  1. Had to stop and think about the Apple work station (iMac). MS Office 2010 vs Office:Mac 2011: Both stable, however Apple hardware is more durable. Skype vs Facetime: Facetime winner with user friendliness. Facetime just works on both the iMac and the iPhone. IE doesn't run on Apple. IE 11 works on some Win but is being replaced by Edge. Apple has several browsers that just work. Mail programs that just work. Other office software that just works if you don't want Office:Mac. Five year old iMac with hardware technology beyond new PCs on the shelf today and the OS software just works. Major updates that just work and cost $20 or are free and are not forced into the iMac. Yup, the list goes on and on. The Apple just works. When an update is chosen, it downloads and installs in a fraction of the time that Win stuff requires. It just works. Thanks for bringing out the reason why the production computer is not a Win machine. Sometimes I forget how easy it is to use the iMac compared to the Win PCs. I guess that the Win PCs are there for fun and to provide source issues for this forum. I gave up on the MS Insider forums because they became not fun. This forum provides fun mind challenges that happen to be about computer stuff.
  2. Microsoft reasonably expected the Win 10 Insiders to do just that. Perhaps you're right. It does seem to be a little foolish to spend so much time on the Win 10 Insider project. However, starving to death doesn't seem to be a problem. But the return on investment doesn't seem to be there. Thanks for pointing out my foolishness. At least this forum gives one food for thought. Hard to get mind hungry here.
  3. Or OS X 10.11 Yup, where the real work is done. Win 10 is for smiles so it has a use.
  4. Yup. Just as if I closed the Settings app. 14366 fixed it.
  5. Let the games begin: Win 10 Fast Insider: [10 year old MacBook versus 10 year old Dell Laptop] : Update: Both computers experienced the same problem when trying to use Settings-Privacy (Settings terminated) under 14361. Both computers experienced a correction to this issue under 14366. Score this inning: 0-0. [The crowds at the Win 10 event were subdued] Smiles all around.
  6. I thought back to when I first received one of the scam calls. It was a month after I entered the Insider program. The caller always identified themselves as MS Tech Support. Later on the "Red Flag" was that they were receiving error reports on their remote computer the last couple of days so that they called to fix the problem remotely. However, that happened to be at a time that none of the MS PCs had been turned on for 2 weeks? They still insisted that the error messages were coming in. They hung up when I asked for their MS phone number and location. Something to ponder in this fun world of computing.
  7. Clandestine Impression: Made a post to MS Insider forum a day ago. Got one of the scam phone calls saying that my laptop sent an error message and MS Support was responding to fix the laptop. Is it possible or probable that the MS insider Forum is being data mined or hacked by the alleged scammers to gather personal information? Yup, probably just being ultra cautious and a little off the deep end. However, has anyone heard of anything like this?
  8. Let the games begin: Win 10 Fast Insider: [10 year old MacBook versus 10 year old Dell Laptop] Both computers use dual core Intel CPUs and Intel chipsets on the mother board. As of today both have version 1607 build 14361 and both had clean installs of that operating system. I'm beginning to think that Intel chipsets may favor Windows 10. The first challenge was passed by both systems, cleanly install fast track Win 10. The second challenge is with no special modifications, softwarewise, Win 10 needs to keep running. This camp doesn't set the bar very high. Just having fun in a challenging election year. Computers should just run and tell the truth at least most of the time. Perhaps, I should call this a computer foster camp for oldies but goodies. How about 10 year old computers are really 100 years old in human years?
  9. Well, the MacBook has done it again. Win 10 fast insider update 14361 cleanly installed! I noticed the version is now 1607. I'm beginning to wonder if the MS developers are using Apple hardware for this creation? Windows 10 just likes this Apple. Wait, is that Steve rolling over? Now if I could just get Ghostery Extension to install on Edge.
  10. I don't remember the exact name. The window was the actual download for Win 10 that was running. I stopped the task with Task manager instead of Xing the window. For good measure, I restarted the PC. I like 64bit IE 11 for Win 7. But I usually install it with the downloaded IE 11 from MS that I keep on a thumb drive. On Win 10, I pin IE 11 to the taskbar from windows accessories and then select it as the default browser. Also, Waterfox gets installed on the 64bit computers so there is a backup browser that for me has been very stable. Yes, Ghostery addon gets installed, too. I'm still waiting for the negatives to show up with Ghostery. So far, not there. ****************************************** Edit: Another thought about stopping the automatic Win 10 upgrades. This will be seen as obvious by many people but because of it I haven't seen it written down. Most PCs are set up to install the Windows 10 update at 3:00 am in the morning when the PC is left on over night and the user is sleeping. Stop the upgrade by turning the PC off at night! The PC can not upgrade with no power. Yup, so obvious it's not worth mentioning. Except when I remember my hotshot tech self troubleshooting the power problem on a PC and the end user plugs the power cord in and the PC starts up. So, turn the Win 7 off at night and Win 10 can't start.
  11. I had one of these Win 10 install upgrades start on a Win 7 PC that was not Win 10 throttled. I avoided any clicks to the Win 10 upgrade window because of previous posts. Just opened Task manager and did an end task on the update. That stopped the update in its tracks. I'm still leaving this Win 7 relatively open however 3035583 has been uninstalled and when it showed up again it was then hidden. This Win 7 is there to see what the updates are doing to Win 7. If another Win 10 upgrade shows up, i"ll use Task manager to stop it and then hide the particular Win 10 upgrade. Just living on the cutting edge, smiles for everyone. Just a thought, in August will there be automatic billing for these rogue W10 upgrades?
