I will only include programs in this list that receive updates in some form, be it program updates, definition updates or database updates. With the exception, of course, that there are also programs that do not necessarily need such updates.

I have a question. Can we list software that may be discontinued but still work ? I was thinking like for example Outpost Firewall free. I think it's still better than XP's own firewall plus many free antiviruses don't include a firewall anyway.

In my first post, I already explained that. The last working firewalls will be listed here, of course. A firewall does not need necessarily updates if it still works properly in Windows XP. I know Outpost Firewall very well, I used it long time ago. Therefore, it is on my internal list of security programs. However, I must mention here that I have already presented the by far best firewall for Windows XP, and, compared to all the usual suspects, this is definitely Windows 10 Firewall Control Plus XP from Sphinx:

Also i found that proxy settings window is already broken on this prerelease because of a typo.

@feodor2 I assume you mean this error which occurs when clicking onto the button Settings:

    Mypal-68-13-0-Network-Settings.png

Right? In any case, clicking this button leads to this error shown above in the console, and the Connection Settings page can't be opened. :(

The problem starts to occur in your new pre-release of Mypal 68.13.0. I checked the previous pre-release 68.13.0 and the version 68.12.5. Both are working fine. I compared the file subdialogs.js to the old ones and nothing has changed. Unfortunately, I can't find your typo  but I am sure you already know where it might be located. :) Anyway! Just FYI!

Do you know if malware hunter works on XP 64  ?

All information about Malware Hunter is here:

    There you can see:

    System requirements:

Runs on Microsoft Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, 7, XP and Vista. Including both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

Conclusion: it should run under XP 64.

Thanks mina7601 - that's the bar I was talking about.. Any ideas how to turn it off?

And may I kindly ask where you want to open tabs if the tab bar is turned off? That does not really make sense. Tabs are opened horizontally or maybe vertically by using an extension. That's the way this browser works. If you need more space to read a web page, you can use the full screen mode with the F11 key. I know that for example in New Moon 28 you can toggle the visibility of the tab bar but I never used or needed it. BTW, most features of the legacy browsers can also be retrofitted in Mypal 68 with the help of userscripts with the extensions *.uc.js or *.css. Have a look for example here under custom buttons:

Noted.  I've *never* seen vertical tabs until Cocodile's post above.  A new "tab hoarder" function.

For every desired feature, there is a solution in the form of an extension. :) But my tabs will stay horizontally. I am a creature of habit. :P

@we3fan FYI, KB2686509 contains the file kblChecker.dll and is described as a Keyboard Layout Check. It was installed in my system on 21.07.2012. :)

AstroSkipper, for what it is worth, a clean install is almost always better than a lot of fixing and cleaning.

Generally, I would tend to agree to your suggestion but in my case that would only be a measure if all alternatives failed. My Windows XP partition is very complex and full of special settings. It has grown over years and setting it all up again would also take years if I could remember everything perfectly. The current error only affects this particular program Quick Startup, so considering reinstalling is not really an option for me. BTW, this affected partition was created in 2004. Since then, I have never had to perform a new installation on this computer. I have a sophisticated imaging system and can revert to an older state at any time. However, according to my nature, I am interested in what the actual problem is. I like to solve all problems myself in order to have full control and to constantly expand my knowledge. :) Many errors are of a recurring nature, and a new installation would only be a temporary solution. I have a large archive of problem solutions that specifically affect Windows XP. So I can fix these errors very quickly. Some error solutions are designed by me and cannot be found on the Internet. smilie_denk_24.gif

    Hi @AstroSkipper :)

I never install any Updates, but I tested this to see if I can reproduce your bug.

    HP laptop from 2008
Clean SP3 + legacyupdate.net (LegacyUpdate-1.6.2.exe) - 345 Updates installed, 145 POSRedy Updates, took some time to install all.

