  1. I'm currently working on a hta/vbs script to browse one's own personal program compilation/collection. Are you interrested?
  2. Sorry for the off-topic, but... it's so incredible that I couldn't help it! Vista forum When I think that some poeple here are still trying to slim down w98... some succeeding in running windows on 20 Mb...
  3. ho, my... and me who thought that XP was bloated... No wonder that Bill Gate and other top M$ execs are leaving the company... Enough is enough.
  4. I couldn't find a way or even a workaround for maximizing VBScriptably all windows. It may work using third party autoitx3.dll, but I'm even not sure... Looks like w98 OS has been build, from the very start, around the impossibility to do that in VBS. The only softwares that do that are payware and i'm ready to bet money that they don't work properly to maximize all windows...
  5. Known bug: Sometimes it will list something like that: ------------------ ADDED 3: To directory of C:\Program Files\Disk Investigator\ Volume in drive C has no label ------------------ I will investigate if this a serious problem or just an entry to be ignored. IMO it can be simply ignored... Note: The number following "Added" or "Missing" has no meaning and is there for debugging purpose. I'm planning newer versions, hopefully as fast and more reliable, but I need time... Advice: run this script often if you don't want to be overwhelmed by the amount of changes it's finding everytime!
  6. brian That's what I'm trying to say to Link21... Lot of poeple last tried w98 (FE) 4 years ago, when there was no uSP, no official MS patch, no update and MDGx website was barely a shadow of what it is now. And also hardware was weaker so the common impression is that w98 crashes every 5 minutes: This is not true anymore except of course when you have specific hardware or software uncompatibilities. But that has always been the case and Linux and other free OSes are not void of poor soft/hardware compatibility issue. TBS w98SE++ still crashes occasionaly even on modern system, especialy old, corrupted and broken instals, but never to the point of nightmare. XP also has its problem of its own. Just glance at the XP forum...LOL
  7. The BEST fix is to use an alternative file manager: For example the free version of explorer² That fix all of a sudden all the issues you may have with the widely incomplete and buggy Explorer. Here are ohter example (sorry no link, just the exe) abclt33-setup.exe 589.824 bytes Simple, facile mais montre toujours deux paneaux et a un "tree" séparé dans une petite fenêtre. Copie nom et chemin dans le clipboard. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- fileant.exe 1.976.712 bytes Pas mal mais lent et ne retient pas le dernier dossier ouvert. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- gxexplorer0994.zip 1.099.007 bytes Pas très rapide et crash si il doit faire trop the thumbnails. Avantage: pas d'installation. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- filecomander_2005-09a_setup.exe 1.635.024 bytes Bon programme mais montre toujours deux paneaux. Au moin on peu en cacher un. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- dfileman101.zip 215.488 bytes A basic file manager. Its very minimalistic, and has a few UI enhancements over explorer. Its pretty light weight too. Not much clutter in the UI if any. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Explorer_patch.zip 74.427 bytes
  8. IMO the most dangerous sites are those that require IE6+ to be viewed. So if you switch temporarily to IE6 for some sites you'r screwed. If you don't you won't be able to watch many sites you like... But very interresting point indeed.
  9. Link21, It's interresting to see that with cars, the same phenomenon appeared as with M$ Oses. I don't know to which brand and model I could compare w98 or XP, so let's just call the w98 car (which was build 10 years ago) and the XP car that is new. The w98 car is an old car, build on technologies of the 80's and early 90's. This car use to breaking down very often and needed constant restart but it's easy to repair yourself. Take a screwdriver and after 5 minutes you go. It's speedy, it has a nice roaring sound, fast accelaration, and for a sport car, consume very little gas! By the time, we replaced a lot of parts from the engine and it's much more reliable now. We did some tuning, repainted with pearled grey color to make it look more modern, added new alu wheels, new seats etc Now it looks great! You can do almost what you want thanks to interchangeability of parts; change the engine to put a stronger one, put a tank with more capacity etc What's nice is that as an old car, nobody wants to steal it and it's difficult to steal anyway if you don't have the keys. The XP car is a new car, build on the most recent albeit not that recent technologies. It can ride huge mileages without any problem and almost never breakdown. But when it does, parts cost a lot of money. The engine is huge and heavy and when you open the hood, it's almost impossible to do anything yourself: you need special tools and a most importantly, a computer because it's full of electronic inside! So because you don't know what to do and if you do something the engine doesn't start anymore, you just go to the car service of the official dealer. (Mecanics working XP car must be licensed from M$-motor inc and must call the company for permission to replace parts.) It burns a lot of gas so you need a big gas tank. It's slow and because it's automatic, you can't make it drive much faster by changing gear yourself like on w98 car. The interior is quiet luxurious, which is nice. They said, this car include all the newest electronic appliances but the autoradio and GPS works just as fine on w98 car: You just have to buy them separately. The problem with the XP car is the combined remote control for the doors and the autoradio: thieves just have to have another remote controler on the same frequency and they can take your car, switch off the alarm and go! That's because of the extensive electronic integration. XP car owners must go to the XP car service every week to replace these electronic components and add expensive extra alarm and autoblocking system. Vista is a limo. It's so long and slow and gas consuming that you can barely drive with it. The guy with the DOS bike, goes even faster in narrow streets! Mac car is ver good and very confortable to drive with but it uses a special type of gas that very few station provide so most of poeple use the M$-motor car. Linux car is a nice and ecological alternative but you have to learn the new driving habits of the electric car!