  12. Smile on my face today. A little less crap going out the door at the shop with the directive to stop Win 10 updates. A good crapless day!
  13. Yup, no more Windows 10 updates at the shop! It is a small step in the critical mass slippage.
  14. The shop at which I do computer support activities has just changed their update directives. The most outstanding directive is no more updates to Windows 10. Another melted MS ice cube in the great computer ocean. It was a good day at the shop today.
  15. Wow, just recognized the Mac "bomb" icon. LOL. I haven't seen that icon for maybe 20 years. Thanks for the memory.
  16. It seems that MS is not the only crap dealer. With Dropbox installed on 14352, three different browsers black screened. Or maybe it was Win 10 that is the crap enabler. Uninstalled Dropbox and 14352 stabilized. The manual hold down the power off button was the only way to get control back for Win 10. Just a software crap cocktail. Now it's wait and see what else shows up. The MacBook did black screen nicely. No clean install was necessary to get Win 10 back this time. I hope MS makes it to August without black screening the company. Yes, the comedy continues.
  17. Challenging the Crap. MacBook W10 Insider updated to 14352 with no apparent issues. However, I downloaded and installed Dropbox that some people say breaks W10. Just checking to see if Dropbox breaks 14352 or will the protective MacBook not let that happen? ;-) W10 really loves the Apple!
  18. Update to the MS Product/Company Termination phenomenon, 1,800 more employees out the door according to the local paper. Another indication that MS is following the IBM life cycle. Yes, I know that IBM is still in business but it is a shadow of its former self.
  19. Good information. Some people that I talk to just don't want Windows 7 but they have an XP machine. I won't engage in discussions with them in the future. Some acquaintances have Win 10 on their PC's and love it (as compared to Win 8). It's time for me to practice "allowing" while I use my Win 7 and OS X computers. Computer life goes on and will get more fun in August. Bud
  20. Just curious. Is Windows XP considered abandoned software? Is there any reason that XP (COA on the case) can't be updated to a legal Win 7? Just wondering about the update road of XP to Windows 10? Some techs have been telling me that the upgrade path just described is illegal because of the COA on the case. Is that reality or just BS?
  21. Several hundred entries spread over several Windows 10 forums have discussed this issue for the past 10 months. The battery issue is a new wrinkle to the Start Button, etc. Just for fun click the notification icon in the right hand Taskbar. See if the Tablet Mode square is lit. If it is on, click it once to turn it off and see if the Start Button works again. Maybe just toggle it on and off might change something. Or maybe the notification icon doesn't work either. I haven't seen the lock up the taskbar issue under 10586.318 but it may still be there. Definitely haven't seen the issue under Win 10 fast track 14342. Battery, something new to think about. Slow day at the MacBook Win 10 fast track shop. Maybe the staff at MS who are in charge of the Start Button issue have been laid off. Part of the making American computers great again plan. [Hey Bill, "Does that slope look slippery to you? Where's Warren putting his money these days?"]
  22. Some new crap: Insider Windows 10 Update fast track indicated that update 14342 was ready to install. Clicked install. Windows Update say everything was up to date when it realized that the update was already installed. Must be a slow day at the Windows Update circus.
  23. All part of the Microsoft Product Life Termination. End the product lines that were generating profit. Then reduce personnel to keep the bottom line up. Go to bankruptcy when all the profit is squeezed out of the company. Follow the stockholder economic theory. Computer technology and stakeholder economics are of no concern. The computer evolution journey is moving on. One would think that maybe a "small" company like Apple might start making billions. Maybe even Warren would buy a chunk of Apple stock.
  24. In the late 1990's and early 2000's, large mainframe computers went into Product Cycle Termination. IBM was the Microsoft of the computer world at that time. Small computers slowly took over the computer market to bring us to the point that we are at now. What MS is doing now looks a lot like what IBM did then. The results will probably be similar. The computer world did not end, but it did change for the better. Having worked for 30+ years doing mainframe support, it's deja vu all over again. The transition has begun several years ago. I suggest that iPhones, iPads, yes even watches are part of the current transition. Many people have told me that they got rid of their laptops and desktop and only use an iPad now. It has all the apps that they need and the apps work. I've added a large iMac as a stable base computer and it's fully compatible with the iPhone and iPad. All the software that I use runs on one or more of the computers in that family. Microsoft software runs on the iMac as well. I suspect that more and more business computer users will transition to new computer platforms. That's what happened when business users jumped the IBM flag ship. Understand what's happening now from one who lived through it before. I suspect that there are many of us in this forum who experienced the same situation. I just didn't expect to see another major Product Cycle Termination in my lifetime. Maybe I'll be around to see the next computer transition. They seem to be more frequent as time goes by. And computer life will go on and the world will not stop turning. In the meantime, it's fun working and playing with the computer dinosaurs while using some of the new computer technology for everyday needs. It is also fun when I can teach a young person how to turn on their new computer and make it do something productive. Yes, life is good.
  25. Making American computers "Great Again" seems to be the marketing position for products. Why is it necessary to make American computers Great Again? I thought that American computers were already Great. Is there a false premise in the statement of making something Great Again implying that something that is already Great is not Great? Windows 7 is Great. Do you need Win 10 to show that American computers are not Great? Oh, there is a lot of fun in computers and politics. Impressions just keep getting deeper.
