My Browser Builds (Part 3)
NotHereToPlayGames replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
HUNDREDS of differences. You will have to use both and decide for yourself which is right for you. BOTH have Chinese telemetry removed and they basically are 90% identical to each other. It is that 10% that you basically need to decide for yourself which is right for you. I want to throw a shoe at my monitor every time a Humming Owl version pops up a "nag screen" or I have to hit the "ESC" button to unlock the GUI - but those are first-run only and a matter of personal preference. -

Here -- https://msfn.org/board/topic/182993-360-extreme-explorer-arcticfoxie-versions/ I changed my member name from ArcticFoxie to NotHereToPlayGames because of some of the childish behavior that existed here at MSFN a while back but has since "cleaned up its act". -

You may need to extract and edit .xml files inside "skin.srx" also. -

For my versions (would require slightly different route in Humming Owl versions), you should only need to edit "browser_strings.xml" which is a file inside "en_skin.srx". The .srx is just a renamed .zip extension and should extract with any .zip program you have. View the .xml file using something like Notepad++ and change the English strings to German strings. -

Somebody that speaks German would have to create the German language file - I have no interest nor time outside of English. As far as having web sites deliver content in German by default, you should be able to edit the Preferences file and replace "en-US, en" with whatever the German equivalent is. You would have to edit and save the Preferences file while 360Chrome is not running (verify using Task Manager). -

I do not have that font issue in my 360Chrome (v11, v12, v13, v13.5). But there are hurdles you have to jump through and it's nearly impossible for me to isolate without knowing "exactly" the context of the screencap you are using to demonstrate font issues. -

No clue what these screencaps are. You should also disable 3rd Party Fonts by using something like UBlock or uMatrix. Mypal and 360Chrome handle 3rd Party Fonts differently. Again, there will NEVER be a web browser that works 100% "out of the box", you will ALWAYS have to make changes to settings, about:config, chrome://flags, extensions, et cetera. I doubt it will be possible for me (or anyone else here) to walk you through the entire process. You are "used to" Mozilla-based browsers. The BIGGEST mistake that most Mozilla Users have made over the past decade is that they didn't keep up with Chromium-based and only now (the "modern web") are they faced with LEARNING how to use Chromium-based. I say this because I was one of them! I used Mozilla-based for DECADES. Mozilla (in my humble opinion) is DEAD - it's time to learn Chromium-based browsers. Will that change in the future? I HOPE SO. I won't make the same mistake this time around, I intend to "try" to keep up with BOTH so that it isn't a complete start-from-scratch learning curve whenever I "switch back". But for now, as sad as it may be to admit for most around here, CHROMIUM is kicking Mozilla "butt". We ALL have our fingers crossed that the butt-kicking is not "permanent". -

You will *always* have this on XP! Which web sites show as "insecure" (THOUGH NOT ACTUALLY INSECURE) in one browser versus the next is IRRELEVANT. The bottom line regarding a web sites "padlock" is that you can NOT use XP if you "want" this padlock to indicate "secure" on the "modern web". If you want to use XP (which I myself do!), then you "must" ACCEPT certain "flaws" that come with opting to remain on XP. -

Here is 360Chrome v13 and it DOES have a javascript engine capable of the "modern web" and we know this because GitHub displays the "Go to file" button. -

Here's a screencap of 360Chrome v11 and it too does not have a javascript engine capable of the "modern web". -

Here's a screencap showing the most recent (just this past weekend) out-of-the-box installs for NM27, NM28, Serpent 55, and Serpent 52 and demonstrates that NONE OF THEM have a javascript engine capable of the "modern web". -

You will find that NONE of the web browsers in this thread will match that criteria "out of the box". I'll return to show some screencap's as this will take a few minutes to answer fully. -

This is the best answer I can find for you -- No two people on the planet use their web browser the same exact way. One user only needs "red and blue" so the "purple" web browser fits 100% of their needs but that web browser fails at "yellow". Et cetera... -
Did you keep any data to support this? I was given two laptops with i3's and I've opted to not put XP on these two laptops. I have tested Vista Extended Kernel and was thoroughly unimpressed - I applaud the endeavors of "extending" kernels, but I don't see myself going that route (at least not yet). I have been leaning towards installing Win7 Enterprise on these laptops until I stumbled into this 'claim' regarding Win8.

