1. explains what gets stored in index.dat What is index.dat? This program can open and view the index.dat files Index.dat Suite 2.8.4 (freeware)
2. i edited my post, just to clean it up a bit. You can upload images here and post a screenshot maybe. http://imageshack.us/index3.php [edit] worthy links http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Index.dat http://www.autoitscript.com/autoit3/docs/appendix/clsid.htm
3. Desktop.ini tells Explorer.exe how to display the folder, I bet that 'CLSID' tells it to hide the folder despite having view hidden files/folders checked in folder options. Also you dont need to delete the line, just comment it out using a semi-colon ";". I apoligize for not understanding the exact behavior you see happening when you clear the History. Is the folder and Desktop.ini being recreated when you refresh Explorer? Check out this program, ExplorerXP (freeware), those files don't hide from this. Glad to hear your using Firefox btw
4. I really reccomend the Rayovac I-C3 15 minute rechargeable batteries. I buy them at Target for about $9 a 4pack.
5. do what most of us here do, use nlite, copy your xp cd to the hard drive, slipstream SP2, burn and install from that.
6. glad to hear that worked!
7. News: Microsoft To Add A Black Box To Windows
8. To Disable Portable Media Devices (C:\WINDOWS\system32\audiodev.dll). Download ShellExView (freeware) to find and disable Portable Media Devices, and Portable Media Devices Menu.
9. I believe there are many sites like this. I will try crashing Firefox into the site later in vmware just to see what happens, I'd bet nothing. One could also make Google the home page or use a google toolbar to avoid typing the url each time.
10. im just trying to make the point that it is dishonest to claim that Opera has way more features than Firefox without recognizing that essentially all of these features and MANY MORE exist for Firefox in the way of Extensions. Firefox with Extensions is functionally superior. I also think the performace difference is overrated. I repeated the tests with a 'bloated' version of Firefox, and found a much narrower performance gap, how is that possible? I think the original experiment may be flawed. I'd be interested in seeing others uphold the experiments results. Its unwise to just go around and repeat the results of one user as a mantra. Does Firefox really take about 12 seconds to start on anyone's machine? Im just skeptical of the new Opera bandwagon, I tried Opera and wasnt 'blown away' like some people garuntee, in fact I wasnt much impressed at all. Yes I am biased towards Firefox, but I dont hide that. And I will get to those links tommorow.
11. its sounds like he is making a custom unattended cd or maybe i misunderstood something. I hate to see you create a false persona like that, maybe you can explain it better. Get Skype, my username is DigeratiPrime
12. @KJxp nice avatar! Have you checked the boot order in the BIOS? You BIOS may be set to boot straight from the HDD to skip the cd check.
13. just a simple question: why hasn't the first post been updated with the new reg file? It still points to the one from last october, and misleadingly says "updated recently" lol.
14. How many Firefox Extensions do you use? Go to about:info or use one of these extensions: ListZilla InfoLister Also feel free to share which ones you use, I might be missing some!
15. **I am duplicating this post from here, for convenience** OK I found out that EVEREST Home Edition (Freeware) can display the Hardware ID. Screenshot: GUIDE: Go to Report>Report Wizard>Custom Selection> Uncheck All, and then expand 'Devices' and select just 'Windows Devices'. 16. Check out CCleaner (free) and Disable some Window Services. I really reccomend a good Firewall, ex ZoneAlarm (free). BlackViper's website had a well known list, but the site is being renovated i think. I actually posted a Full List of registry tweaks to disable these services here: BlackViper Service Configurations Registry Keys
17. excellent! The definitive shell pack!
18. This sounds more like a Method2 mod than a Method1 mod imo. To what extent is this different from M2 anyway? btw I have always used Method2, and voted make M3.
19. Thanks. I did visit the site with the benchmarks, and i tried the 'experiment' myself with Opera and Firefox. As I suspected, my results did not reflect those on the site. I 'cleaned up' the chart from the site, so its only Firefox and Opera. Cold Start Firefox roughly 4 seconds, I also use 23 extensions including a 3 day forecast (forecastfox). Opera about 2 seconds. Rendering CSS Firefox 1st time 1109ms, 2nd time 719ms, 3rd time 734ms. Opera 1st time 1110ms, 2nd time 1078ms, 3rd time 1047ms. Script speed I cannot give 'accurate' results here for 2 reasons. On test 2 Firefox opens a new window for each of the 8 popups, this means 8x23 extensions = 8 seconds. Opera unlike Firefox took about 10 seconds TO LOAD TEST 1, yet this doesnt appear in the results. I was able to repeat this behavior after clearing the cache. Nevertheless, I got roughly 6 seconds to complete the test with Opera, and 17 seconds with Firefox. History I did not bother to repeat this test, because it is sort of redundant and long to do. Opera doesnt unload pages from its cache, therefore it doesnt re-render them. However i wish to point out that while initially loading the pages the rendering difference is insignificant, its only obvious when going back and forward to pages already 'downloaded'. If you hit the refresh button, it will take the same amount of time as does Firefox. I agree those features arent in Firefox, but doesnt mean they arent availible. *Voice Command Isnt this built into Windows? *Customization Firefox and Opera allow about the same control over customization by themselves. Firefox though, has extensions like menuedit, compactmenu, cutemenu, etc. Where is the customization in Opera better? *Mouse Gestures All-in-one Gestures Mouse Gestures *Kiosk Mode OpenKiosk Autohide Almost Full Screen Full Screen xKiosk *Fast Forward Link Toolbar Rewind/Fastforward Buttons *Session Saving SessionSaver link1 link2 *Notes QuickNote *Mail Thunderbird w/ MinimizeToTray Mail Notifier A's Yahoo! mail notifier Gmail Notifier *Chat ? use a seperate program ? 20. This could be very useful! http://www.debugmode.com/wink/
21. ^ @Aegis can you back up anything you said? I tried Opera and the only thing it does better than Firefox imo is Smooth Scrolling. When some people mention Opera and page rendering they're refering to loading pages that are already cached, and were talking only 0.5 seconds. It doesnt load new pages any better or faster in my experience, in fact Opera fails to load alot of website. But what and where are these plethora of features that i missed? Btw dont really mean to put you on the spot, but alot of people like to just assert something without backing it up. I think alot of people are neglecting to look at the Extensions availible for Firefox. These deliver incredible features that really let the user experience the web as they want to an extent no other software that can match. btw cool article: How Firefox Works @ howstuffworks.com http://computer.howstuffworks.com/firefox.htm/printable
22. best spoof ever.
23. Version 3.50 beta 3 Bugs fixed: 1. "Find" window toolbar ignored the current theme and always used default icons; 2. if all files in some archive subfolder were selected before starting "Extract To" command in WinRAR GUI shell, it could also unpack files from parent folder. http://www.rarlabs.com/rar/wrar35b3.exe
24. Biet-O-Zilla
25. not really sure why that would happen, but its simple to remove: Go to the installation directory of the application. Delete both SRC and GIF/PNG files for each search plugin. Restart the application and deleted plugins will disappear. btw you can add a ton of different ones: http://mycroft.mozdev.org/download.html