Installed all Updates, but these last 2 failed to install:
Security Update for Windows XP Embedded (KB2686509)
    Windows Live Essentials
    88S99.png

    WinUpdatesView 1.17, 345 Updates installed:

WinUpdatesView 1.17, 345 Updates installed, Copy Selected Items, Title only:
    https://pastebin.com/YBfAh0Ea

    Quick Startup 5.20.1.185 Installed:
    qqrbS.png

    So it works fine here.
KB2686509 failed to install, I don't know if that makes any difference.

Thank you very much, @we3fan! That's a confirmation I really needed. upp.gif Unfortunately, I have to conclude that there is indeed a problem in my Windows XP partition (with all POSReady updates). And it doesn't seem to be related to the POSReady updates themselves as I assumed. Therefore, I have to investigate that again and this time much more deeply although I already did a lot of fixing and cleaning. uniforme4.gif Anyway! Great job! goodjob.gif Thanks again for all your efforts! :)

It detects and removes stubborn malware that can cause potential danger. Its malware database is constantly updated either automatically or manually depending on the installed version. Additionally, it is supposed to clean disks and speed up your PC. It is even equipped with the Avira scan engine.

    Features:

    • Malware Scan - Scan your computer quickly and thoroughly. Detect and remove stubborn malware to prevent potential danger. Support scheduled scan to save your time
    • Speed Up - Help you optimize your system to speed up and boost your computer performance.
    • Disk Cleaner - Clean up temporary & unnecessary files. Remove unneeded documents to save computer storage space.

Although I personally don't prefer features like cleanup or optimization inside an antimalware program, the fact that this program is still compatible with Windows XP and has an Avira scan engine does not make it uninteresting. In any case, it can be used as an offline scanner in the free version and can also be set up as a portable version. You have full control over Malware Hunter via its systray icon. It is definitely an option for Windows XP.

Is anyone here in the forum using Windows XP SP3 (32 Bit) Professional, fully updated including all POSReady Updates on real hardware without any virtualization (not running in a VM) like me? If so, please read this post for doing a short test of Glarysoft Startup Manager or Quick Startup! A screenshot of the main window showing application and Windows services would be very helpful! Thanks in advance!

@feodor2 You mentioned the breakage of the old Firefox 68.12.esr language packs. Did you change a lot of entities in the en-US locales of your new pre-release? Or are there other reasons for the breakage? I had a quick look into them but before comparing to the old ones I thought it would be a good idea to ask the developer directly. :D

@feodor2 Thanks for your reply and observations! When time is available, I will compare the locale files of your latest pre-release with the files of the old German language pack. Then I can clearly see which files and  entities have been changed. I did that already for MailNews from scratch and development is still in progress. The old language packs of Thunderbird 52.9 have not been working for many years. Therefore, I know what is to be done to get it working. The only real problem is always the extent of the changes. Unfortunately, it is usually a meticulous and elaborate detail work, and Mypal in English or German is actually the same for me. After comparison I will know more in any case. starescreen.gif

Also, the My Kasperky login seems non-functional.

If the login is necessary for activation of KFA, then you will probably stuck without any further features like for example real-time protection. In terms of Bitdefender, the same problem occurs. No login possible, no activation. Fortunately, I am not particularly interested in these programs. And one thing is clear: Kaspersky has removed all resources relating to KFA 19. So I am not at all surprised that it is no longer possible to log into the My Kaspersky account. smilie_denk_24.gif

@feodor2 has uploaded a new pre-release of Mypal 68.13.0. Here is his post:

JavaScript is now at level 78 in this new pre-release. Very important is to uninstall all language packs if used before installing this version. The new pre-release of Mypal 68.13.0 doesn't seem to be compatible with the old Firefox language packs. I already installed the new pre-release, and two sites which weren't working in the old pre-release are running again: VirusTotal and Leo. :cheerleader: More tests in the next days! In any case, @feodor2 made a great job! :thumbup Thanks again for sharing your work! :worship:

Based in the south of France. Wonder why they still support XP?

