narrowing down my default browser for my Win10 setups
NotHereToPlayGames replied to NotHereToPlayGames's topic in Windows 10
Takes too much time, to be perfectly honest. I can copy-and-paste into a post in seconds. Using some form of permanent image server takes far too much time for a "here-and-now" discussion. -
narrowing down my default browser for my Win10 setups

A quick update (I noticed a few of my downloads last night were not the "latest" for each version [GitHub doesn't list releases in order apparently]). Yes, I've always been happy with v96 builds. They tend to be a nice sweet spot in performance and "newer" versions add a lot of "bloat" like side-bar "features" that just degrade performance. What I actually find as a positive (for the future) is the good results for v104+. While I do not "like" them for my tastes, what it suggests is that Chromium is getting "better" and perhaps dropping support for Win7 will only prove how much FASTER the browser can become on Win10! Yet to be seen, of course, but it would be very positive (for the future of web browsers) if Chromium becomes FASTER FASTER FASTER after they abandon Win7. Not to be misread though, I still use XP most of the time here at home (I've been transitioning to Win10 but only as a "hobby" for now). -

Agreed. I didn't go back as far as v90 with my tests yesterday. Here's what I am showing on one of my low-end PCs with Hibbiki versions on Win10. I have not yet compared his "nosync" versus an "ungoogled" as far as Google connections. -
My dad used to complain constantly about the amount of spam in his inbox (and in the mailbox at the end of the driveway). It took *years* to convince him that it was basically HIS FAULT. My credit card accounts, my utility bills, my checking and savings account, they all ask for an email address when establishing online access - NONE OF MINE have my "real" email address! That could be too extreme, but the point is you have to draw a line on just who you TRUST with your "real" email address and don't just give it to "every" online web site you come accross. MSFN obviously has my real one - but my WORK email and not my HOME email. Truth be told, I did not want to but this is like the ONLY web site I've ever signed up for that would not "activate" using a 'throw-away' Gmail or Guerrilla Mail email address. But that was years ago and I don't recall the details as to why a Gmail or Guerrilla Mail account would not work at the time.

I seem to recall that either 92, 94, 96, or 97 was my "fastest", but cannot recall offhand. -

I'm not 100% tied to GDIChromium at this stage (for Win7 it's a must but GDI vs DirectWrite isn't as big of a concern for me on Win10). Hibbiki is a new one I've not heard of. I balance across four different Win10 machines and primarily use https://browserbench.org/Speedometer2.1/ and run with the browser that all four computers score the highest average. So it's not always the "fastest" for one of the four, but that's the balancing act. -
Thanks. The laptop currently has 8.1 and I'm unsure if it came with 8.0 or 8.1 but will not matter as far as product key. Good to know that the key shouldn't be needed during install. I wanted to make sure I had it copied somewhere before wiping the hard drive and starting new.

narrowing down my default browser for my Win10 setups

My Win10-preferred is GDIChromium v96. I run LTSB 2016 at home and the work computer says "Windows 10 OSD combined 2102" in Device spec's and "Windows 10 Enterprise 20H2" in Windows spec's. OS Build here at work says "19042.2486". I also PREFER to be SEVERAL versions below "bleeding-edge". I run GDIChromium v96 both here at work and at home. Partly due to Ungoogled Chromium will not stream one of my Live TV web sites at work and I prefer to use the same profile on all computers, be it work or home or garage. -
Here is what is happening. This .css file is where it starts -- https://www.skyrc.com/catalog/view/javascript/font/caiseicon/iconfont.css That .css file is using a font declaration in a manner I've not seen before (does't mean it's not common, only means I've not seen "woff2" fonts defined this way). Break this ONE woff2 font and leave all other "remote" fonts intact and this web site works in 360Chrome v13.5 build 1030 on XP. This is how that one .css file is defining the one woff2 font causing the issue - @font-face { font-family: "caise"; /* Project id 3673278 */ /* Color fonts */ src: That is "your" interpretation. MY use of "quotes" in WRITTEN form is akin to "air quotes" in verbal form. Pretty common here in the Midwest even if not common in your part of the world. Definitely not worth "arguing" over! air quotes, noun, a pair of quotation marks gestured by a speaker's fingers in the air, to indicate that what is being said is ironic or mocking, or is not a turn of phrase the speaker would typically employ.

Because I'm *not* a fan of restore "partitions". I prefer one partition per OS (in the case of multi-boot setups) and axe restore "partitions" because I have no use for them.

I cannot read the COA sticker on the bottom of the laptop. But I do know that the NirSoft scanner indicates one product key FIVE times. One was clearly indicated as BIOS and the other four were indicated as Registry. No clue beyond that because the last two computers that I purchased did not come with an install disk so I "refused" to buy the computer and that prompted the retailer to provide an actual install disk at no extra charge.
