  1. Yes I've got a very old Toshiba Portege 320CT laptop which doesn't have a CD-ROM. I fitted its harddrive to my main PC using a 2.5inch to 3.5inch adapter. I then formated it using FORMAT C: /S and I copied the i386 folder into the D: drive along which SMARTDRV.EXE I then put the harddrive back into my laptop and it booted into DOS. I loaded SMARTDRV and then installed Windows 2000.
  2. Welcome to the forums fellow Limey. Enjoy your stay

  6. There's no such a thing as specific dual channel memory. It's all just normal DDR. It’s just the dual channel capable motherboard that’s special which allows you to put two sticks of DDR in separate and independent 64-bit channels, giving you effectively 128-bit. I bought a dual channel motherboard myself a few years ago with a single stick of TwinMOS DDR 3200. Last year, I added a second stick of Corsair DDR 3200 and my motherboard reported that it was in Dual Channel Mode. Of course, it’s always best to use identical sticks when in dual channel mode so a lot of memory manufacturers sell memory in identical pairs (from the same batch in some cases) which they guarantee will work in dual DDR mode but its not special or anything.
  7. Well for a start, an IT Tech would NEVER give everyone local admin rights because thats just crazy. Lets start with adding a member to a domain. The default setting for Windows Server 2003 lets each user add up to 10 computers to a domain anyway, providing of course, the Network Admin adds each computer to the Active Directory Users and Computer snap-in. Anyway, you can just allow them to do this in the Group Policy Management Console | User Rights Assignment| | Add workstations to aomain Under Security Options in the Group Policy Management Console you can allow people to install printers. You can automate software rollout in Group Policie as well but its best not to allow everyone to be able to do this themself, otherwise some people will start installing un-licenced software they have downloaded or brought in from home.
  8. Its good to see you around again Gurgelmeyer, we've all missed you
  9. found some good info for you to take a look at http://www.overclockers.com/tips30/
  10. no its the heat - they burn out. Just like a light bulb burns out I guess. You could make a light bulb brighter by increasing the voltage but it will burn out much sooner. Anyway, chips have a life span of around 10 years I think so if overclocking brings this down to 5 years - who cares?
  11. You lost me there. If I'm leaving public toilets, I pull my sleeve over my hand when I open the door so I dont have to touch the door knob. Sometimes I wait a few seconds for somebody else to walk in so I dont have to touch the door knob and sometimes I manage to put my fingle in the gap at the top of the door and open it that way. The rest of the time, I use my little finger at the edge of the door knob where nobody else touches it.
  12. Little Britain is a comedy shown on UK television. It may be shown in a few other countries I'm not sure. Anyway, I'm guessing Ting Tong is one of the new characters. I like the show but I haven't watched it for a while because I've been too busy lately.
  13. I want my family, my friends and myself to be happy this Christmas. I also want world peace.
  14. You need to switch off "Windows File Protection"
  15. thats because 5.1 hasn't been released yet. Hence the topic "USP 5.1 Extreme Edition, Post your ideas" How's the progress anyway Gurgelmeyer?
  16. I went on the A+ course at the local college. The college stopped the course after about 5 weeks because they found out that the teacher wasn't properly qualified to teach the course. The college could see that I was naturally highly skilled at computers and networking so they employed me to look after the network
  17. what do you have your browser homepage set to?
  18. Need a bit more info than that. What's the error message?
  19. You need Service Pack 4 and Update Rollup for SP4. The later is a rollup of updates which were released after Service Pack 4. The Update Rollup requires Service Pack 4 so you need both. Tommy P wrote HFSLIP which can integrate all the updates for you - even the seperate updates relased after the Update Rollup, giving you your very own fully updated Windows 2000 disk. Gurgelmeyer has made his own Unofficial Service Pack 5 which includes SP4 + Rollup + a shed load of updates. This can be intergrated into your very own Windows 2000 disk as well using nlite
  20. well www.acharrow.org.uk works fine for me. DNS entries can take up to 48 hours to fully replicate accross all the DNS server accross the world so it might work for you tomorrow. The domain seems to point to 212.104.129.25
  21. I'm sure startup.wav is copyrighted material so you must own a Windows 2000 license before you can use it. You will have to find out who the author of the wav file is and contact him/her for permision to put it on your website. Microsoft probably owns all rights to it though. A guy called Brian Eno was commissioned by Microsoft to create the Windows 95 startup sound but I'm not sure about Windows 2000
