  1. I dont plan to use large apps. The main apps I'll be using are Media Player Classic (uses 3Mb ram) and Firefox. I'm not sure how much ram that uses but there's a 3rd party tweaked and optimized version of firefox around thats been designed for people running windows from a memory stick. By the way, I've since got my memory usage from 30Mb down to 21.1Mb and I'm still not finished. Maybe I could hit 20Mb. Then if I use that tweaked version of winlogon which is supposed to save you about 600Kb, I'll be using even less memory. Then I could think about using a higher compression on some of the larger dlls. I even tried using the NT4.0 Shell by copying across explorer.exe and shell32.dll and tweaking the registry but it didn't seem to make any difference to the memory usage. I know it was running the NT4.0 shell because I had the NT4.0 startmenu and control panel etc.
  2. YaBB is a good forum. It would be a good idea to set up XAMP which will give you MySQL, PHP and Apache plus many more cool things. Great for setting up forums and lots of other cool feature and making sure they work properly before uploading to your personal webspace.
  3. I find this always works for destroying data
  4. I only smoke when I get really depressed. Ive had about 12 cigarettes since christmas.
  5. Where I work we have about 160 computers split over 6 sites with 2 technicians. We have to drive from site to site to fix problems.
  6. If you boot XP Home in Safe Mode the security tabs appears. This should help you out.
  7. You could try Foxit Reader instead. Its fully compatible with PDF files and its a self contained exe that you just run without having to install, I love it. Its only 2.46Mb and it loads instantly.
  8. if azagahl was a Microsoft Beta Tester for Longhorn, I'm sure he would already be using it. But like me, he probably wouldn't use it anyway.
  9. 2000 Pro. A Server OS is best used as a Server OS. I'm sure all those 2003 into a workstation purists will disagree with me though saying it has better memory management and whatever else they do it for.
  10. I use PHPDesigner for building websites (supports HTML as well). Its great because it numbers each line for you and highlights the TAGS and stuff. I'm not that good at HTML and have trouble remembering all the commands so I use Frontpage to do try stuff and check how it was coded. But I dont use Frontpage to do my actual webpages becuase of all the extra crap that gets put in. I also like using the pipette in frontpage for getting HEX codes for colors I like the look of on websites etc.
  11. at this point in time, Intel has the fastest 32-bit processors. AMD has the fastest 64-bit processors. Intel has had the fastest processors since they increased the FSB of the P4 to 533 but only just. The difference was marginal. When they released the 800 FSB, Intel owned! Before that, AMD was king of the speed stakes ever since they released the original Athlon. Up until then Intel was always the fastest, although, AMDs equivelent to the original Pentium which was the AMD K5 I believe was faster than the Pentium.
  12. I'm not sure what your asking. You say that "if one pc try to view other folder he should inter password to enter" do you want to change this so you dont need to enter the password? If so, all you need to do is go onto the computer with the shared folder and create user accounts for the other computers. Give this shared folder permissions for the accounts you've just created.
  13. try and delete the partition if you can and re-partion it using manage.
  14. We're using Netpilot boxes for connectivity. They don’t offer much in the way of traffic analysis or anything. When I said I narrowed it down, I just meant the computers as a whole as opposed to any of the servers. I haven’t got a clue which computer(s) are causing it.
