But that's exactly what I said... it's scary as hell the first time you do it... but it's worth it in the end. There really isn't all that much that you can screw up, now that I think about it. All the plugs are uni-directional, meaning you can't plug them in backwards, and the golden rule is be gentle. The only part of the computer where you might need a semi-considerable amount of force is the RAM sticks. Everything else should be easy to plug together. Trust me... it's much easier than it seems. Hmm... I should find an old computer that I can take apart and then put back together just for demonstration...

Good work rnielsen151! See? You've got a much much better system there, that's a lot cheaper. The only part that you've gotta do is put that bad boy together.

Wow... that's quite a story to tell... I'm glad to hear that you're doing better now though. Its funny... even though I've never met the people on this forum in real life (with the exception of one), I'd probably still be very moved if I found out that someone had passed away. It may not be a group of friends that go hang out on friday nights here, but it's still a community.

Computer HAng WHile completing dota (frozenthrone)

This should be under the Gamers Hangout... Moved -
Hope you have a good one!!! Keep up the good work on WPI! I've been meaning to get around to using it, but I never have..

If I may make a suggestion... build the computer yourself! Buy all the parts that you need from NewEgg (since you're in the states), and when they arrive, put the whole thing together yourself. I did it myself for the first time last year, and I'll admit, it's a little nerve-racking the first time, but after that, it's a piece of cake. There are several people here in the Hardware Hangout section that would be willing to help you get the best parts for your money, and also help with assembly instructions. Not only will you learn something - you'll have the pride of having built it yourself, and you'll save yourself some money.

It's not a typo... The Mindows Project It's meant to be a very small and functional install of Windows. You could have found that by searching yourself...

I'm not entirely sure about Norton Ghost, since I haven't used it. You should give that a try and let us know. It would be useful for people who do use Ghost as their backup tool.

For the hidemenubar.zip file, check the MD5 of the file. It should be: cc715f9932430dd3a0fc015df2ecbb3a For an MD5 summer, go to www.md5summer.com. Chances are that your download was corrupted. I just tried downloading the file, and opening it in WinRar 3.51. No problems thus far...

Whenever I use Deep Freeze, I create a new partition and mount it to the My Documents folder of the user. That way, it's not frozen, and the user doesn't have to worry about separate partitions to save data to, etc etc etc. Another advantage to this is that by using the Acronis True Image Rescue CD, you can create an image of the "frozen" system. If ever anything goes foobared beyond what DeepFreeze can do, then you can just restore the frozen system and the documents will still be where they're meant to be.

You're right. In versions 7 and below I believe, the pagefile and hibernation files were not excluded from the actual archive. True Image 8 and 9 are a bit smarter.

The WRT54G is the version that everyone talks about with modded firmware. The firmware must be version 1-4 only! Version 5 firmware is different and cannot be modded... so send it back. I've got one at home and it's running absolutely rock solid. Wifibox rules. I'd like to get the Talisman 1.1 firmware, but it's pay-for only. www.linksysinfo.org

You should just be able to install Windows 2000 onto the second drive. The Windows bootloader will allow you to choose between the two OSes on startup. No extra software or modifications needed.

@atomizer - Yup! That pretty much sums it up.

grafx1... no doubt. That box is sick!

You've got a number of options. If your Bit Torrent client has an auto-load function, then all you need is to be able to access your file structure. You could set up an FTP server on your computer and transfer your file into that folder via FTP. Another option for the above situation would be to use Hamachi. It's a little less of a hassle to set up, but it requires that the computer you're at also has Hamachi installed (while an FTP connection only requires IE). If you want complete control over your desktop, any VNC solution (as nas8060 suggested) would do you fine. If you're using XP Professional, then Remote Desktop is probably a better solution, since it's a lot faster than VNC. Hope that helps!

Your acronis image does not use any more space for the pagefile. It's created as a zero-byte file within the archive. You'll never need to worry about the pagefile or hibernation file when it comes to Acronis True Image.

Well... you obviously didn't search at all. If you had taken an extra 5 seconds to look at one of the stickies at the top of this section, you'd have your answer. XP SP2 Slipstreaming and Bootable CD Guide Be sure you follow the new posting rules from now on. Title edited Topic Closed

It's probably to supply power to the USB ports. Each powered port should be able to deliver 2.5W (5V @ 500mA), while the PCMCIA standard gives exactly those values as the maximum power that the PCMCIA port can supply. http://www.pcmcia.org/faq.htm

[Help] - default xp pro login password after 42days expired?
Zxian replied to trickytwista's topic in Windows XP
It sounds like either: a) Some malware has changed the password on the account or B) There's an error in her account (some form of corruption) You could just go for the simple fix of deleting her account (not deleting her files/folders) and then recreating the account with the same name. All the settings and documents should stay there. For future record, all accounts should have a password on them, regardless of admin or limited. -
Fairly feature rich? Talk out-of-the-box experience, since that's what most people know about. The only people I know who actually use extensions for Firefox are people who are semi-tech-savvy. The rest of the people have just come along for the ride, and run plain-jane Firefox. Opera has most of the features that common people add extensions for anyways: - Proper tabbed browsing (target="_blank" --> New tab, not new window) - Mouse Gestures - Wand (password manager) - Smooth Scrolling - Fully customizable keyboard shortcuts Sure, you don't have the possibility of expansion like you do with extensions, but they're a double-edged sword. Most of the crashes that people get in Firefox are from either poorly written extensions, or conflicts between two extensions. I know you and I have had other debates about this, but I thought I'd defend the Opera standpoint once more...

I'd go with the lifetime warranty card. Do you actually use firewire at all? I've got a port on my laptop, but I've never used it for anything.

Total Througput = Frequency/Timings (give or take a little) The timings there is the sum of the timings. You'll definatly see a difference between 2-2-2-5 and 3-3-3-8 RAM, but as for the greater performance boost, you're better off having a little bit more laxed timings, and a higher frequency. This is not only good for your RAM, but also because the bandwidth of your entire motherboard will increase as well.

@LiquidSage - I completely agree. I'd be nice to be able to make ISO files without needing to use a physical CD from Acronis products or the like. If it makes you feel any better, I don't think it's silly. Sorry to say, I don't know of any such programs...
