My Browser Builds (Part 4)
AstroSkipper replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Okay! I investigated this issue a bit more closely. In a new profile, no problem with the feature 'multi-row tab bar', but in my main profile, there is this problem as long as this feature is enabled. I assume it is a new incompatibility to another extension or setting after updating Serpent 52. Maybe, I find the culprit. Well, that was unfortunately a fallacy! I created once again a new profile in Serpent 52, installed only Tab Utilities Phoenix 2.1.2, activated the 'multi-row tab bar' feature, opened two rows of empty tabs, and then the browser went completely berserk. It changed the display from one row to two rows flashing under a 100% CPU load. Only disabling this feature in Tab Utilities Phoenix made the browser usable again. Something in the code of Serpent 52 must have changed, in any case the multi-row tab display no longer works as usual, at least in my system. -

XP/Vista-compatible clients for modern email services?
AstroSkipper replied to Mathwiz's topic in Windows XP
Our days are numbered, too. But, joking aside! Speculating about the future is one thing. But we are (probably) not clairvoyants . The actual state is decisive. It's not only about your needs or mine. The fact is, MailNews and DreamMail Pro work with many email services, unfortunately with the exception of Microsoft 365. But in old operating systems, not every new gadget has to and can work. Then the user just has to use a more up-to-date operating system. There, the choice of email clients is much greater, and presumably, one of them will work with the latest stuff. -

A small update information! DreamMail Pro has been updated again and is now available in version 6.6.6.5. It is still XP compatible. Great to see ongoing development! Here is the download link: https://dl.cy-email.com/dm6/Download/dmpro_setup6.6.6.5.exe Cheers, AstroSkipper -

In Serpent 52, not only Tab Mix Plus seems to be broken. Even the extension Tab Utilities Phoenix in the version 2.1.0 and also the most recent 2.1.2 from March 6, 2023 is not working properly. The feature 'multi-row tab bar' causes a 100% CPU utilization. Something tab related must have been changed. Only disabling this feature in Tab Utilities Phoenix will make Serpent usable again. I am not really happy with that as it is a feature I actually always have been using. -

You are absolutely right. I mixed up the variables reader.parse-on-load.enabled and reader.parse-on-load.force-enabled. Shi* happens! I already corrected my post. Here is a screenshot of my settings in Serpent 52: Cheers, AstroSkipper -

To control and change keyboard shortcuts in general, I used the extension dorando keyconfig in the past. I don't know if it is still compatible, but I think so. Here is a link: https://addons.thunderbird.net/de/thunderbird/addon/dorando-keyconfig/ The last (legacy) version was 2018.1. -

The keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Alt+R works in my installation of Serpent 52, but F9 doesn't. The variable reader.parse-on-load.enabled is set to true (default setting), and the variable reader.parse-on-load.force-enabled is set to false (default setting). -
360 Extreme Explorer Modified Version
AstroSkipper replied to Humming Owl's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
With all due respect, I see it a bit differently, and your statement (underlined by me) does not describe the situation correctly. There are two email clients that work with Windows XP and Vista and can handle app password or Oauth2. And MailNews in particular. For me, it's completely sufficient. Its Oauth2 protocol works great with Gmail. It should be mentioned that not everyone needs a Microsoft 365 account in pre-Win 7 systems. And its light web version Outlook.com works flawlessly in MailNews. And that means MailNews (and even DreamMail Pro) are more than acceptable in any case, especially for such old OSs like XP and Vista. Additional support of Microsoft 365 would be great, of course, even if I had nothing to gain from it. PS: Sorry for being off-topic here, but a reply to a comment can already cause something like this.- 2,340 replies

1 - Why ? Elaborate please. 2 - Personally you, undertstandable , your choice of course . Astroskipper, why would you join the anti-kernel crowd all of a sudden ? And exactly now ! Please tell me, if it's no secrtet. 1 - There is nothing more to elaborate. I have already sufficiently justified my position in this post: And here: 2 - Of course! Based on my experiences. Just to clarify, I didn't join whatever crowd you are talking about. I do not have that kind of camp thinking. I am an individual and, for the reasons I have given, I consider these so-called Extended Kernels to be questionable and superfluous. Especially in a productive system. As you know, I am a die-hard fan of Windows XP. Even if there was such an Extended Kernel for Windows XP, I wouldn't use it unless it would be official, which will never happen, though. And as long as Windows 8.1 works and can be used, there is actually no need for such an Extended Kernel anyway.

