  1. Have you tried to see if the symptoms are the same in safemode?
  2. But of course! Next year i will surely love something that i dont like. :) Typical users ability to Vote with their wallet has been taken away this cycle. Its free, so deal with it.
  3. I would recommend to find the cause of the actual problem. We know XP Pro_SP3 is capable of transfering files, we know your hardware is capable because it works through BartPE or Hiren's, it seems to be there is an issue in that specific OS installation you have there (whether corrupted files, drivers, configuration, etc). +1 for teracopy (when the actual issue is resolved).
  4. Well, companies will cheat on car emissions tests, or keep selling talcum powder when signs point to it causing ovarian cancer (as two recent examples), so MS fudging some OS use stats seems like a no brainer. Too bad though, even if the charts said 99.99999% of all computers ran windows 10, i still wouldnt use it.
  5. Speed is important, but for me personally, being able to search drives on the local system, on the network, on ftp, or 5 or 6 laptops from a single db, makes 3rd party software my preference. As i said above, having the db for a failed / lost / stolen drive is also a bonus for me. Sure i dont have the actual data, but not knowing what exactly was lost is insult to injury (imo). You do need to manually update the db or specific volumes, for informational purposes, just took 00:00:03 to update db of a drive of 723 folders, 10,277 files, with a total size of 640.52 gb (sata 7200). 8 seconds to search for *srgb*.* in current db of 62,516 folders, 1,182,903 files, of 8.58 tb. With something like the above, it allows me to disable windows services that help 'speed up' searches. Its all personal choice, use what works best for you :) I really dont have anything to do with DEP, i wont make money if you use it, and i wont be sad if you dont.
  6. Eh, ok. You had asked why use a db, i was trying to shed some light on why i feel its better.
  7. "To determine the current size of the MFT, analyze the NTFS file system drive with Disk Defragmenter, then click the View Report button. The drive statistics will be displayed, including the current MFT size, and number of fragments. You can also obtain the size of the MFT by using the FSCTL_GET_NTFS_VOLUME_DATA control code." https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa365230%28v=vs.85%29.aspx
  8. How big is your MFT? How big is the database created by Everything or Ultra search? For me, currently, only my C: mft is 174mb. My DEP catalogue (which contains my C, plus about 8 other drives) is 57mb. Roughly 1/3 the size. Clearly i can search the smaller file quicker, with the bonus of searching off-system files at the same time. Also, if a hard drive dies, it will be a lot harder to check the mft than a 3rd party catalogue. I dont know about you, but if i lose data i at least want to have info on what exactly was lost You can include meta data in DEP, or disable it and only have file name / size. There is also a plugin maker to create your own stuff if you so please.
  9. Sorry to go OT, but this may help someone. Disk Explorer Pro indexes drives or folders, makes searching large databases of files very very fast. Ive had nothing but joy using it. You can keep one database on a USB key and be able to find out which hard drive or computer the file you seek is on (no need to even boot up until you find it). The best part is that the developer has released it as freeware for some time. I am not part of DEP, just passing along the info. Get your copy @ http://tjelinek.com/main.php?section=d
  10. Screenshots of start menu are posted here: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/insider_wintp-insider_install/build-14915-known-issues-and-new-bugs/2391703d-42f5-46df-bac2-be42e75491bf?page And my favorite @ http://www.techezone.com/question/windows-10-build-14915-serious-problems-with-all-native-apps-2/ “The Feedback Hub is blank but if I wait for 10min or so a few white boxes show up. I can’t send feed back because I have no idea what I’m clicking on. When I move my cursor it “highlights” what I’m on but it’s a white box. When I right click I get a white box in response.” Guys, no issues being reported with 14915, its perfect, you NAILED IT!
  11. Telemetry shows us that most users cant click icons, text boxes, etc. They keep missing objects. We should phase out the mouse all together. Get working on that next update. Release the mouse driver killing kraken!
  12. I dont think the razor can explain this. When the leaked information came out, all the companies mentioned feared loss of trust and profits from customers. They came out saying that they were forced to hand over the info, that they didnt want to, but under the law they needed to. Fast forward a handful of years later and what does MS do? They create more data collection, hard code it into the OS, make it hard to disable it, set it on by default, reverse settings per (forced) update, and even threw data collection updates to the older OS's. Why collect the data if you dont want to hand it over, if you were "forced" and "didnt like it"? If MS really didnt want to hand over information, they would have made a more secure OS, not one that collects more info. If they are really under the "razor", then they are so stupid that i really shouldnt trust any of my data in their OS's hands. Exactly. Must we live in glass houses now, because if we have nothing to hide, we should allow the governments to watch us? If we have nothing to say, should we give up our freedom of speech? If the governments and tech industries are only doing this to protect us, why did they hide it? If they have nothing to hide.... Why did we need to wait until Edward Snowden leaked the information to find out about it? Hypocracy at its finest. If the razor is the explanation, i think they must have cut off both their hands by now.
  13. Its simple. The Edward Snowden Wikileaks documents hold your answer. It shows that over the period shown, June to July 2010, data from Yahoo generated by far the most NSA intelligence reports, followed by Microsoft, and then Google. You think maybe some black budget funds made it to MS to develope this spyware? It could explain the Free Upgrades. http://www.theguardian.com/world/interactive/2013/nov/01/snowden-nsa-files-surveillance-revelations-decoded#section/1
  14. They dont call them mans best friend for nothing. My thoughts and heart go out to all the victims and their families (pets too :( ).
  15. Windows 10 - Deeper Impressions That has a ring to it. Maybe it could be a marketing campaign. You dont get deeper impressions of us, we get deeper impressions of you. Love MS & NSA. or Windows 10 - Deeper Impression; one fingerprint, email, and voice clip at a time.
  16. Windows is now a moving target with the way they are handling updates. Its expected that there wouldnt be large numbers of tweakers at this point in time. Crappy bloated os, strongarm upgrade tactics, bugs, nsa spying... i cant figure out why pc sales are down.
  17. Look around for info on ei.cfg I use the tool in the last post of this thread personally http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/175463-aio-dvd-retail-oem-versions/
  18. read the last paragraph of your 2nd link; Whether this tactic work remains to be seen. Following the interest that this case generated, Teri now has a class action lawsuit starting against Microsoft in both the US and Canada. It's also hard to imagine that more people won't be inspired to do much the same, so Microsoft could well find itself in court again.
  19. Thanks for picking up the torch and updating this fine little tool.
