Right! Of course, I know that the browser checks for extension updates via the pref extensions.update.url. That was exactly what I restored in Mypal 68 months ago, described in my article Restoring the manual and automatic update function for extensions in Mypal 68.13.3b. But, I mainly use New Moon 28, and there is no support for webextensions at all. BTW, I never activated the automatic updates in any @roytam1's browsers. And TBH, I never thought Serpent 55 would look for webextension updates for a legacy extension. But as I already mentioned, I can make my mod/fork such unique as I did in the case of my fork Check My IP Address & Location 1.3. Then, updates won't be found for it any longer. PS: And the more I think about it , the more I am now inclined to do just that. One more thing @VistaLover, I totally forgot to say thanks for your deeper insights on that matter!

@Mathwiz I have thought about your problem again and could imagine that you may have installed the uBO webextension in the past. Could I be right? In any case, I will examine this issue in my Serpent 55 installation the next days. If, contrary to my expectations, I find that Serpent 55 tries to automatically update the legacy extension uBlock Origin to the latest compatible webextension, I can make my fork so unique that it can never be identified as uBlock Origin again. Then, it couldn't be automatically updated anymore by whatever mechanism. The updating of my fork/mod should only be done by a manual editing of its code inside the xpi file unless gorhill would decide to support the legacy extension again which, however, will probably never be the case. PS: Please, test your issue in a fresh, clean profile and report here! Thanks!

@Mathwiz Very strange! In my latest release uBlock Origin 1.16.4.31, I have removed the auto-update function of the internal list of all preselected filter lists and the updateURL inside the install.rdf file. Therefore, my fork can't actually initiate any auto-update actions. Did you install uBlock Origin 1.16.4.31 after a complete cleaning of all remnants as I described in my article? Very important is to delete the ublock0.sqlite file in the profile subfolder extension-data before installing uBO. And don't install uBO on top of an already existing installation! It won't work properly. I personally do not use the auto-update function of the Add-ons Manager in @roytam1's browser editions. All update processes are done by me manually. Therefore, this never happened to me.

My Browser Builds (Part 5)
AstroSkipper replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
One just doesn't do that. One doesn't put others first in order to hide behind them. You asked for moderation here and nobody else did. So, for better or worse, you will have to take a stand on your own statements. And if someone says or advises you something, then that has nothing to do with an attack. That's simply ridiculous and nonsense once again. -
You are absolutely right. In any case, @cmalex deserves recognition and credit for compiling flavours of CPython 3.8.x/3.9.x and much other things.

My Browser Builds (Part 5)
AstroSkipper replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
No, this would be off-topic, too. We talked only about Youtube Downloaders and web interfaces for downloading YouTube videos. We didn't talk about persons having a Youtube-DL compile for WinXP. You should rather think first and only then demand such actions. @Dave-H Please move the discussion about YouTube Downloaders to my new thread YouTube under Windows XP - Downloaders, players and browser support if you think it is necessary! Thanks in advance! -
YouTube Downloaders still working under Windows XP Here are some recommendations for YouTube Downloaders still working under Windows XP (and presumably under Windows Vista, too): yt-dlp for Windows XP with a CPU which is equipped with an instruction set of SSE2 or higher. Credits to @nicolaasjan. youtube-dl for Windows XP with a CPU which is equipped with an instruction set of SSE only. Credits to @nicolaasjan. 3D Youtube Downloader (free of charge). The version I am using is now 1.22.2. Starting with this version or one before, this downloader now uses the yt-dlp provided by @nicolaasjan. YouTube Downloader HD 3.7.0.0 (free of charge). There are two versions, an installer and a portable one. These are the last XP-compatible versions. This downloader does not use yt-dlp or youtube-dl. Youtube-dl GUI 0.4 (free of charge). When calling up the executable youtube-dl-gui.exe the first time, a folder youtube-dlg will be created under Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data where you have to replace the file youtube-dl.exe by @nicolaasjan's XP-compatible yt-dlp file. Be aware to keep the original file name! Allavsoft Video Downloader Converter (commercial). The version I am using is 3.25.3.8409 but there are newer ones like for example 3.26.1.8768. Inside the main folder, you have to replace both files youtube-dl.exe and yt-dlp_x86.exe by @nicolaasjan's XP-compatible ones. Be aware to keep the original file names! ytBATCH for Windows XP - A fork of ytBatch by @AstroSkipper which is a YouTube video and audio downloader script (actually rather a batch script ensemble). And these are by no means all the YouTube Downloaders that still work under Windows XP. So, there is no need to watch YouTube videos inside browsers under Windows XP on weak computers, although this is of course possible, too. Cheers, AstroSkipper

