  1. I’m actually glad to hear you say that because firewalls and task managers are not really that interesting to me. (Granted, firewalls never got the attention they deserved in the previous thread about antivirus programs known to be working on XP, so your emphasis on them now is a worthwhile contribution.) Of course antimalware options for XP would not be quite so “rare” if legacy versions of Kaspersky or Norton’s “maintenance mode” version were not excluded. I have been reviewing the previous antivirus thread (now locked) in recent days. It existed for several years, but interestingly enough, it didn’t reach a length of 30 pages until March 2023, so congratulations on your prodigious writing here! I came across a forgotten post from June 14, 2019 showing that Kaspersky Free 19.0.0.1088 did in fact work on someone’s XP SP3. In those days, MSFN members could actually post about Kaspersky without being harassed by multiple accounts that did not yet exist. Is it possible in 2023?
  2. Greetings @silverni. What specific version of Sandboxie? Some of us have experience with 5.22 (a closed source version from 2017), but I wonder if you are familiar with 5.40, an open source development that was suggested by your countryman @Sampei.Nihira in December 2020? Agreed - and we are not really even at war (except Russia and Ukraine). 👍
  3. The best time to make a clone is before the drive goes bad.
  4. Meta’s new app is called Threads and is expected to be released tomorrow. It is being described as a “Twitter killer,” which would suit me just fine.
  5. Hi Karla, welcome to MSFN. Of course we do have a forum dedicated to Vista (under Older Windows NT-Family OSes) where you could ask any question you want, and it is probably the best Vista forum in the world! Unfortunately, “modern gaming on Vista” is hardly possible in 2023.
  6. Looks like official government hot air to me: https://www.politico.com/f/?id=00000182-8757-d843-a79a-c77f59590000
  7. I NEVER USED KASPERSKY! You sound just like D.Draker and the other accounts of the Vista x64-using, Kaspersky-hating European (all of which I am blocking). What I am promoting is freedom of speech at MSFN, nothing more or less. I would truly like to be on friendly terms with you AstroSkipper, but perhaps it is too late for that now. If I have offended you in a personal way, then I sincerely apologize for that. I’m trying to celebrate Independence Day here, so good night to you now.
  8. “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” - Benjamin Franklin
  9. MSFN’s tiny Anti-Kaspersky clique has already broken any geopolitical barrier that was once thought to exist, e.g. I wonder if moderators noticed that AstroSkipper announced his own foreign policy in a Windows XP thread? However, if a moderator chooses to delete my previous post here, I would not be angry or heart-broken. I miss the old MSFN.
  10. For TikTok’s critics, it’s not just about personal data: It’s also about what we might call “Xi-nophobia.” Chairman Xi, who is said to be “Putin’s puppeteer,” will allegedly use TikTok to spread Chinese propaganda and “brainwash America’s youth” with the help of artificial intelligence. If you point out that TikTok’s headquarters are in Singapore, they will retort that Singapore is “a well-known Red Chinese nest,” and in any case parent company ByteDance is in fact based in Beijing. It sounds suspiciously like jingoism to me, but I don’t plan to use TikTok on my iPhone.
  11. This topic is tagged with “German glory”!? Certain MSFN members probably think the German government should order AV Test in Magdeburg to halt all testing of Kaspersky products (or much worse: give Kaspersky low scores instead of the top scores that it generally achieves). I’m an American who believes that freedom of speech is worth fighting for, but I do realize that Europeans don’t necessarily view this right in the same way that I do. To me, the fact that Germany has not suppressed AV Test is an encouraging sign that democracy in Germany is strong - perhaps even stronger than it is in the United States. I’m proud to be an ally of Germany! 🇩🇪 https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/manufacturer/kaspersky-lab/
  12. I also hate Twitter now. I’m proud to say that I was permanently suspended from Mr. Muskrat’s rat nest several months ago! Some of my Twitter friends spoke about moving to Mastodon, but I have not joined (yet). I recently heard that Meta (Facebook’s parent company) has plans to launch an alternative social media platform, and Muskrat is so enraged that he has challenged Mark Zuckerberg to a fight. Get him Zuckerberg! https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-v-mark-zuckerberg-could-happen-in-romes-colosseum-2023-6
  13. Much has been written about the potential dangers of TikTok, a popular app made by a Chinese company. Here’s a link to a Popular Science article that tries to be balanced: https://www.popsci.com/technology/tiktok-ultimatum-ban-us-uk/
  14. Good for you! However, I don’t think a licence for 5.22 is obtainable in 2023, and the free version nagged after 30 days (see my September 30, 2019 post). I attempted to register two posts after the linked post, but it was already impossible by that time! So 5.40 would seem to be the best option for XP users who want to try Sandboxie nowadays.
  15. Subject: Sandboxie It appears that my recollection was faulty. I tracked down a Sampei.Nihira post on the subject of Sandboxie for Windows XP from December 2020. He did not suggest a version earlier than 5.22, but rather version 5.40 (developed after Sandboxie became open source). I will edit my earlier post to correct it. Edit: My recollection wasn’t so bad after all: I was just remembering an earlier post from Sampei.Nihira on February 10, 2020 in which he stated, “The latest version of SandboxIE that best suits working with Windows XP is 3.76.” I will leave my earlier post as it is and apologize for any confusion.
  16. Sandboxie is an excellent suggestion, but I’ll bet it is already on AstroSkipper’s “internal list.” I can confirm that 5.22 was reportedly the last version to support XP and also that it worked on Vista x86 (see my August 30, 2019 post). @UCyborg are you actually using Sandboxie 5.22 on XP? I recall mentioning 5.22 in a Windows XP thread years ago, but @Sampei.Nihira insisted that an earlier version was best for XP. He was MSFN’s security guru for Windows XP in those days, so perhaps he might have something to add about Sandboxie etc.
  17. My list of “Ignored Users” has now grown to three accounts, but they probably all belong to the same person (or organization). You can’t say I wasn’t polite toward the “Dixel” resurrection. Bye bye!
  18. I was also confused by Cixert’s post, but I think Spybot 2.4 was the last to support XP/Vista. (I never used it.) https://www.safer-networking.org/spybot-2-5-compatibility/
  19. OT since ESET is no longer an option for XP - but since you are so knowledgeable about such matters, I have to ask: Is Bratislava another “KGB nest”? 🤔
  20. Best practice is to create an up-to-date image using Macrium Reflect or similar software before installing any antivirus, and Avast 18.8 in particular!
  21. I can’t speak about the difficulty of uninstalling Avast because I never uninstalled it (18.8 is still on my broken-down Vista machine), and of course ESET is no longer an option. I saw numerous similar reports about the old AVG before Avast bought the company, including the removal tool not working, but I used to know a simple trick: Disable Self-Protection in Advanced settings before attempting to uninstall! This just might help with some other third-party AV products. Of course Microsoft Security Essentials uninstalled flawlessly (too bad it’s not an option for XP anymore), and Norton’s removal tool actually worked (my old PC came with Norton bundled).
  22. I have chosen to block Cocodile’s content, but from your quotation it appears that he has dredged up old privacy concerns about Avast that were of course discussed in another thread more than 3 years ago (MSFN wasn’t born yesterday, and AstroSkipper and I were both Avast users back then). To make a long story short, Avast halted the practice soon after it was widely publicized. Here’s a link that was first brought to our attention by @jaclaz, who I thank: https://www.pcmag.com/news/avast-to-end-browser-data-harvesting-terminates-jumpshot
  23. Better get rid of 7-zip then - or is open-source software permissible? How do you feel about using Chinese-made software?
  24. I had not given the company much thought since the debacle of March 2015, but found myself thinking about its survival prospects (tough times for the antivirus industry with Microsoft stealing so many customers) and looked it up. Panda Security has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of American company WatchGuard for 3 years. This is somewhat encouraging I think. https://www.infosecurity-magazine.com/news/watchguard-completes-panda/