Yes, in terms of site compatibility, 360Chrome 13/13.5 is still ahead at the moment. In Mypal 68, there are still many websites that do not work correctly. You are basically right about the content. But I have to mention that I am a big, die-hard fan of UXP browsers. I will use New Moon 28 and Serpent as my main browsers for as long as I can.- 2,340 replies

You are absolutely right! There is presumably nothing more to say here. Maybe, in future times, but then a new thread can be opened.
-
Yep, that's what I meant. Long time ago, when I was on Windows ME, I used in the end the Extended Kernel "KernelEx". Although it worked in a lot of cases, it was always fiddly. And, it never worked out of the box. At a certain point, I gave up. No more Extended Kernels. If an OS can't be used anymore, or additional kernel functions are needed, one has to change to another OS.

I can only agree with that! Mypal 68 was and is an interesting project with great potential. I hope that my expectations will really be fulfilled.- 2,340 replies

Totally agreed! So far about the Windows 8.1 Extended Kernel! No need for such an Extended Kernel! I personally would never use any Extended Kernels. If an OS does not work anymore due to its age, or the implemented functions are no longer sufficient, the user will have to change the operating system by necessity. Although I am not a fan of Microsoft and what they did in the past, I would only trust such changes to the system to programmers with a great deal of experience and in-depth knowledge of the source code, i.e. programmers as they work for Microsoft, the actual manufacturer of Windows OSs. And now a word about this thread! This thread has gone completely off the rails and is pretty much the most unworthy I have ever seen. It's totally uninformative, and most of the posts are just off-topic. I don't understand what this is all about.

Thanks for the tip! But it's been in my local archive for a long time. You know I am a fan of good and working extensions. -

I am quite sure Decentraleyes was just an example to show that there is no problem with downloading extensions from the website addons.mozilla.org by Serpent 55. Nothing else. I assume @VistaLover chose this example to show the yellow banner and yet the possibility of downloading the extension. -

What is your preferred release version of Windows 10?
AstroSkipper replied to sunryze's topic in Windows 10
Totally agreed! For older (not as old as mine) hardware, Windows 7 is a very good choice. -
At this point, I would like to say thanks for all your efforts in building XP- compatible versions of youtube-dl and yt-dlp. I use your builds for a longer time, and they are great. Hopefully, this permanent throttling issue can be fixed again. For that, I totally agree with @VistaLover. I hate Google for all these unnecessary changes.

What is your preferred release version of Windows 10?
AstroSkipper replied to sunryze's topic in Windows 10
Telemetry is not my main problem with Windows 10. The overall restrictions inside this OS, the access to the system only via account, the cutted rights of an administrator and the disastrous user interface are much worse. -
Restoring AU/MU/WU using a proxy server There is a new method to restore AU/MU/WU in Windows XP (and also for other Windows versions, which are not topic here, though). This method was created by @ItCoder. Here is the link to its post: He provides a specific installer for each Windows version. Here is the link: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AsVjtW11rJfA3FQANrgg_QXRMgfx?e=lCF2lV The installer for Windows XP is XP.exe. I didn't test this method. No need here for a further method to restore AU/MU/WU. I already have two working methods to check for updates. My system is fully updated, and new updates won't come anymore as we already know. Unfortunately, the whole method is not really well documented. Therefore, I can't say much about it. It seems you have to execute the installer, follow the prompt, and then it should work. It is perhaps interesting that this method is also said to restore AU. If you tested this method, it would be very interesting to participate from your experiences. Feel free to comment! Cheers, AstroSkipper Edit: More details about this method here:
