1. Thanks mr.brownstone.
2. Hehe... some other physicists here on the forums! Just out of curiosity, what are you (or did you) study when you were at university? Does that relate to your jobs now?
3. Nice Desktop's everyone. @mr.brownstone - Any chance of getting those icons that are in your picture? The ones of the displays that are on and off? TIA.
4. Thanks for the upgrades...
5. To get your XP Setup to ask for the CD-Key, then simply leave that part of the WINNT.SIF file blank. Same goes for the Administrator password. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "Ask for Admin" though. As for selecting the software to be installed, this can be done with either XPlode or WPI. I personally use XPLode, but to be entirely honest, I've never tried WPI. Other users say it's the best thing since sliced bread. I suggest you try out both. (Hint - for XPLode, you need to use the XPlode-SelectInstall.xml file) No idea about the last part... And like net_user said, this should be in the UA forums. Please try to find the correct forum in the future. Topic Moved
6. This fits better in the Software Hangout... Moved
7. Moved to Windows XP x64 forum.
8. Moved to Networks, Internet and Security.
9. I doubt that it's a virus, but trickytwista has the right idea for a first diagnosis of the problem.
10. Are you trying to make an ad-block type hosts file? You're blocking quite a few major sites there, and disabling the DNS Client service will just slow down your browsing.
11. The topic of Dell OEM slipstreaming has been answered before. Please don't bump old threads unnecessarily. Topic Closed

i need big help

Like I said in the other post - if this is for unattended installs, then post there. If it's just a matter of installing it, then post in the Software Hangout. Your original post (in both threads) is difficult to understand. You need to describe your problem in a way so that everyone else can understand what it is that you're trying to do. This is the last "help me" post before a warning. Topic Closed
14. Original post slightly edited. Just grammatical changes. Please try to use proper grammar when posting. The original post was one big long sentence, which makes it harder for users to read what it is that you're trying to say. As for your question, I agree with cluberti that Gentoo is a bit hard for a beginner to pick up. I would recommend SuSe or Ubuntu. Both are relatively easy to set up and have good documentation on the web.
15. It's actually not all that high level. I'm in the first quantum course, and my girlfriend's been doing the second course... now that's complicated stuff. There's a famous quote from Richard Feynman, a famous Physicist who did a lot of his studying in QM: "I think I can safely say that nobody understands Quantum Mechanics."
16. Yeah, I just had a midterm on that stuff last week. Quantum is pretty interesting stuff. If you didn't quite understand that last bit about "collapsing the wave function", in QM (Quantum Mechanics), you are always talking about the wave function, which describes the probability of finding a particle at a particular location and time (systems change over time). Notice, that this is a probability - not a guarantee as to what will happen. The probability is determined by what the system started out with (a measurement at some point in time) and the time that has passed. (Think of the fact that if you roll a die 6 times you "should" expect to see one of the numbers once each - but that doesn't always happen) When you go and take a measurement, you collapse the wave function, since you know that the particle was "here" and "now", with a probability of 100%. This changes the way that the particle will behave from that point on. The fact that the parrticle seems to go through both slits is due to a concept called the particle-wave duality, where we can actually describe everything as both a wave and a particle at the same time. This is what people refer to when they talk about photons - particles of light. These photons actually have momentum, which we can theoretically "collect" and use to move spacecraft with large solar "sails", much like conventional sails "collect" the momentum of the wind. Just a bit of "basic" quantum for you to chew on. B)
17. That sounds like a dud router to me. Something with the hardware is wrong. I'd just keep bothering Linksys (call them every day) to get an RMA - just make sure that they don't send you the v5 firmware! Be absolutely insistant that they send you either v4 or the WRT54GL (which is essentially the WRT54G v4).
18. @Doc Symbiosis - I wouldn't recommend doing this... killing explorer is a bit extreme for re-sorting your start menu...

This is an unattended install question, so the other topic is in the right place. No cross-posting please. It doesn't help anybody. Topic Closed

Running an installer for a program shouldn't be that difficult. Simply double-click it and it will go. If you're looking at trying to get this installed silently or unattendedly, then you should search (and post) in the appropriate forums. Welcome to MSFN. Topic closed
21. I'd like to join the bandwagon as well... zxian360<at>hotmail<dot>com Thanks in advance!!
22. I'd like to try to keep this thread as clean as possible, so only on topic discussions here please. But to answer your question, I'm not sure how much more weight the 9-cell battery adds. For me, it's carried in my backpack and still weighs less than my average textbook, so I don't really mind all that much. For me, it's the full-sized keyboard, and the larger screen that does it for me. My dad's got one of the "ultra-portable" Sony laptops, and I have troubles typing on it.
23. Like bigpoppapump said, the WRT54G v1-v4 were good routers, but then Linksys decided to go with VXworks (or whatver) for the firmware. I've got the v2 on my desk with the 7 dBi antennae, and it's fantastic. On the other hand, the default Linksys firmware sucks... but with HyperWRT+tofu13c (link) it's great.
24. I agree that the auto-complete www.-.com and www.-.net are nice features that would make Opera even better, but there are ways around them. For example, if you wanted a quick way to get to www.msfn.org, then you could simply bookmark the site and in Opera, set the nickname to "msfn". Then, when you type "msfn" into the address bar, Opera will go to the full URL. I've got "news" as the nickname to http://news.google.com. Nice, quick, and simple. It also lets you make easier text-based shortcuts to big-long complicated URLs (Gmail's redirect for example) It's just a little bit of a different way of browsing. I'll admit it takes a couple of days to get used to, but I find it much more intuitive now.
