My Browser Builds (Part 5)
AstroSkipper replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
The download from the website https://thesage-english-dictionary-and-thesaurus.sooftware.com/windows/download/395678 doesn't work in the most recent and the previous version of New Moon 28. Here is a screenshot: Besides a CSP warning, the issue is mainly related to a function in the JavaScript file download.js of this website. The culprit is the performDownload function. In Mypal68, the download of both files is working. Cheers, AstroSkipper -
Latest Version of Software Running on XP
AstroSkipper replied to pointertovoid's topic in Windows XP
Thanks for pointing to the last XP-compatible version 7.52.2806! Unfortunately, Windows XP support has been dropped in version 7.54.2808. Here is a quotation from its changelog on Softpedia: -
Restart & Purge - A custom button for restarting the browser and, if necessary, purging the startup cache, created by AstroSkipper As I have already reported in @roytam1's browser thread, I have been investigating the restart behaviour of New Moon 28 and Serpent 52 (and also Mypal 68, but this is off-topic here) for some time with a focus on the startup cache. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find much useful information or documentation on this topic on the internet. Even my request in @roytam1's browser thread also went unanswered (addendum: in the meanwhile, @VistaLover has replied here. Thanks again for that! ). It seems that detailed information or knowledge about the startup cache and how the browser restart affects this cache is practically non-existent. The startup cache seems to be a replacement for the former Fastload. It resides in the profile directory to store continuous chunks of data in it. In my New Moon 28 installation, without using the custom folder chrome for scripts and CSS stylesheets, only one file resides there with the name startupCache.4.little. As both, the folder and file name, contain the string startupcache, one can conclude that data is stored inside this file to accelerate the startup of the browser. Which data exactly I really don't know. I didn't find any meaningful documentation. I noticed that very often or in most cases the startup cache was cleared or reorganised automatically without any additional commands when restarting the browser. Sometimes, however, it remained unchanged after a restart. At least, I could find the code responsible for purging the startup cache. Anyway! One thing is clear. If the data in the startup cache is corrupted, then starting problems can occur which only can be solved by deleting its content. This can be done, for example, manually or by the commandline option -purgecaches. But there is no button or item to start this purge of the startup cache in a convenient way from within the UXP browsers. That's why I created a custom button for this purpose in JavaScript (rather a variant of JavaSript), the programming language used for creating new custom buttons by the extension Custom Buttons. I branded this custom button Restart & Purge. It performes a normal restart when left-clicked and additionally purges the startup cache when middle-clicked. After creation I have tested this custom button over a longer period of time, and it works for me as it should. Here is a small screenshot of my custom button Restart & Purge and its tooltip taken from New Moon 28: As the code of Restart & Purge has to be initialised, you won't find it in the tab "Code" but in the tab "Initialization code" of this custom button. Here is a screenshot of its code: The former download links unfortunately contained an XML backup file of the Restart & Purge custom button which either couldn't be installed without additional editing or some characters were not transferred correctly. The problem has to do with the conversion of custom buttons into XML format, where the tool I had used did not work correctly. This time I therefore provide a custom button link for direct install (when the extension Custom Buttons is already installed, of course ). Copy the quoted link below and open it in a new browser tab: I can't insert the code of the link in this post! The MSFN forum editor is totally broken and hasn't been working properly for months especially when it comes to inserting of links. This has already reported multiple times! Well done, who is responsible for it! Due to the shortcomings of the MSFN forum editor, I uploaded the custom button link of Restart & Purge as an HTML file. Here is the download link: https://www.mediafire.com/file/nrqim7ek9s6gp07/CB_button_Restart_%26_Purge.html/file Simply open this HTML file in a browser tab and click the embedded custom button link for Restart & Purge! For the installation of this button, the extension Custom Buttons is required which you can get from this post: https://msfn.org/board/topic/183923-extensions-and-custom-buttons-for-uxp-browsers-corrections-modifications-adjustments-and-special-recommendations/?do=findComment&comment=1226328 And since the legacy Custom Buttons extension runs in the UXP browsers, my custom button Restart & Purge can be used in New Moon 28, Serpent 52, Pale Moon and some other browsers. Greetings, AstroSkipper

And so that you don't get the impression that everything in the Pale Moon forum is hostile and unfair, here's a post from back2themoon, the creator of the thread "New uBlock Origin version released (Special mod by @AstroSkipper)", who has something positive and factual to say about my mod uBlock Origin Legacy: Source: https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=30787&sid=feea3eb912a653ba49c1fb3c2bc447f3&start=60#p248386 Many thanks to back2themoon for this fair and factual contribution!

And a special thanks to @nicolaasjan for providing objective and real facts in that inofficial Pale Moon thread! I really appreciate your objectivity and practicality. As you probably know, I haven't posted on the Pale Moon forum for a long time. And I always feel vindicated in this decision when I read such comments. Thanks again!

And again, only half-truths and falsehoods in the Pale Moon forum by our "friend" athenian200, in a thread that is not the official support thread of my mod uBlock Origin Legacy: Source: https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=30787&sid=feea3eb912a653ba49c1fb3c2bc447f3&start=60#p248309 Why does someone who spreads so many untruths and half-knowledge think he can give advice, especially when he has discredited himself so much with an inadequate examination and disastrous conclusions? Unbelievable! He shouldn't gloss over mistakes he has made, but rather apologise to his readers for the nonsense which he spread there. Read here: https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=30787&sid=feea3eb912a653ba49c1fb3c2bc447f3&start=60#p248292 The only thing that is really true in his stories is that he has no idea about extensions. Here is a quotation from the linked post above: Anyway! If one had read the changelogs I provided, one would have realised that not only filter lists were changed. Please, ignore what this guy is saying there! Form your own independent and uninfluenced opinion! Therefore, I advise everyone to read here or ask questions here to get factually correct answers or information when it comes to my mod uBlock Origin Legacy. Kind regards, AstroSkipper

If all steps in my guide are performed thoroughly, it should work in any case. My guide was tested successfully by different users. You mentioned that you are using VM and Hyper-V in a network with a server and clients. I assume that rather could be the cause of the problem. I use Windows XP installed on real hardware. The method "Restoring WU/MU by using the patch + proxy method" worked like a charm there. So, you unfortunately have to check all your network and internet settings. BTW, I couldn't open your attached file on my Android tablet. I will try it later at my desktop computer where Wireshark is installed. A pcapng file is a special file format used by Wireshark. But one thing is clear. If my guide and other methods don't work in your system, then your system itself is the causer of all problems. My advice to you: Try first one of the methods on a standalone (no client or server) computer without VM or other virtualisation techniques! If it is working then, you rather will get an idea what's the cause of errors. The more complex a system, the more difficult to find the cause of a problem.

My Browser Builds (Part 5)
AstroSkipper replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
@VistaLover Do you have any more in-depth information on the startup cache in Firefox-based browsers or links to corresponding documents? I can't seem to find anything like that. You know your way around the Mozilla pages better. -

Then, I seem to have misunderstood that. -
Yep! I thought he should have found out that for himself when conducting such an "investigation". I don't think he really read my article. Or at least, not really thoroughly.

As you surely noticed, you have to use a more recent version v1.5 of ProxHTTPSProxy when using IE8 for connecting with MU/WU. The error code 0x80072F78 is described as "ERROR_HTTP_INVALID_SERVER_RESPONSE = The server response could not be parsed." You should check everthing related to your internet connection. Did you already read my Complete guide for restoring IE's access to WU/MU website using ProxHTTPSProxy or HTTPSProxy in Windows XP? I think you missed something.