That option sets 360Chrome to clear the selected items each and every time that you close 360Chrome. The click the button dialog is because the very first time that a user sets this, they could have selected items in the GIGABYTE range, so the prompt is to clear that 'now' instead of waiting for the next closing of 360Chrome.

Love the way you think! And while I am a "conservationist" (I don't "hug trees" but I have a strong dislike towards "wasteful" habits that most folks don't even see as "habits"), I have a different take. I only live 0.7 miles from work. No traffic lights between me and the office, just one 4-way stop sign. One tank of gas in my SUV will get me a MINIMUM of one month, I have been known to stretch ONE tank of gas out for THREE MONTHS. I rollerblade to work, I ride bike to work, but seldom do I "walk" to work. My first year at this job, I peddled bike basically 80% of the time or so. If it wasn't raining, I peddled the bike to and from work. It ended up COSTING me in the long run. The tires on the SUV "dry-rotted", small cracks where it looked like the treads were going to fly off. I was informed it was BECAUSE the truck didn't get driven but once a week or so! The battery needed replaced because it could not start the vehicle in the colder winter. I was informed it was BECAUSE the truck didn't get driven but once a week or so! So in my case, it is far FAR better cost-wise to DRIVE TO WORK but I live so close that I get a MINIMUM of ONE MONTH on ONE tank of gas. -

Totally understand. I haven't needed this project (yet) but do foresee the need. The preview version is definitely where I saw this project going. Looks great!- 922 replies

ProxHTTPSProxy and HTTPSProxy in Windows XP for future use
NotHereToPlayGames replied to AstroSkipper's topic in Windows XP
Totally understand. I also compare this to my rebuilds of 360Chrome. A very VERY large number of hours but a very VERY tiny number of users. But in the end, I had to do it for myself anyway because there were no XP browsers worthy of keeping XP around. Roytam browsers were INCAPABLE of handling the modern web, plain and simple. By rebuilding 360Chrome, I have extended my own use of XP by two years as I almost ditched XP completely two years ago. I have not used your project (yet). But I have been watching and sitting on the sidelines. As of now, the thread is too long for anyone to jump-start and dive in unless they were watching from the beginning. The first post is too long and confusing for new people to jump in, just my opinion. Once the recent screen-cap version is available for use, I see it as a reason to then use this project and can then comment accordingly. A new thread may be needed at that time, the first is kind of "busy" and confusing. Too many download links - which ones are and are not "required", which ones are for historical "reference"?- 922 replies

TOTALLY AGREED! I have OFTEN wanted to present the Boss (and HR!) with a lengthy "presentation" of the pros and cons of IT and a data-driven analysis of how IT has COST the company in WASTED downtime and man-hours by "having" an IT Department! -
My Browser Builds (Part 3)
NotHereToPlayGames replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
I'm curious if there are any Roytam Followers that know these builds enough to recommend which one is "optimum" for Windows 7? I don't want a "use the most recent version" approach, I want a version that has been benchmarked as "best" for Windows 7. I did this for XP and Mypal 27.9.4 "was" the absolute best as far as witnessed benchmark results. Each and every new "update" seemed to only DEGRADE "performance". And so I lost track and stopped keeping up with Roytam browsers - but seem to read a TON of "issues" of late, making all the more leary of "use the most recent version". Thoughts? -

I'll have to disagree. Chromium 80 is the first version to introduce most of the "modern web" polyfill crap. I use v11 for 99% of my web browsing needs and v13 (not 13.5!) for the remaining 1%. I use v11 for a reason, one of my computers only has 2 GB RAM and using anything newer is very taxing on that computer. And when I'm faced with 99% to 1%, there really is ZERO reason for me to "default" to anything newer. v12 is based on Chromium 78 - too old for the modern web, more RAM-hungry than v11 but LESS so than v13/v13.5. Something based on Chromium 80 should be the absolute best as far as modern-web-capable while balancing the requirements for why most of us use 360Chrome in the first place - we want to keep our existing hardware.