  10. Cruzer flasf drive works perfectly with w98SE.
  11. DXN (DivX) did exactly that. When saying require XP/2000 they also make sure you run their program on a relatively recent machine.
  12. Your anwser is here: MDGx's msnf forum thread as he says: HTH
  13. Biran, i'v read of somebody else who also had issue with wireless ntwk card on laptop an w98. Nothing is perfect...
  14. What I can say is that everytime there is an update, my PC worked fine before AND after the update.... so why worrying if you miss one or two "critical" (LOL) updates...Huh?
  15. Brian, Thanks for your civil reply. I also respect those who like XP by choice.(except Link21 ) As I said above, drivers for recent hardware are better suited for XP because that's the OS almost everybody use on new computers. That's why w98 perform poorly and crashes on your laptop. Had Dell developed good w98 drivers for your Inspiron, w98 would work very well too. But they won't do that for the 2 or 3 geeks who would want to run w98 in 2006... The XP installation disc that come with your laptop is also a version build especialy for this laptop (while you used a generic w98 version I imagine). If you tried a regular out of the shelve XP version, i'm sure you would run into serious issues too, such as driver installation, albeit not the same issue as with w98. You said:"windows 98 was a good OS for when it came out". I disagree: w98 first edition was full of bugs and too unstable. w98se was already much better but still not good. Paradoxaly, it was only about one or two years ago that w98 became a good OS, IMO. Thanks to the multiple updates and enhancements, officials and unofficials. M$ released 5 new and last updates for w98 a few days ago. One has to take that into account when comparing it to XP. A w98 build of 2006 has little to do with what it looked like by 1998. I say that only to provide information because most of those who criticize w98, last used it 5 years ago or use it on machine dating from the last century. I'm not saying that I "hate" XP so bad that I can't use it. Using it is not much different than using w98 after all.
  16. Brian, New games, applications and drivers are designed exclusively to work with XP/2000 and sometimes they manage a w98 or cross platform compatible version that of course perform worse but they don't care because that's only 1% of their users. That's especialy true with laptop that have practicaly, build-in XP OSes. w98se++ is quiet stable. Actualy my current system is not and freeze from time to time, but one month ago it's been broke for some reasons that would have crashed XP too,and still running anyway. I'm still doing lots of experiments and software testing on it. I mean with all the update, if you want to crash w98, it means that you realy mean it. I know of at least one instance of an XP PC being completely out of use because of a file corruption. Never heppened with w98. So XP is not the stable-for-ever OS that some pretend it be. Xp is slow, it takes ages to boot and even longer to shut down. That's anothe reason why I think it's a bad OS.
  17. So why is Dependancy Walker 2.1 showing that the dll's installed on my PC needs them? What do you think (choose one)? *It could be a good idea to add them *It will have no effect whatsoever because they are XP dll *It could destabilize or slow down your system. *other
  18. Thanks miko, I think I will survive by leting it black But if it's black and if it depends on the color pallette, that means it's the position on the tablet where the black is. No?
  19. Version 2.0 released today! It's an important update. The comparison engine has been entirely rewritten. Prior versions had errors (fake reports of file missing or added). I worked a lot on this very complicated script so I hope it's finaly working within some pallatable level of reliability!
  20. Out of curiosity, I checked with a dependency checker a few exe and it showed that all these dll were not found. netrap.dll dnsapi.dll netui0.dll netui1.dll w32topl.dll samlib.dll authz.dll ntdsapi.dll ntlanman.dll apphelp.dll userenv.dll I downloaded them, put them in windows\system and the depency checker doesn't show any missing dll. Tought It still shows unavailable module or libraries. But do I realy need them in w98? And do I need to register them?
  21. W98 is not "superior" to XP but in some way it's "better" than XP. "Better" depends on the point of view: What is better? An OS that is stable or an OS that is virus/hacker safe? A good quality Kernel, or a PC the way you like it? A 2 Gb install or a 350 Mb install? But XP is is maybe the worse disapointment, if not the worse OS, because it was supposed to be the perfect OS, that fixed all the 9x problems, have better interface etc... Instead they just made a POS, a stable one. Vista will be a joke too, you will see. I'm sure there are already countless viruses for Vista already out. Linux? Good luck! It's ok for e-mail and text editing on Open Office, beyond that, as soon as you need a special program, a special driver or a specific task, you end up dual boot with windows anyway.
  22. Update maniac!
  23. I actualy did a bitmap converted to a 16 color pallette bmp using Photofiltre. Can you better explain how to change the tail color? Isn't it the last color on the upper side of tthe picture?
  24. Dead Light Eye I advice downloading the german version of the unofficial service pack for w98se (sorry I don't know the link, do a search). Or wait for the mulitlingual release of the power pack. nowshining AFAIk, ISO file are only for buring on CD, then you install from the CD. So in fact you need a CD-w drive...
