  1. Back on the topic of browsers, has anyone tried running Wine Internet Explorer on Win9x? It uses the Gecko engine like Firefox, Pale Moon, and K-Meleon, and it's pretty lightweight. I'll try it when I get a chance.
  2. I got it to work! I dug deeper into PowerStrip's settings and found a feature that lets me add a custom resolution. I added the 1440x900, rebooted, and was able to select it in the display properties. I'm curious as to what PowerStrip did to the registry to add the resolution, because I tried everything I could think of. Is the fact that I'm using a TV relevant? As far as I know, it functions just like any ordinary LCD monitor, just that it also has TV inputs. My VGA cable does support EDID, if that's what you mean.
  3. Still no dice. sigh... I installed PowerStrip and generated a .inf file from my monitor and installed it. I've attached the file if anyone wants to look at it. Then I completely removed all ATI driver software from my computer (Well, except for the setup files at C:\ATI\SUPPORT\6-2_wme_dd_cp_30314 which also has the modified C9_30314.inf). After rebooting, I installed the ATI driver, but I still can't get 1440x900. The resolutions I have available are 640x480, 800x600, 848x480, 1024x768, 1152x864, 1280x768, 1280x960, 1280x1024. Just like before, when I set a resolution over 1024x768, it pans with a 1024x768 window. Where in the registry can I find what resolutions the monitor and graphics card support? @Goodmaneuver My computer shows that message if I hold a bunch of keys down while the BIOS is loading. It's always done that, and it's not really an issue, but I find the error amusing. ps_mon.inf
  4. Completely uninstalling and reinstalling the driver software added the registry keys, but I am STILL unable to choose 1440x900 as my screen resolution. I don't know what determines the list of resolutions that shows up in the display properties. Going to try hacking an .inf file and try to force it into 1440x900.
  5. By "Reinstall it", do you mean going into Device Manager, removing the device, and then installing it again with the modified .inf? I tried modifying that .inf file, and reinstalling it several times, but it still doesn't add those registry entries for the other resolutions. I'm not sure why. I could maybe create a .reg file to add them manually. What does HKR refer to in that file? I don't really know the structure of .inf files very well.
  6. WMP11 is really slow on XP. I normally just use VLC or Media Player Classic instead of WMP anyway, since they actually have codecs to play most files.
  7. I'm currently using a D-Link AirPlus XtremeG PCI card that supports WPA2 on Windows 98 SE. I posted about it before. I also have a Realtek RTL8185, but I wouldn't recommend it because the client software is garbage and crashes frequently.
  8. Has anyone found a solution for this yet? I have a Radeon 9550 in my machine, and can't seem to get out of 1024x768 mode, despite my monitor having a resolution of 1440x900. If I set a higher resolution than 1024x768, it does that stupid panning, even though my monitor has more than enough space to display the whole thing. 1440x900 shows up in the slider on Windows XP, but not on Windows 98.
  9. I'd like to see someone compile the latest K-Meleon for Win9x. I like K-Meleon because it's lightweight and uses native Win32 controls instead of that Mozilla XUL nonsense. Not sure how up to date and compatible it is with all of the latest HTML5 and JavaScript standards.
  10. I seem to remember a piece of software I found a while back that allowed you to just send a document to another computer on the network and have it automatically print from that machine. I wonder if it's possible to set up a printer on a Raspberry Pi or something and use that remotely. I actually had a Canon i850 printer that was in regular use in my house from 2002-2015. It finally stopped working after 13 years, and the ink was getting a bit hard to find. Of course, it was compatible with Windows 98.
  11. I've had trouble in the past when using both the Sysinternals NTFS driver and KernelEx at the same time. The system would randomly freeze or BSOD at unexpected moments, but disabling one or the other worked fine.
  12. I wonder how hard it would be to create unofficial VirtualBox drivers for Windows 9x. VirtualBox (along with the guest additions) is open source, so it should just be a matter of modifying the drivers to use only Windows 98 features. https://www.virtualbox.org/browser/vbox/trunk/src/VBox/Additions/WINNT?order=name
  13. I have ACPI enabled on my computer, so I guess it's already using HLT anyway.
  14. While Windows NT based operating systems use the HLT instruction while the CPU is idle, Windows 95 and 98 (and maybe Windows ME) do a busy loop instead, which tends to use more power and run hotter. There are a few programs available that are able to run HLT instructions to sleep the CPU when it is idle, and supposedly make Windows 9x run cooler. http://www.benchtest.com/cooler.html I'm wondering if anyone has experience with these programs on actual hardware, and knows if they are worth it to save power and reduce CPU temps.
  15. Why, you could even do that with Windows 95! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pm33KB2Th9M
  16. I tried PCem, but it ran way too slow to even be close to usable. Even VMware without 3D hardware acceleration is faster than this. It's a shame they don't take advantage of VT-x hardware support for virtualization, which would make this actually usable on most hardware.
  17. I recommend VMware Player. It runs almost as well as Virtual PC, and has guest additions so you get 32-bit color, resolution switching, and mouse integration. I haven't heard of PCem. I'll give it a try.
  18. Honestly, I'd just install a Win 7 VM to reduce the hassle. It may or may not be possible to compile it on Visual Studio 2013. You can try if you want. There's a step by step guide here. https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/src/+/master/docs/windows_build_instructions.md Just warning you, the code is really freaking huge, so expect to wait hours for it to download and compile. Good luck.
  19. I'd rather keep things simple and not replace sysdm.cpl. Showing that new hardware dialog box when a new device was added is simply how Windows 98 does things. After I've plugged in all of my flash drives into the machine at least once, I never have to bother with seeing that when I plug one in.
  20. Thanks. That patch fixed it. I knew about the 2.1 GHz limit, but I didn't realize that it had problems with 1 GHz Intel chips. It's working fine, but the only piece on hardware I have drivers for is the Nvidia GeForce2 graphics card, so I can't do much else besides gaming without sound.
  21. I had an extra 160 GB hard drive lying around, so I decided to install Windows 95 (original RTM version) on my Dell Dimension 4300 just for kicks. This computer has a 1.5 GHz Pentium 4 (Willamette), and 512 GB of PC133 RAM. I was able to install Windows 95 okay, but when I booted it up, I got the dreaded "Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer." message. However, my BIOS has a way to lower the CPU speed, so I changed that setting from "normal" to "compatible", and it was able to boot Windows 95. The only problem is that it runs very slow like that, and I'd like to be able to use the full speed of the CPU. I've installed Windows 95 in virtual machines on 3.4 GHz processors, so I'm not sure why it has trouble with a 1.5 GHz Pentium 4.
  22. It's been almost a year since the last commit on GitHub.
  23. A lot of websites these days put all of their icons into a font instead of using individual image files, so completely disabling webfonts will cause those icons not to display.
  24. What version of Git are you using, may I ask? Does it require any KernelEx tweaks?
  25. Oh, nice! In all my years of using Windows, I never once knew about DOSKEY. This version has tab completion which will help a lot. I'll also check out those other tools. I did also find a bash shell for Windows that doesn't depend on Cygwin or MSYS, and it works pretty well. http://win-bash.sourceforge.net/ Has anyone gotten any version of Git to run on Windows 9x?
