagine working on w98 without uSP2! After that you can look for the other cool stuffs around here...

Thanks PsycoUnc, that's exactly how I feel and how everybody here fells. I posted this to point out that such problem is highly exceptional since I installed sp2. It didn't happend anymore. I had some freezing up also when trying to copy the tracks of a damaged audio-cd with CDex, but I think the software was working very very slowly rather than properly crashing.

Phaneendra Rao Try to spot the dll the error message talk about, and other file you CDTV is using. Copy them to another folder or in a zip file. reinstall sp2.02, re-paste this or these files where they were, replacing the new ones. Before doing that check the size and versions in the file properties of the old and the new files, for comparison.

Test if you have the same problem moving your files using Winfile. You will find it in C:\WINDOWS\WINFILE.EXE or just clic "start" "run" and type "winfile". If this improve the file transfer, I will recommand an alternative file manager such as Xplorer2.

Thanks MDGx, I used to be "DivX trusted Wise Man" but now, I'm a little bit out of touch. Isn't it more simple to copy the DivX6 files from a XP computer, paste them in w98's windows/system and register them? Do we need absolutely these Divxdec.ax and divxmedia.ax or is only for playing in WMP? Also do you think it's safe to use DivX6 or that it will also encode on w98? I have doubts. I have good results with DivX5.11 but I will have a look at the last version of the DivX5 serie while they are still available.

Unless nlite is realy making dramatic changes (I don't know because I didn't use it so I let the option open), IMO with 128MB of memory, W98SE-uSP2 is by far the best solution. You will also enjoy the full performance of your P4. Check the Maximus Decim in the w98 forum for unversal USB device compatibility...

If it's freeware, I don't see any problem with it. I think it's good to share your creations with others for free. Myself I put a link to my scriptwares. Why not? If it was for commercialware, it would a different thing.

Windows 98/ME support for hardware and software
Fredledingue replied to Link21's topic in Software Hangout
link21 XP will be slower than w98 on any computer. My computer is perfectly capable of running XP and I kept w98 because of performance, better interface and other things. It wasn't even a question of money.I tested both XP and w98, both freshly installed, both on the same new computer and XP was 30% slower. And from my further experience all the XP computers even with more recent hardware couldn't react as fast as my w98 machine. Wrong bet. With the uSP2 my system is rock-stable. I often let him do automated operations of several kinds over the night, no problem. I rebooted maybe two or three times in the last 4 months and I'm sure that if I used XP as much I would have to reboot as many times because I have seen XP crashing too. But you seem to completely ignore what uSP2 is and if you keep intentionaly ignoring it, I will intentionaly ignore SP1, SP2, SafeXP, the recent anti-virus add-on and all the tweak you can do (that you must do, to be exact) on XP for increasing performance. Ok? You have no f*cking clue about that.As I say before EVERY new SOFTWARE in the world are designed on XP platform by programmers who are XP users and are required to work on XP and test their softwares on XP. So their softwares are fully optimized for XP and there is no link whatsoever between new softwares and w98. There is not a single programmer in the world, who will drop an XP file he may use in his program, just to make a signle exe file for all versions of Windows. It occures that most of softwares designed on XP for XP also work very well on w98 and/or that it takes minor changes to make it w98 compatible AFTER the XP version is done. I already said that above but you don't seem to be willing to read arguments. So, if I understand you, if a game or a softwares is compatible with w98, it should detect the user's OS and block itself if this OS is w98? You are crazy! -
If you capture to avi and encode to compressed avi (DivX) I recommend http://www.geocities.com/fredledingo/aviutl.htm If you want to wrok with dvd-compatible formats please visit http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/guides.htm

Windows 98/ME support for hardware and software
Fredledingue replied to Link21's topic in Software Hangout
With the last Unofficial Service Pack 2.02, you can officialy go up to one Gig of memory. The problem is that XP fans ignore the w98 updates (most of them even never used w98SE and remember the bad days of the forst version). It's like if we, w98 fans, ignored XP SP1 and SP2! Now it's funny that XP, supposed to be faster because it has direct 32 bit code "emulation" (or whatever you call it) is in fact running slowlier than w98...that is 15 years-old- 16 bit DOS based... How is that? Would XP be slightly bloated by any chance? -
Maybe two RAM bars of different brand. That can also cause conflicts.