YouTube under Windows XP - Downloaders, players and browser support This thread is meant to collect and provide all necessary information about YouTube using in Windows XP. As far as I can see, most information here in MSFN spread over various threads, in many cases rather unstructured and not easy to find. I would like to put an end to that. For months, I have been intensively studying YouTube and its still existing functionality in terms of Windows XP. And I can already say that YouTube is still fully functional under Windows XP. But first, thanks to two members of MSFN who are partly responsible for this, @nicolaasjan and @Reino. What did they do for us? @nicolaasjan provides XP-compatible forks of the most recent youtube-dl and yt-dlp releases which are recommended replacements for the old, depreciated ones or the new ones which are no longer working under Windows XP. On the other hand, @Reino provides XP-compatible (and SSE-compatible!) forks of the well-known tool ffmpeg whose more recent versions actually do not work anymore under Windows XP for years. With these programs, yt-dlp and ffmpeg, it is possible to stream or download YouTube videos, convert them, include subtitles (or lyrics) and so on, all in Windows XP. This is no longer possible with the old, official XP-compatible versions of youtube-dl and yt-dlp, and the new releases of ffmpeg. Last but not least, @cmalex deserves recognition and credit for compiling flavours of CPython 3.8.x/3.9.x and much other things that made the development of new releases such as yt-dlp possible at all. Thanks all for your contributions! More about all that in later posts. Feel free to post here software recommendations, tips, experiences, opinions and so on regarding the topic of this thread! In any case, all about YouTube under Windows XP can be considered on-topic here in this thread. Greetings from Germany, AstroSkipper

My Browser Builds (Part 5)
AstroSkipper replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Here are the subfolders: And their content: And as you can see I replaced both files, ffmpeg.exe and ffprobe.exe, by more recent XP-compatible ones. If I modify something, it has to make sense. I've just remembered how I did it with the directories. When calling up the executable youtube-dl-gui.exe the first time, a folder youtube-dlg will be created under Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data. There is a file settings.json which can be edited to specify a different folder for the youtube-dl.exe file. I copied then the folder youtube-dlg into the main programme folder and set this new location in the settings.json file (inside the folder Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data, of course). -

No problem! But the proof is in the pudding, and we all know that, right? BTW, all YouTube Downloaders based on the files yt-dlp.exe and/or youtube-dl.exe you can download in these days contain versions of these files which are no longer XP-compatible. That leads to such an error message "yt-dlg.exe is not a valid Win32 application". Therefore, such versions have to be replaced by your XP-compatible releases for using under Windows XP. -

Unfortunately, the fork thereof will not work on Windows XP (is 64bit)... Right! Youtube-dl GUI is no longer maintained but the last version 0.4 works like a charm under Windows XP Professional 32-bit with the help of your yt-dlp release. Here are some screenshots: And here is a screenshot of the downloaded files including subtitle: Therefore. I can't confirm your statement. Maybe, you forgot to replace the file youtube-dl.exe inside the youtube-dlg folder by your XP-compatible yt-dlp.exe file. -

My Browser Builds (Part 5)
AstroSkipper replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
I was aware of that. I used only uBO but some ads would slip through If uBO doesn't block certain ads, then you should check the filter lists you are using. A suitable combination and selection of good filter lists is very important, and additionally, you can create own rules. No need for an additional adblocker. If AdBlocker Ultimate can block some ads which uBO can't do, then it is only a problem of missing filters. -

