I love the thing...I even made 'em buy me one at work to replace my Wireless IntelliMouse 2.0. Of course, I was getting tired of replacing batteries in the keyboard and mouse anyway. Plus the keyboard would stick on the repeat sometimes since I have my repeat rate at max...and that's a PITA when it happens while you're entering a password or working on a script.

Just for future reference, they're called either Network Interface Cards (NIC for short) or Ethernet Cards...not Ethernet Modems. For the highspeed internet (usually called "broadband") you'll get either a Cable Modem or a DSL Modem...but this will connect to a NIC in your PC (or via USB cable). You shouldn't have any problems with the two connections.

This statement is true on smaller volumes. NTFS may be more complex, but it is more optimized for large volumes. Since it's more resistant to fragmentation it'll also hold up better over time. NTFS will recover files on it's own by simply using chkdsk. It will even detect if there's been corruption and automatically schedule a chkdsk. The chances of data corruption are also far less when using NTFS vs. FAT32.

What are they running for a server now? WSUS may still be an option for only 10 PCs.

If you're asking if you can have multiple network cards installed in a single PC...yes, you can.

I recently picked up the MS Laser Mouse 6000. So far it's awesome. The only thing I don't like is the default setting of "zoom" for the left side button instead of "browser back"...that's easily change though. Gaming is very smooth with it as well. I've seen problems with the Logitech laser mice as well as the Razer mice in games (namely those based on the DOOM 3 engine) but I haven't experienced any such problems with this mouse yet. One of my clan mates was/is having problems with his. EDIT: My clan mate experiencing problems has a Logitech G5...

[Help] - Change of heatsink freezes Windows boot
nmX.Memnoch replied to redder's topic in Windows XP
Idling in the BIOS won't heat it up much either. -
Just an explenation on the statement...Windows 2000 and Windows XP can't create a FAT32 partition larger than 32GB. Than in and of itself should be the best reason. NTFS will definitely be faster though. Not only is the security and stability of NTFS better, it offers far superior data recovery and is much more resistant to fragmentation.

[Help] - VPN Connections Gone/Unable to create VPN Post SP2
nmX.Memnoch replied to sysbuilder's topic in Windows XP
Cluberti, Can you go into detail what this reg value specifies? LocalSystem is the value on my system, however, I'm hesitant to make any changes to the user's system without some clarification on what I'm changing and an idea of what the repercussions may be. I've not been able to reach this user as of yet, so, I'm unaware if his value in the registry is set to LocalSystem or not. Thanks for the info, your responses are appreciated! This value that tells the service what user to start as. Doesn't creating a VPN connection within XP also require the Telephony service be running? Or maybe it's that it requires the Remote Access Connection Manager service, which has a dependency on the Telephony service. Anyway, check that both of those services are running. I just double checked that on my workstation (we disable both of those services as part of our standard rollout). With them disabled the options were greyed out...but available with the services running. -
ZipZoomFly and ChiefValue are good as well. ZipZoomFly actually beats NewEgg on price with a lot of items when you take shipping into account (ZZF does free 2nd day shipping on nearly everything).

[Question] - Removing a Sliptreamed Service Pack 2
nmX.Memnoch replied to Pivkhan's topic in Windows XP
Just to clarify...I am in agreement with that assessment as well. My previous post was simply an explenation of how service and process priority can affect how other things run. As I previously mentioned he probably has his system frustrated, discombobulated, confused...whatever you want to call it...with all of the different driver versions he's tried. He may be able to get it working on the current install, but to me it sounds like he'd be better off starting with a fresh install and going from there. However, I would still recommend trying the latest chipset driver from NVIDIA before doing the reinstall. With so many things working as you say I still say it sounds like the chipset drivers aren't even there. http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_nf4_wi...2_amd_6.70.html -
There's only been two critical updates since 2003 SP2...and one only applies to the Korean language version. Those are MS06-003 and MS06-009. On top of that you have the monthly Outlook Junk Email Filter Update...for which you only need the most current release. The easiest way to find updates for a given product is to use the TechNet Security site. For instance, to find the latest updates for Office 2003 SP2 select Office 2003 from the Product / Technology: drop down, then select Office 2003 SP2 from the Service Pack: drop down. Hit the Go button and it'll show you everything that applies to Office 2003 SP2. I have to agree with jondercik though...WSUS with Automatic Updates configured via GPO would be the best option. How many workstations are you talking about?

[Question] Searching for a new router
nmX.Memnoch replied to Wicket20519's topic in Hardware Hangout
I'm using the built-in XP Wireless Service on my wife's machine without any problems. I do, however, have an SSID defined as well as using WPA PSK. Both devices (router and NIC) are Linksys products. Her machine experienced the same problems prior to XP SP2 though. -
[Question] - Removing a Sliptreamed Service Pack 2
nmX.Memnoch replied to Pivkhan's topic in Windows XP
His post made sense to me. If one thing is prioritized over everything else, then everything else will run sluggish. Run something like Prime95 and set it at a high priority. Now go try to play a game such as Half-Life 2 or Quake 4 and watch how poorly it performs. I know that Prime95 is an extreme example compared to the slight overhead from SP2 (which is much more than just a kernel recompile), but it makes the point. -
[Question] Searching for a new router

IEEE approved the first draft in January. http://news.article-review.com/index.php/2...tandard-passed/ -
Try what ripken204 mentioned first...try just the ECC stick to make sure it will work with the motherboard. If it works there should be a setting in the BIOS to turn off ECC. There's still no guarantee it'll work with mixed memory types though, even with ECC disabled.
-
I'm not understanding the difficulty with installing it either. Just double click the file and follow the prompts. You'll probably just want the default options so just keep clicking Next until it starts installing...then wait for it to finish.

[Help] - Change of heatsink freezes Windows boot
nmX.Memnoch replied to redder's topic in Windows XP
Yeah, I would start with reseating both the CPU and the new HSF. It's possible that the heatink is making little to no contact with the CPU causing it to heat up rapidly during the boot process. -
[Question] Searching for a new router

Has anyone tried either the WRT54GX2 (SRX200) or WRT54GX4 (SRX400)? I've been thinking about it but with 802.11n coming sometime within the next year (hopefully) I've also been trying to hold off for that. -
SATA, PATA, USB, Firewire Expansion card problem?
nmX.Memnoch replied to Maleko's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
That's because as far as boot orders go it'll skip one option if it doesn't find the device. His system doesn't have a SATA drive connected so it skips directly to the SCSI option. -
Why even do it then? You've probably got a reboot somewhere after WPI which will take care of reloading exlorer.exe anyway.

[Question] Is it possible to tweak the "specify size" option
nmX.Memnoch replied to Viper187's topic in Windows XP
You shall have only a few of these files in comparision with the magnimous number of the kb files. It's called sarcasm... Having that much warrants a good directory structure so you don't have to search for them all the time. If you have to constantly search your system for those types of things you need to become better organized before worrying about whether or not the search function has KB vs MB.I have three times as much music and I've never had to use Search to find the one I want to listen to. -
It's probalby Unbuffered ECC. Registered ECC is keyed differently so it won't even fit in the slot if the motherboard doesn't support it. Also, if the system supported Registered ECC then it would require it. However, your problem isn't whether or not it's Registered. The A7V-VE doesn't support ECC memory.
