  1. Check to make sure that you have the latest video drivers. If you do, uninstall and reinstall them. The video drivers are what allow you to enter standby and hibernation, so if they've become corrupt, then you might end up with the problem you describe.
  2. Have fun! Just be careful with nLite. If you don't know what you're doing, you can run into more troubles than you think... Welcome to MSFN!
  3. Have you made sure that the zipfldr.dll is registered? regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\zipfldr.dll
  4. That's pretty much what sells software today though. The common consumer will usually buy something based on ease-of-use (unless they need a specific feature). If Microsoft can make Windows Media Player easier for people to use, then it's a worthy investment in time. My parents have a difficult time finding things in WMP 10 (the default color scheme is horribly done - very hard on the eyes when it comes to reading the menus), so I've gone ahead and used the Classic skin. It doesn't really help that the WMP window itself doesn't look like all the rest of Windows, since people who are learning things like consistency. It looks to me like WMP11 will fit in nicely with the default Vista theme. As for features... I use Winamp 5 for my music player, not because it's updated often or has new features all the time, but because of the media library. It's easy for me to navigate, and it's been there since V5.0 (current version is V5.1.1.2).
  5. Reasons why? Someone else who comes here and reads this isn't going to gain anything but your opinion. This is why I don't like threads like this... people come and simply say what their favorite is without explaining why. There was another thread like this somewhere else on the forums (not the one in the polls section) that actually contained a good feature set of each browser and the pros and cons for each. Maybe if I'm bored I'll try to dig it up...
  6. Did you read any of the forum rules yet? MSFN Forum Rules XP Forum Rules I know I must sound like a jerk pointing them out to you, but your post is very very difficult to read. Not only that, the title doesn't give any clue as to what the problem is. If you want people to help you, you need: ( a ) to make your title clear, and ( b ) your post easy enough to read that people can get the drift of what you're actually trying to say. That being said, read through the XP Forum Rules. There are links to my troubleshooting guide and the Malware Prevention forum (it also deals with removal). You should be able to find the information you need to help remove whatever nasties are on your computer from there.
  7. Good luck with the exams. I'm not sure what kind of math it is, but if I can help in any way, let me know (I'm in 4th year Engineering Physics).
  8. Well.. I found a way around this. It's a bit easier than the above mentioned guide, but follows the same guidelines. 1) Make AIO CD as usual with everything else. This means everthing works except Firefox in ERD. 2) Open .ISO in UltraISO and delete /ERD1/SYSTEM32/FIREFOX and /ERD1/SYSTEM32/FIREFOXPROFILE 3) Copy Firefox and FirefoxProfile folders from original ERD 2005 ISO into above mentioned /SYSTEM32 folder 4) Set properties of AIO ISO to allow lowercase filenames. 5) Save. Done. Now you've got everything as you want it, and a working Firefox under ERD 2005. The difference between the guide and this is that the above guide prepares Firefox before making the AIO CD/DVD, while my way fixes Firefox after everything is complete. Hope this helps someone else!
  9. Copernic WinKey. It's out of development, but a Google search will find it for you.
  10. Sent the PM... but then found it on my own. Thanks anyways. Now I've got my XP SP2, ERD 2005, and Acronis Multi-boot CD... I'm happy as a clam now.
  11. No problem. I know this because I actually did it to one of the first computers we had... it had a SoundBlaster 16 Pro I think, until it met its demise (aka my mom's big stereo speakers).
  12. In my opinion, the NFS series is no longer a racing game. It's a game where you have to upgrade your car here and there to get more points and money. The "races" are rediculously easy to anyone who plays real racing games (*cough* Gran Turismo 3/4 *cough*)... I rented NFS:U2 this weekend and I was able to get 300 reputation points on just about every race there was (meaning at least 5 second lead on most races). Not to mention that in all recent NFS games there's that damned annoying slow car boost. In Gran Turismo (and I think Forza Motorsports) this is disabled by default. It's almost like real life racing - you crash and it gets a helluva lot harder to win.
  13. From what I gather, you've got your stereo speakers plugged directly into your computer? If you're doing that, you're running the risk of blowing whatever amp is on your soundcard. Computer sound cards were never designed to drive large stereo speakers directly. Any speakers over 30W have their own built in amplifiers to modulate the signal coming from your sound card. Buy a new reciever or amplifier. You'll solve your problem and protect your new hardware that way.
  14. Wierd... That's all I have to say.
  15. Hahah.... guilty as charged...

ROFLMAO.... Nice... didn't see that one coming.
  17. Have a look at Hamachi. It's a freeware application that creates a virtual LAN over the internet. No port forwarding to deal with, no nothing. Once you've got that installed on both computers and they're on the same channel, you should be able to access each others' shares (including shared printers).
  18. Glad to hear you got all your files back. BartPE is indeed a lifesaver. As for the Common Files folder, check under msconfig to see if anything is listed there. (Start->Run->msconfig). If you're not sure what an entry is, Google it. Disable anything that isn't critical or you don't find useful. As for defragging, check out DIRMS and buzzsaw. They're both freeware tools that do a better job at defragmenting your hard drive than the default defragmenter. Hope that helps!!!
  19. Heheh... we had a little bit of snow here in Vancouver just last week. It's odd, since we usually don't get any snow, but it made me about 2 hours late for work last tuesday... 2 cm of snow and people forget how to drive... On the other hand, it's a good sign for the ski season. Happy holidays everyone!
  20. To keep up with Vista, probably not all that much money actually. I've heard of Vista playing happy on systems such as PIII 600's with 256MB of RAM. If you want all the fancy eye-candy of glass and such, then you'll need a hardware upgrade, yes.
  21. This topic has come up time and time again. There is no single "best" browser. Each person has their own preferences. I like Opera. Others like Firefox. My parents like Maxthon. My girlfriend likes IE. As for those people who b***h and moan about spyware - Spybot S&D and SpywareBlaster. That's all you ever need if you're running IE under XP SP2. End of story.
  22. AutoIt could do this for you. You'd have to learn how to script it for you, but it would do what you want in the end.
  23. The conflict with PostScript fonts makes some sense, since PDF's are simply a PS file with a bit of a wrapper around them. Is there maybe one font in particular that you use that triggers it? Maybe you could devise a systematic method of testing this...
  24. Ok... I've followed that guide, but I still get an error when I try to boot from the Acronis Loader. I've placed bcdw.csm in the \BOOT\Modules folder, and edited my cdshell.ini to contain the following two lines in their appropriate places: print "4) Acronis True Image \n" if $lastKey == key[4]; then bcdw /BOOT/Acronis/TruImg.WBT Screenshot That screenshot is after I've pressed "4". I'm using the latest version of CDShell (2.1.6 I believe) and the latest BCDW as well. Any ideas?
  25. You are free to discuss how to do this, as it is possible with completely legal methods (such as the one described by Fencer128). However, discussion of cracks or patches is not allowed on MSFN. Just FYI, I've done this with several games of my own, so I know that the method works. Not to mention that you get a bit of a performance boost as well.
