Slow subdirectory expansion in left-hand Win2K Explorer pane
tomasz86 replied to billtodd's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
You may want to consider using an Explorer replacement. There are plenty of them from a very basic ones to quite advanced applications. Almost any of them should be better than the original one... I think that Directory Opus is the best but it's also very expensive (and the newest version doesn't work in Win2k). There are free alternatives such as CubicExplorer, ExplorerXP and many others. -
Windows Update works correctly if you just want to install all official updates. It's simpler to use than installing tons of official updates manually.
-
I'm not blackwingcat but I think he means that you should just run Windows Update and install everything what will show up there.
-
A new daily release is ready. I've updated everything to the newest versions available and also removed 7-Zip related files (they will be included in USP5.2 as an optional component).

@ppgrainbow All versions of UURollup are available in my Windows 2000 Download Archive. Just navigate to Windows2000/UnofficialUpdatesRollup. @ You're right. Slipstreaming is broken at the moment

I also can't send any messages.

Any way of using Windows 2000 with 11GB of RAM?
tomasz86 replied to Bakuchris's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
The other question is whether the OP actually needs 8 GB for the system or maybe a larger RAMdisk would be better. I had to sell one of my memory sticks and have now only 4 GB of RAM but before I had 8 GB and was using 4 GB for the system and 4 GB for a RAMdisk. I found it more efficient as the RAMdisk was used for TEMPs and it had very positive effect on some applications which rely on temporary files heavily. -

Right. PAE must be enabled and then you should be able to use the remaining RAM as a RAMdisk. I myself have tested only up to 8 GB. @submix8c Applications like ABBYY FineReader are multi-threaded and each thread uses a lot of memory so there are some scenarios where such a single application can end up using way more memory than 4GB in a 32-bit Windows -

BlackWingCat's modified kernel allows to use up to 8 GB of RAM with PAE enabled. You'd need to install Windows 2000 Datacenter Server in order to be able to use more than that. -
Happy New Year! It's a false positive. SFC.DLL has been patched in order to disable Windows File Protection as it was going crazy with unofficial files installed (especially when installing a newer version of UURollup over an older one and then uninstalling it, WFP wanted to replace the official files with the unofficial ones, etc.). I get this when trying to enable Hibernation: I guess we'll have to to test it more thoroughly later to find out whether it's indeed UURollup to break it. Thanks for info about Malware Defender. I'll try to test the issue here.
-
After a two-week break a new daily of UURollup-v11 is ready. There are no drastic changes in it. I've just updated all kernel files to the newest versions and also partially re-enabled Automatic Updates in order to make Windows Defender update mechanism work (thanks for information).

Anyone please correct me if I'm wrong but I think that the latest official version of MSVCRT.DLL for Win2k should be the one included in Update Rollup 2. It's MSVCRT.DLL 6.1.9848.0 Feel free to download Update Rollup 2 and either install the whole package or just copy the file to your system.

Probably yes I'm getting an error when trying to enable hibernation in my system and I wonder whether it's just an individual issue or maybe a more serious problem.
-
I'm specifically interested whether you've installed any unofficial updates.
-
I'm going to upload a new daily release of UURollup-v11 later today... but I'd like to ask you for something. Could anyone check whether hibernation works in his system? That is in a system where recent weekly or daily version of UURollup-v11 has been installed. Edit: By the way, I'm planning to add a simple firewall to USP 5.2. It's still a far-distance plan but I'm going to use Malware Defender 2.7.3.0003 as a basis. It's very light, quite simple but also offers many configuration options for advanced users. It's also the newest available firewall software supporting Win2k. I'm not going to integrate it as it is but rather prepare a minimalistic version which would be easier to use for beginners too (a kind of "one-click" solution). This firewall would be disabled by default and available in the Control Panel. You would also be able to uninstall it using the Control Panel's Add/Remove Windows Components applet.
-
Could you tell us which updates exactly have you installed? I think I had this problem some time ago and the reason was that the new NT6.x MSXML libraries were not present in the system. I think that older test versions (weekly / daily) of UURollup-v11 were affected. Have you installed any of them?

Installing the .NET Framework 3.5 on Windows 8
tomasz86 replied to MAVERICKS CHOICE's topic in Windows 8
I think that it's impossible to install .NET Framework 3.5 in Windows 8 once you've installed language packs. Have you installed any of them in your system? -
Thanks! It will probably take quite a long time to get it ready. I'll let you know for sure
-
It must be something else to cause such a behaviour (maybe antivirus or firewall software?). I've got both Chrome and Iron here updated to the newest stable versions and I've experienced no problems.
-
Thanks for the list It would be great if you helped testing them later once USP5.2's development has gone further and such a modified driver.cab is ready.
-
This isn't 100% true. You need to switch to Classic theme and THEN disable the service. Some font settings are different in Win2k (and Classic theme uses those too) and if you only switch the service off then Windows will still use the settings from Luna. I'd also add to the list: Use Classic view in Control Panel. Disable Security Center service. Disable mouse cursor shadow. Disable unused tray icon hiding. Disable taskbar icon grouping There are probably several more settings which I don't remember at the moment.
-
Why not just compare the ISO before and after applying vLite? You'll be able to compare the changes and reproduce them manually.
-
I think that it might be useful to add drivers for mobile phones / tablets of several main manufacturers, i.e. Samsung, Nokia, LG, HTC, Apple, etc. They don't take a lot of space and come in very handy when you need to connect your phone or tablet to the computer. Also some of the new driver installers themselves may not support Win2k any more so installing those drivers in a normal way will be a real pain. If they're integrated in the system then everything will be detected and installed automatically.

I think that some other applications may require IIS6. Even some of the .NET Framework 2.0's tools ask for it (I don't remember which exact tool it is now but I'll try to check later).