  15. I’m looking after a network with 5 windows 2000 servers and about 60 workstations. We are connected to 5 much smaller sites through VPN. Our ADSL line is 256K/2000K up/down, which isn’t enough I know but we are going to upgrade it to SDSL 2000k/2000k up/down. The problem is that sometimes the internet and VPN slows down to crawl. Sometimes it goes as high as 5000ms. Normally it’s around 40ms so there’s a problem somewhere, which I haven’t yet been able to determine. I did get somewhere last week when I noticed the exchange sever had a lot of traffic running through it, which slowed the VPN and internet down. Upon nonchalantly unplugging exchange from the network during a quick off the cuff experiment, the speed shot up from 4000ms to a much happier 35ms. After studying the windows 2000 network monitor, I soon realized that the slowdown occurred each time the marketing department sent an email with a very large attachment out to the local press. The exchange server has two network cards so I plugged the second network card into a completely separate DLS line and configured exchange so that outward-bound SMTP mail would get sent through the other line, which fixed the problem. Now however, the problem is back, and this time its got nothing to do with exchange. After process of elimination, I’ve determined that the traffic is coming from one or more workstations in the network. I’m thinking that somebody may be doing large unauthorized downloads for personal use or watching/listening to streaming media or maybe even p2p. Not only is it slow, but we frequently get packet loss. Even when I ping using a 30 second wait, it times out. But then after a while, everything goes back to normal and stays below 100ms. At first, we thought that the problem might be down to replication between the servers through the VPN. That’s not the case because I manually set the times of replication through the VPN and our internet slows down regardless of replication taking place or not. Can anybody advise me on what to do or recommend a piece of software that can look at network traffic? I’m going to try out some network monitors I found after a search on google but if anybody can recommend a software product that they’ve tried I would be very much grateful.
  16. Some nice ideas everyone. Just a thought though, how about an options screen during the install of USP5 with a few options? The options could possibly be switched during the slipstream with the use of switches? For example: "Do you wish to set the version number to "Service Pack 5" at the sacrifice of Windows Update?" "Do you wish to enable the logo?" I personally would like the version number to say "Service Pack 5" and the logo looks cool as well but I would like to disable the logo if I install it onto a server because certain people at work would crucify me if they saw a logo saying the word "Unofficial" on the main server.
  17. In my opinion you need the following; 60 Windows XP licenses 40 Windows 2000 licenses 6 server 2003 licenses 1 SQL server license 1 exchange server 2003 license 70 windows server 2003 cals (assuming everybody needs access to a server) 70 exchange server 2003 cals (assuming everybody needs access to exchange) 70 Terminal server cals (assuming everybody needs access to Terminal server) 70 SQL Server cals (assuming everybody needs access to SQL Server) Bear in mind that you do get some cals with a server licence. I think that windows Server comes with 5 cals for example. Its difficult to buy windows 2000 licences these days but theres no point anyway. If your able to get onto the microsoft genuine advantage or open advantage (I forgot the correct name) you could buy 100 windows xp licences and you automatically get a vlk product key for both windows xp and for windows 2000. you will then be legally and officailly licenced for both windows 2000 and windows xp (as long as you dont go over 100 for the combination of both for example). This way, you could upgrade the 40 windows 2000 machines to windows xp sometime in the future should you wich to do so, and it wont cost you anymore money. The same applies for office 2003 because you get a choice of using either 2003 or xp. I think the same applies for exchange 2003 client licenses as well. If you bought cals for exchange 2000 after a certain date, your licenced for 2003 as well but you would need to check up on this.
  18. Thought this was quite good sorry guys I meant to of posted that in Funny Farm, my bad.
  19. Hell yes! A fully updated windows 2000 disk with IE6 built in - A gift from the gods. You're doing wondrous things Gurgelmeyer I hope you're feeling better.
  20. I based my instructions on him having a D: partition on his harddrive. Which is why I put at the top "Assuming your harddrive is FAT32 and your i386 dir is in the root of d:" - d: meaning harddrive. I assumed D: was a harddrive just like you assumed D: was a CD-ROM. Both of us can only give answers based on assumptions due to the lack of hard infomation we have about bigbroantonio's computer. I based my assumption on experience that most computers I've fixed for people have a D: partition.
  21. What does this do? Why do you need it? its called SmartDrive but smartdrv.exe is its filename. Its just a disk cacheing program for DOS. It isn't needed to install XP but I highly recommend it. For example, the last time I tried to install Windows 2000 from a hard drive, I gave up after like 3 hours because thats how bad it is. Load up smartdrv which is only about 45Kb and you can install windows in the normal time. Its the unpacking of the cabinet file which sufferes if you dont load smartdrv. It greatly speeds up install time by many times.
  22. My laptop supports a maximum of 96Mb ram but there's no fun in that its too easy. I like a challenge. Maybe when my project is complete and I'm running windows 2000 with only 19Mb ram, I might decide to buy more ram.
