  1. One thing that irritates me to no end in other communities; it's when someone asks a question and instead of answering the question, the answerer rebukes with another question. "Why do you want to use twenty year old technology? Either get with the times or be left behind."

Here's some food for thought. Either answer the question at hand or don't say anything at all. You don't need to know my reason for using retro technology for the sake of telling me I'm old fashion and refuse to get with the times. I never could understand why others feel the need to act superior because they choose to use the "latest and greatest".

I totally agree with you, I'd say it's just basic etiquette to not say anything if you don't know the answer, especially if all you were going to say otherwise is to steer the topic in a completely irrelevant direction.

If something works for someone, it works, doesn't matter if it's old or new.

This is simple , most just don't know the answer yet want to look "smart".

First that start then start link news articles that recommends against using that specific technology and say that prove you should not.

I remember one board where person was asking help to enable fileshare between Windows 98 and Windows 10 and instead of answering that you need to toggle legacy SMB support from add remove software answers were that "you need to isolate it" and then link article how hacker was gaining access to internal network using unpatched computer. I was searching that topic for one friend who wanted bridge old and new tech together. Eventually ended up finding answer by fiddling around Windows 10 and found it had to be enabled. And yet friend network has not been hacked

I agree with @Dixel on this that they try to look smart but they just make themself look dumb.

  2. Time for my next complaint! Even Google can't seem to answer this one.

This is another one that follows the mobile trend. I'm very much aware this "word", or abbreviation, has existed way before mobile technology really even became a thing. But for the love of God, why do people absolutely LOVE saying the word "app" so much?

This is a word I feel like people get ultimate pleasure in saying, particularly out loud. Listen to just about anything anymore, "blah blah blah......and DOWNLOAD OUR APP!!!" :thumbdown

Okay, I get it, you want people to download your free program because it makes your content better for them or something. But do you have to say it constantly, over and over again? I'm sorry, but the word isn't cool anymore. I never thought it was anyway, but now it's the most overused and abused word in technology. I think it's just one of those words though that people who know next to nothing about technology or how it works to sound hip. It's kind of like 4G LTE. I hear that all the time, even out of the mouths of regular people. Exactly how many people even know what LTE means or stands for? Probably nobody.

But to get back to what I was originally talking about. Until smartphones became a thing, I almost never heard people call something an app. When referencing something on the computer, it was either an application, a program, or web browser, a word processor, well you get the idea. Things used to differ from each other. Games used to be games. Now everything is all consolidated into one term, app. Even Microsoft wasn't happy until they cashed in on that word. Programs was used for many, many years in Windows. But what happens once it moves into the mobile era? "That no longer works.....All Apps...yep, sounds good."

So the too long, don't read version. I'm tired of that word, no it doesn't sound hip, and no, it doesn't make you sound like a tech professional. No wonder new technology is so boring now.

    Now I feel better! :thumbup

LTE=Long term extensions (recently changed to evolution) as you probably know, and LTE seems to be a tiny upgrade for the moment because cellular companies cant agree on what exactly 5G is.

  3. One thing I could never understand: Why do some websites INSIST on letting you know someone posted with a mobile device? They don't make a special note letting people know you posted via PC, so why is mobile so special? Facebook used to be really bad with this but as the years went on, they dropped it. But to be honest, I couldn't care less that you posted something with your precious phone. To me, all I see in "Posted via mobile" means, "Look at me, I'm cool! I have a phone! :w00t:"

I still use full sentences, even when I send text messages.  So it take me a long time to type.

Although, I'm a bit disappointed as your HP isn't very specific on make, model number, social security numbers, bank account numbers, your mom's maiden name, etc.

  4. The web is anything but innovative. Once one site comes up with an idea, the rest follow like sheep and copy it. How is it innovative when all sites look and feel the same?

One thing that's just a bit of an annoyance to me and it has to do with Invision Power Board. Just because YouTube/Google went to a letter based avatar system in absence of your own custom avatar, it will just use the first letter of your username. Please tell me WHY IPB had to copy that idea??

@jaclaz, I couldn't view that website at work but I took a look at it just now and that's exactly what I'm talking about! Sure, it's not "pretty" and "fancy", but it definitely gets the point across, right?? And I bet even a 28.8kbps connection could load that up pretty fast.

With big companies quickly adapting and making changes.. how bad of a situation are we looking at when a new startup with a new idea for a socializing platform or anything else really for the web is to have their original idea be copied with the less effort and more heavily funded larger companies? Are we in a state of "there's no point to this anymore"? I haven't been watching this scene of developments on the web but from what I hear from people it's a kind of reality we now live in- to an extent perhaps...

no, I would pick rather Win8 if I had the choice between Win8 and Win9x. Those old OS versions are so crap.

  9. It just kills me how a lot of people 'accept' Windows 8's removed features, especially the start menu. You guys are happy paying money for a 'new' version of Windows when the previous version had more useful stuff in it than the new one? Did Microsoft lose sight of what a computer is really meant for, specifically getting things done in a timely fashion? It's stupid how people are all "Oh my god!!! It's paving the way to the future! Accept it...

    1. xpclient

Exactly. I cannot tolerate it either. Windows 7 is a sane proper desktop OS. For a tablet, I can understand but even then the Metro design is ugly. For computers, the desktop side of Windows 8 is a REGRESSION. There aren't any improvements, there are only huge steps back,

Exactly!!! I just showed it to my fiancee and she's appalled by it. She said Windows was just fine as it was. I hope Microsoft learns from this blunder if they do release another Windows version.

  10. I'm glad you agree!! I don't think Microsoft has made a real OS since XP truthfully.

  11. Has anyone else noticed that when companies run out of new ideas, they just make their new product 'shiner' and possibly add a small feature and yet people have to quickly run out and buy it because it's 'new'? Do I need Windows 8? Absolutely not. Windows 2000, with the help of blackwingcat and tomasz86, still serves my computing needs perfectly. I do not need to pay an extra $100+ for stupid looking menus and a new ribbon interface. Seriously?? You call Windows 8 new...

They add some features and in case of Windows 8, they remove just as many useful features. BASTARDS.

The one that truly gets me is the fact that they removed the start menu and in it's place, they put a stupid full screen menu. Can anyone say....home screen? It's trying to look like a cell phone which I despise to begin with. They could leave Windows looking like Windows 98 for all I care, just as long as it was useful, stable, and did what you needed to do.