My Browser Builds (Part 5)

Thanks for reporting! The problems probably only occurred on Saturday. Since Sunday, it seems to be working better. At least, I didn't notice further problems since then. -
My Browser Builds (Part 5)
AstroSkipper replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
The issue was not related to a specific browser. Neither Brave, Firefox or Opera did it on my Android tablet. Same problems as in New Moon or Mypal 68 under Windows XP. -
@nicolaasjan I have listed your post with the Dutch language pack in the second post of this thread so that it can be found more easily later. I hope it was in your interest. Greetings, AstroSkipper

My German language pack for New Moon 28 - Fixed - Part 3 My last German language pack 28.10.0rc4 from this post had to be fixed again. I found another issue under Einstellungen -> Datenschutz some weeks ago. Here is a screenshot to demonstrate this issue: I have fixed this issue and assigned the number 28.10.0rc5 to the new, corrected version. Here are two screenshots taken from the fixed version in the most recent version of New Moon 28 (2024-01-31): And here is the download link of the updated, German language package in version 28.10.0rc5 for the more recent versions of New Moon 28 (issue observed starting with the version palemoon-28.10.7a1.win32-git-20240120-d849524bd-uxp-a62d808d09-xpmod): https://www.mediafire.com/file/xty66noengy0ktg/de-28.10.0_RC5.xpi/file Greetings from Germany, AstroSkipper

If my tip An experimental solution for the error code 0x80072F78 while accessing the WU/MU website doesn't work for you, here some further ideas: Check the Windows Update log. Check the date and time of your computer and Windows XP. Check if Windows XP is activated. Try a more recent ProxHTTPSProxy version. Check if the proxy is installed correctly and is working properly. Update all certificates.

My Browser Builds (Part 5)
AstroSkipper replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
The reason why I investigated the restart behaviour of these browsers is that I have created various restart custom buttons (JavaScript) for Firefox-based browsers in the past and currently have made one that performed a normal restart when left-clicked and additionally deletes the startup cache when middle-clicked. I also extracted the restart code, which is used by New Moon 28, from its source code and had a look at it. But somehow I get the feeling that manually deleting the startup cache is not really necessary any longer, as the browser seems to do this on its own in most cases when restarting it. -
My Browser Builds (Part 5)
AstroSkipper replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
@roytam1 I have investigated the restart behaviour of New Moon 28 (and Serpent 52, too). I have started the browser many times and observed the startup cache. I noticed that very often or in most cases the startup cache was cleared automatically without any additional commands. Do you have more information about this? Is this normal? I thought that this cache is only deleted in special cases or triggered by the user, manually or by the command line option -purgecaches, for example. -

I just had to read this in the Pale Moon forum by athenian200: Source: https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=30787&sid=feea3eb912a653ba49c1fb3c2bc447f3&start=60#p248158 Like perhaps some in this forum may already know, I am a mathematician. Unfortunately, from a purely mathematical and statistical point of view, I have to rate this study as unsatisfactory. School mark: F (in Germany 6). If this is the way this so-called developer works, then good night Marie (German saying, translated )! Before any investigation, you should first of all be clear about what you actually want to investigate. That has gone completely wrong here. Anyone who compares apples with pears and thinks meaningful results would be generated is completely wrong. My advice to this self-appointed expert: First read and understand. Then gather facts and think about it carefully. Then you'll be able to bake such childish stuff. The only thing that went well in this investigation was that the "good" man used WinMerge for comparison. But that was it. What is obvious, however, is that this guy really doesn't know much about extensions. My advice to athenian200: Read my article thoroughly before spreading such nonsense! And if you have no idea or are overwhelmed with such an examination, then you should leave it to those who really know how to do it. And what can you actually do with such an "investigation"? Unfortunately, as already mentioned, only this:

Well done! Your Dutch colleagues will be delighted with such a service. BTW, I already mentioned this issue here two weeks ago: https://msfn.org/board/topic/185966-my-browser-builds-part-5/?do=findComment&comment=1258614 I have fixed my German language pack the day I posted this issue. This corrected language pack has been in testing mode since then. I will post it when testing mode is over, and all is definitely working. So far, no further issues.