WSH - non modal dialog box
Fredledingue replied to tomikaaa's topic in Programming (C++, Delphi, VB/VBS, CMD/batch, etc.)
two ways: 1/ create a script file called "messagebox.vbs" with the code: msgbox "YourMessage",,"YourTitle" Then launch it using the wshell.run method 2/ if the message is always changing: use a code in your script to CreateTextFile named "box.vbs" and to write the MsgBox line into it and to launch the "box.vbs" file with the same wshell.run method . Then add a code to delete the "box.vbs" file if you don't need it anymore. http://visualbasicscript.com/m_24654/tm.htm -
Surfing gets slower and slower until ... ! Help!
Fredledingue replied to Dr. Mac's topic in Windows 9x/ME
1/ Try using another browser: Maxthon (IE based) or Firefox (non IE) 2/ If you have two hard drives put the temporary internet files folder in drive C (do it in IE options). 3/ Add more RAM memory to your computer. It would be interresting to know your hardware. With w98se SP2.02, you can go up to 1Gb. 4/ Update yor MS-Office version (just a thought) -
Is Win98SE more secure by default than XP?
Fredledingue replied to iWindoze's topic in Windows 9x/ME
From the two computers that we have at home, the XP one has always more viruses than the w98. The last one was a porn popup when we opened IE. Now I have installed Maxthon, and do regular ipdates with anti-spyware-viruses. Somethign I don't do that often with the w98 computer. However I strongly recommand the unoficial SP2 for w98 since it solve many crash and freez-up problems. I wouldn't even contemplate using w98-first edition (non SE). But that's not what I call a security issue, rather a stbility issue. By default and as internet/netwark intrusions is concerned XP is less safe than w98. As I said on the other thread, not only all viruses are being written for XP now but on XP and NT there are VBScript functions (language of choice for viruses) that won't work on w98. This alone make me feel safer. -
First tell us what codecs it is. Second be aware that DivX6 is not compatible with w98 while it's compatible with w2000 or XP. The same may be valid with drivers: one version for XP the other for w98. So try to have different codecs in use for each OS. I strongly recommand FFDSHOW to play divx, xvid and other encoded videos. http://cutka.szm.sk/ffdshow/ or http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow/

Exactely. Even better you can write a batch file that delete the few undesirable files your antivirus/antispyware frequently detects on your system and put this batch file in the start up menu folder. Your self-written antivirus if you wat. This the one I wrote for myself but I guess you could add hundreds of entries and still won't seee any change in start up time. copy-past it in notepad and save it as deletevirus.bat Here it's deleting the foder created by Gain... @echo off CD \Progra~1\Common~1 deltree /y GMT deltree /y Cmeii exit

Windows 98/ME support for hardware and software
Fredledingue replied to Link21's topic in Software Hangout
link21, Drivers are or should small programs, possible simple that sould be easily translatable for various OSes. I assume softwares are now written by developers using XP machines and are first testing on XP for obvious reasons so it's rather the w98 users who may suffer from low performance because the software is designed for XP. I also never heard of XP offering better performance for programs AFAIK. I mean I don't think a program designed especialy for XP and for higest performance on XP will work faster than a program designed for higher performance on w98. I even don't think it's possble to make programs that work faster on XP than on w98. I think it depends on the programing language and programmer skill. Good softwares must be small and should never crash even on w95. Once you have that, it should rock on XP as well. But I'm not an expert in programing. Just my 2ct. -
Windows 98/ME support for hardware and software
Fredledingue replied to Link21's topic in Software Hangout
"Application and game performance probably suffers a lot because of continued support for POS Windows 98/ME " Why? If they issue two versions of the same sofftware/driver, one for XP one for 98, there is no interaction. And in the case of a single version, I think there is still enough compatibility netween both OS to have no loss of performance. Well many drivers and almost every softwares are XP and 98 compatible in a same version, so I think it's not difficult to support 98 a few years more. Maybe it's a bit more dificult with drivers. the reasons why I prefer w98 over XP has been explained on three multipage threads now blocked. (looks like this topic is taboo here) But in a few words: I hate XP for its slowliness, its interface, and for the sake of the art of computering: its bloat. w98 was crappy 7 years ago, but after the SE version and today with uSP2.02 and other tweaks, it's realy a great OS. TBS, The next time I'll buy a computer, I'll choose only hardware with w98 support. -
Standalone applications site hit 4000 hits, thank
Fredledingue replied to albator's topic in Software Hangout
Your reasons are very good. It's true that vbs are not stand alone because they depend on WHS and other things. While my scripts should work on most windows platforms, I stumble on code sample that don't work on my w98se everyday....and it would take dozen of Mb of download to upgrade...
