  1. Im an IT Technician for a college and one of their rooms used to be sub-contracted out to another company which had their own IT Techincian. Anyway, one day this technician droped by to fix one of the computers in this room. I watched him rapidly move the mouse over the active window as fast as he can, each time the egg timer appeard. I ask him why he did that and he replied "to make sure I get maximum CPU usage in the active window. windows reserves CPU power for the mouse so if you move it rapidly over the active window when the egg timer appears, you again about 2% more CPU power in the active application". Even if thats true, Ive got better things to do when I see an egg timer and it usually involves a cup of coffee.
  2. You could install a mail server on your computer such as Pegasus Mail or ArGoSoft Mail Server. Argosoft is the easiest to setup but Pegasus is a better program. Seeing as its just for one computer though, then you may as well use Argosoft.
  3. I dont really care who they buy as long as they provide customer support for whatever hardware/software sold by said company.
  4. Its works both ways ya know. With PearPC you can run Mac OS X on a PC http://www.windowsdevcenter.com/pub/a/wind.../18/PearPC.html http://pearpc.sourceforge.net/screenshots.html
  5. You just have to configure Winamp to be your default player for ASX files by configuring filetypes in "folder options"
  6. never mind capital letters, how on earth are we suppose to do the colon
  7. WolfX2 got me to type with my nose ;P
  8. i tried to use an egg shell once but it broke
  9. No because its IBM PowerPC based CPU doesn't have an x86 or x64 instruction set. If it did, it still couldn't run Windows. Just like the original XBox couldn't run Windows even though it had an Intel Celeron 733. However, somebody did run Windows inside a virtual pc type environment on the original XBox on top of Linux. There's no reason why you cant run a moded Linux on the XBox 360 and then run Windows using Xen. Of course, you will have to wait until a compatible Linux distro gets made first. I believe somebody has already managed to mod the 360.
  10. At this code into a webpage <OBJECT id=VIDEO height=60 width=245 classid=CLSID:6BF52A52-394A-11d3-B153-00C04F79FAA6><PARAM NAME="URL" VALUE="http://www.sotelhob.com/negoomfm.asx"><PARAM NAME="rate" VALUE="1"> Or to play it directly in WMP, open WMP, click File, Open URL and paste your ASF link
  11. Have any of you actually tried all or most of these Antivirus products to give a definitive answer as to which ones are the best? If not I'll download every one to see which is best. At the moment I use Sophos but it uses 35Mb ram as a service and another 4Mb for its auto update service and seems to be slow. I want to change it for something else.
  12. if you want to use server software like exchange and SQL or share resources over a network, use 2003. If you want to use desktop software, use XP. I cant see any reason for debate. Its like saying racing car or 4x4. It depends what you need it for. I use desktop applications and games at home so I bought Windows XP. For the network at work, I installed 2003. There's no real answer as to which is best.
  13. its best to keep programs on a seperate partition. I've edited my registry so that when I install a program, it defaults to D: so I dont even have to manually choose when I install something. Defragmentation - when you install and remove a lot of programs, D: starts to suffer from fragmentation but fragmentation on C: is limited. When I format c: and re-install windows, I dont have to reinstall my games. They just work. Most programs have to be reinstalled but some still work. Games dont seem to have any problems. Half-life asks for the CD-KEY again but thats about it. Oh, and about this NTFS vs FAT thing, NTFS uses logging when writing files to a harddisk. If a system crashes before it gets a chance to write the latest changes to the drive, diskcheck can view the NTFS transaction logs and write the changes to repair your partition. Also, NTFS doesn't get defraged so easily. FAT is a nightmare for defragmentation. Please can one of you FAT junkies post a link to some benchmarks which prove FAT is faster than NTFS? It depends which cluster size you choose as well when you create your partition/volume (big clusters are faster but use more drive space). Granted, When you only have a few files on a small partition, FAT will be faster. However, NTFS dominates when you have a lot of files on a large drive. Especially when you use dynamic volumes as opposed to basic partitions.
  14. I dont know much about domains but you might just have to create an alias on your DNS server called www which points to your IIS server so that when somebody types http://www.domain.name into a browser, it points to your IIS server. DNS names are read backwards so after your domian, your DNS server will send back the IP of www (your IIS server) back to the client that requested it. if this works let me know.
  15. considering the core of windows 98 dates back to the early 80s when computers were only a fraction of what they are today, I would say that win98 is a very nice piece of programing. XP of course replaced the aging 98 OS with some new technology. Yes, XP is a better OS but why bash it like you do? Dont you do enough bashing at night?
  16. The only folder you need on the windows 98 disk is the win98 folder. This can be striped right down using 98lite. You could also check out http://winimize.com/

    W2k vs Xp

I've been using XP as my main OS since 2001 and I'm seriously thinking about going back to 2000. Of all the extra features XP has over 2000, the only one I use is the built in firewall so its pointless using XP as far as im conserved. I use 2000 at work and its so much lighter and sleeker.
  18. that sounds cool, what shell did you use I would like to know more...
  19. Yes, if you have a 30-day version of a piece of software, I cant see a problem with cracking it. Of course, after the 30-day period runs out you MUST purchase or uninstall the software as you're no longer licenced to use that piece of software. Using software beyond the trial period IS ILLEGAL. Oh, and Adobe didn't WILLINGLY give you ALL the associated code. They WILLINGLY gave you a trial license to USE the associated code. Oh and by the way, read the forum rules: Discussion of circumventing WGA/activation/timebombs/keygens or any other illegal activity will also not be tolerated.
  20. Workstation: Windows XP Pro Server: Windows XP Pro Laptop: Windows 2000 Pro
  21. I really dont get this. If you want a workstation, buy XP or 2K. If you want a server, buy 2003. All this stuff about converting 2003 into XP - why bother? Its a bit like somebody inventing a machine that can convert tea into coffee. Why not buy coffee in the first place? Oh, because tea has better memory management.
  22. Hotstream is a service pack. you cant use a service pack to intergrate something. you need a tool to intergate something. If you want to intergate IE6 you can use HFSLIP. However, I dont think HFSLIP is compatible with hotstream The latest hotstream or USP does contain IE6