Yep, I thought we also need here software coming from Europe. :P So that no one gets the idea that I would only favour countries here that still use Windows XP more often, such as China. :D And in terms of your question, there is an old song in Germany called "Wunder gibt es immer wieder", translated "Miracles happen all the time".

  19. Ultra Adware Killer

Ultra Adware Killer is a simple but powerful adware remover for Windows by Carifred. It removes browser toolbars, add-ons, plugins, unwanted search providers, hijacked homepages, and potentially unwanted programs (PUP's). It also allows resetting Chrome and Firefox preferences optionally. Ultra Adware Killer 10.7.7.0 from 09.05.2023 is the last XP-compatible version. It is fully portable, so no installation is needed, and it's free of charge. Every time Ultra Adware Killer is started, it briefly checks for updates.

    Ultra Adware Killer overview

Ultra Adware Killer is a powerful adware and malware remover for Windows, which has the ability to scan all the users in a system. This can save you lots of time logging in to other user accounts and performing the scan again.

Ultra Adware Killer is also the only application of this type that supports nearly all Internet browsers, not just the main ones.it removes browser toolbars, ad-ons, plugins, unwanted search providers and hijacked home pages, potentially unwanted programs (PUP's), and also rogues, trojans, rootkits, ransomware and all other forms of malware.

Most well known browsers are supported (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, IE). Support for other Chromium and Firefox based browsers was added in version 10.4 and 10.5. Opera, Avast Secure Browser, cCleaner Browser, Brave, Chromium, Tor Browser, Waterfox, Netscape and Thunderbird and many others are now supported, at least partially.

This application also lets you easily reset the browsers configuration, allowing them to run as smoothly as when they were installed.

I did a scan, and it worked as advertised. To do so, you only need to press the Start scan button, wait until the scan ends, and remove the items found. Typically, the whole operation takes only a few minutes. Additionally, a custom scan to check files or single folders can be performed at any time  But you have to read carefully not to delete entries which are actually belonging to harmless programs. On the homepage https://www.carifred.com/ultra_adware_killer/, you will find much more detailed  instructions, help and information about this program. I think it is an interesting alternative to for example the depreciated Malwarebytes AdwCleaner. :thumbup

    Greetings, AstroSkipper matrix.gif

  20. As we all or at least many of us know, the last XP-compatible version 6.047 of Malwarebytes AdwCleaner is obsolete and not useful anymore. Freshly installed, it's most recent database is from 2017, and thus 6 years old. No option! @VistaLover has investigated this in detail and presented it in this post:

Therefore, we need a replacement for this program in Windows XP to get rid especially of adware, spyware, potentially unwanted programs (PUPs), and browser hijackers. Of course, most more recent antimalware programs  already provide these features such as Malwarebytes Free or Premium. But a specialized tool would not be bad either, and many people like to use those tools, like for example me. I did a research as I always do and found an interesting tool. In my next post, I will present an alternative to Malwarebytes AdwCleaner which is up-to-date. :) And the winner is Ultra Adware Killer.

  21. Here is a little advice for testing software, and especially an anti-malware program! Just checking that a program can be installed and appears to run without errors at first glance has nothing to do with testing software. And presenting results in a short sentence even less!

    11 hours ago, Vistapocalypse said:

I trust you are able to get current definitions?

Justified question!  And the fact that you have to ask this question at all is rather embarrassing. :blushing: And I could go on and on. When testing an antivirus or anti-malware program, a few test results should be mentioned. Does the program itself still receive updates? Can it download the latest virus definitions? Are all the basic features like real-time protection, manual scanning, setting exceptions, changing program settings and so on still functional? Just one sentence cannot answer such questions, though. One sentence is informationless and rather meaningless. One has to put some effort into it, even if one might otherwise never write more than a few words. smilie_denk_24.gif
