  1. Wow... that's a really long list... Just for the record, I wouldn't recommend disabling the DNS Cache service. Like you said, with it disabled, your computer has to query your ISP's DNS server every time you access web material. You end up using more bandwidth and slowing things down. As for network location awareness, it's not just for ICS. Its the service that "tells" Windows the status of your network connections. If you disable it, you'll end up having a two minute wait until you go from "Acquiring Network Address" to "Connected". Just my two cents. Thanks for the input though.
  2. I'm used to the Shift+Ctrl+Click myself, since I'm on my laptop 95% of the time, and there is no middle mouse button... There's a lot more to Opera than what meets the eye. I'm still finding that I'm discovering new settings and options even after having used it for a number of months now.
  3. Do you and your neighbour have the same ISP? If so, then that rules out any problems from their end of things. Since bearshare seems to be having troubles as well, I don't think it's an IE issue. Just to be sure though, try downloading the files with Firefox or Opera (both freeware alternative browsers) to see if the same (or similar) error occurs. Can you ping other websites without troubles? Google (www.google.com) or MSFN (www.msfn.org) are two that you can try to ping to see if you get the same problem. You could also try uninstalling and reinstalling your network card. You can do this through the device manager: Right-click My Computer->Properties->Hardware->Device Manager Click on the plus sign beside "Network adaptors" to expand the tree. Right-click on each of the network adaptors that are listed and select uninstall. Once you've done this for all of the network adaptors, restart your computer. Windows should reinstall the drivers by itself after this.
  4. Search for "virtual cd-rw". It's the first hit. See that little white box at the top of the forums? You didn't use it.
  5. %appdata% is actually just a variable for the location of the Application Data folder. Do a search for "Application Data" on your D: drive to find what you want.
  6. First off... if your Longhorn isn't bootable, then it isn't legal. If you had the legal copy, you'd know to contact Microsoft about information regarding that. No more discussion about how to make that work, or else this topic gets closed. As for the live XP CD, no there isn't any way of doing what you want. UBCD and BartPE are good alternatives that still stick with the windows base, but they're nothing like live Linux distros. Winternals ERD Commander is another live environment that uses Windows as its framework, but it's designed more with recovery in mind.
  7. What exactly did you do with nLite? Does this happen if the computer has a regular XP install?
  8. I think with just XP, you're out of luck anyways. AFAIK, the XP setup re-initializes the USB devices partway through the installation process, thereby loosing connection to the source files (or something of that sort). I think it's been discussed before... You could also look into RIS installations. They can be installed without CD-ROMs.
  9. You can either: 1) Right-click -> Open in background page 2) Shift+Ctrl+Click 3) Middle-click on link

    XPlode Wiki

Hey Wraith, Any chances of this being revived? XPlode has become my new post-install method of choice, and I'd like to make it easier for others to learn. It'd probably help with new users complaining about documentation.
  11. Thanks Jeremy.
  12. Have you tried installing the Network install of SP2? http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en Did you make this recovery CD yourself from a basic Windows install CD?
  13. No, not really. If you read his sig, he's got a 64-bit processor. This means that his computer could handle and access a lot more than 4GB of RAM. A larger hard drive does not necessarily increase fragmentation. If you have a set pagefile size, then the pagefile can't fragment. @ripken204 - You've got 2GB of RAM. Chances are you'll never run into troubles (even if you play BF2). Set the pagefile to system managed and leave it be.

  15. First off... THANK YOU! You're one of the few new members who I've seen actually take the time to figure out the problem for themselves. Thank you. Now that that's been said - have you tried right-clicking and saving the MP3 file to your computer? Do you have any firewall or other security software installed? I would try to use your computer on another internet connection, just to rule out your ISP. If it works elsewhere, then you know the problem isn't yours. I'm sure that there's a solution to this. We've just got to find it.

  18. Thanks for this atomizer. Member projects and work are always encouraged.
  19. Please don't double post. You'll get better answers with just one topic. Topic Closed
  20. Your question is about a network device... so it should go in Networks, Internet and Security. That's probably why you might not have been getting any answers. Topic Moved to Networks, Internet and Security.

  22. Whoops... I'm having a bit of a dyslexic day today... sorry about that.
  23. Searched for "best compression" and got this as the first hit. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=50310 To repeat myself - WinRAR overall.
  24. Like I said, you won't notice anything until you go to uninstall a program whose install package was located in that folder. Since Windows won't be able to find it, you'll get a message asking you to locate the install package manually. Another option you can try is to resize your system partition using a third party partition manager. Acronis Disk Director is the one that I use, and so far it's never let me down (*touch wood*). Just as a general note, you'll always want some amount of free space on your system partition. I've found that once the free space falls below 15% or so, you take a performance hit in almost everything that you do.