@chermany4ever When I am back at my desktop computer, I will give you some recommendations for XP-compatible YouTube Downloaders, which are using the programmes youtube-dl.exe and yt-dlp.exe, only for more convenient use. -
It was just a typo in my article, which I already corrected. The maxVersion in the install.rdf was of course correctly set by me to 32.*. And frankly, I would never set a maxVersion to 32.0 inside an install.rdf file. That usually does not make any sense. But thanks for your hint!

My Browser Builds (Part 5)
AstroSkipper replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
That's absolutely true. The less, the more. Using only one adblocker is mandatory. A combination I am using is indeed uBO+ηMatrix. Works great and has been successfully applied by me for many years. And just for clarification, ηMatrix is not an adblocker but a point-and-click matrix-based firewall for UXP-based browsers, with many privacy-enhancing tools. I also prefer the programmes youtube-dl.exe and yt-dlp.exe (again thanks to @nicolaasjan for his XP releases) but inside of YouTube Downloaders for more convenient use. And I have a whole collection of such tools that still run under Windows XP. -
You're welcome! I will examine this more deeply. Maybe, you are right, and the filter list "Spam404" is indeed a bit outdated and has therefore been replaced by the filter list "Phishing URL Blocklist" in the webextensions of uBO. We will see. I will also check this later. With all this, it is always very important to make sure that new lists are really compatible with uBlock Origin Legacy.

The filter list "filters.txt" with the title "uBlock filters" loads all the other lists "filters-202x.txt" where x is an integer from 0 to 4. They all form a single filter list with the title "uBlock filters". What is there not to understand? If you want to have a deeper understanding of all these things, then you need to consult the sources I provided in my previous posts and you should examine the filter lists themselves.

The filter list with the title "uBlock filters" contains filters optimised for uBlock, to be used along EasyList. Here is a link for more information: https://github.com/uBlockOrigin/uAssets To get information about each list, you have to look inside them. New filters from 2024 will be stored in the list "filters-2024.txt". Here is a quotation from inside the list: Which optimised folders? The "Optimized" filter lists are simply optimised versions of already existing ones. No more, no less. You can find them on the website Filterlists together with a description.

Hello @Amigafever! I increased the maxVersion only to 32.* but it should install on Pale Moon 33 beta, too. The maxVersion is not that important as, for example, the minVersion. BTW, you can easily increase it yourself inside the install.rdf file. If my mod is working in the coming versions Pale Moon 33.x which of course has to be confirmed first, I will change the maxVersion to 33.* in my next update.

Can you elaborate on these changes? What are the first two lists, and what are the optimized ones? I use the last official Ublock legacy, and Easylist and Easyprivacy work just fine, or so it seems. Hello @Octopuss! The lists "filters-2023.txt" and "filters-2024.txt" are new lists which are automatically loaded by the main filter list "filters.txt". This list can be found in the Filter lists tab with the title "uBlock filters". All of these filter lists are normally supplied by the xpi file by default and loaded internally. In the old beta xpi file of uBlock Origin 1.16.4.31b2, there were only the lists "filters.txt", "filters-2020.txt", "filters-2021.txt" and "filters-2022.txt". Due to the lack of updates, the new lists "filters-2023.txt" and "filters-2024.txt" have no longer been added to the xpi file. That's what I corrected. And I updated all of them additionally to also avoid loading errors and to be more up-to-date. The filter lists "EasyList (Optimized)" and "EasyPrivacy (Optimized)" are simply optimised filter lists of the already existing lists "EasyList" and "EasyPrivacy". Here is a quotation taken from the EasyList (Optimized) list's description on Filterlists: Both lists were recommended by @VistaLover, and that's actually enough for me to add them to my special mod. There are much more optimised versions of filter lists available, though. I will check them when time is available. Cheers, AstroSkipper
