  1. One thing that irritates me to no end in other communities; it's when someone asks a question and instead of answering the question, the answerer rebukes with another question. "Why do you want to use twenty year old technology? Either get with the times or be left behind."

Here's some food for thought. Either answer the question at hand or don't say anything at all. You don't need to know my reason for using retro technology for the sake of telling me I'm old fashion and refuse to get with the times. I never could understand why others feel the need to act superior because they choose to use the "latest and greatest".

Mine came from looking online for specific reasons for why something wouldn't work and I'd run into a few search results where someone would ask the very question I had so I'd click on it thinking maybe I'd get some sort of answer and instead: "Why would you run that on your network? It's years out of date!"

Again, either answer the question of how to fix it, explain why it won't work, or just don't say anything at all. I think it's a relatively simple concept! But you are right, I'm sure it's the need to control others and make themselves feel superior for their own choices in life.

  2. I will forever miss the Bill Gates' Microsoft and the personal computing decade from 1995-2005. Those were happier times for Windows users.

I miss when Windows gave the user control over their own machine and allowed them to customize it as they saw fit, and it wasn't preloaded with a whole bunch of garbage right after installation.

  3. Back when I tried Mint with Xfce, this was as close to Windows as I could get it. But not a single desktop environment with folders as cascading menus+search, and a case sensitive file system were deal-breakers that made me switch back to Windows.CdF4z0t.png

Linux is so much more than just the GUI. That was one of my frustrations as well. I didn't like the case sensitive file system, I didn't mind the terminal too much but I'm used being able to download an executable and it launches an install wizard but you don't get a lot of that in Linux. I mean most of the time there's some sort of set up procedure but I don't want to go through terminal or software center to do it. I want to double click on the file to get it going. I also don't like how the desktop works. I haven't found how to create effective shortcuts. I think that's what it was, I can't remember. It was something to do with when you'd put something on the desktop that it didn't always show up on the actual desktop and that was annoying. Q4OS was the one closest to Windows I've ever tried and it's pretty good for what it is, I haven't tried the newer versions so I can't say what it's like now but the pre version 3 releases are pretty good. But even that was a bit too different in order for me to use full time. I have no qualms with open or shared source and understand that Linux is a totally different beast from Windows, but I feel as if Linux is still more of an internet browsing OS that can run open source software, but it's not for those who need to run specific applications. Advanced networking is also a nightmare. I have my own Windows Domain on my network with custom group policies in effect. But I couldn't even get Fedora on the domain where I could log in even after following a bunch of walkthroughs online. So for what it's worth...Linux isn't bad, but it's just not for me full time.

  4. One thing I could never understand: Why do some websites INSIST on letting you know someone posted with a mobile device? They don't make a special note letting people know you posted via PC, so why is mobile so special? Facebook used to be really bad with this but as the years went on, they dropped it. But to be honest, I couldn't care less that you posted something with your precious phone. To me, all I see in "Posted via mobile" means, "Look at me, I'm cool! I have a phone! :w00t:"

Although, I'm a bit disappointed as your HP isn't very specific on make, model number, social security numbers, bank account numbers, your mom's maiden name, etc.

  5. When will Microsoft actually start listening to the people? Guess never, at this rate. Windows 10 is designed to be a dumbed down, cash cow for folks who just want the latest stuff and trust MS to keep things in check. Good luck with that!

      Tommy

They don't want to listen to people, they want to do what they want to do. Gone are the days of giving the people what they want, now they want to follow the crowd and do their own thing regardless if it works or not.

That's actually some interesting insight you've posted there. Since most mobile users don't really bother to use proper grammar or spelling, it could be there to basically say "I'm lazy" as well.

But in all actuality, I even see such "signatures" on forums that let you know, "Hey, I posted this from my phone!" I usually only see those as spam messages because it adds nothing to the conversation.

But you're right, those keyboards are very small. The only mobile thing I've ever owned was a second generation iPod Touch which is quite useless anymore even updated with Whited00r. But I've always hated the thing because it never does what I want it to, either it's taking you to things you never really touched but because your finger just happened to land on it while scrolling, you have to hurry up and hit stop your browser otherwise it screws you up and takes you someplace else. And I'm a proficient typist on a PC. I can go upwards of 150 WPM but those things, they drive me crazy. Human fingers were never meant to try typing on a thing so small so that's the one thing I one finger at and it takes me forever to get out a simple email message so I don't use it often at all. But get me on a regular keyboard and I go like wildfire! I've even had people at my work be like, "What the hell man??" since I'm just in my little cubical clacking away like nobody's business. XD

A little story before I wrap this up. I was at a friend's house long ago, back when stuff like AIM was still popular and used often. She wanted me to try it out and type to her friend and so I did. However, I used correct grammar and she's like, "What are you doing?" Apparently I was suppose to not use capitals or periods. I told her I wasn't illiterate and that using the correct style of writing was what I did. I'm certainly not perfect, but I can't see turning my brain off either just for the sake of being fast.

  7. Can I say that still Windows XP the best OS ever?

    1. Tommy

      Tommy

I'm not quite sure what you mean that it's really outdated. Are you talking in terms of it being less secure? If you want to really get technical, even the latest versions of Windows are still based off of the original NT core which was released several decades ago. So maybe Windows 10 is still outdated because it's using an old core. I'm not sure how you can still call it Windows NT since it's not really new technology anymore but basically patches built upon patches. Maybe it's time for Microsoft to completely scrap all its old code and build a brand new OS from the ground up. :dubbio:A house built in the early 1900s is still a house from the 1900s even if you put it new flooring, give it a new paint job, put in new windows. You're improving it, but it's still old.

  8. Can I say that still Windows XP the best OS ever?

    1. Tommy

      Tommy

@burd Actually, your statement is incorrect. :dubbio:

The only time something becomes outdated and obsolete is when it no longer meets your needs and requirements. If you're doing heavy internet/high security/mission critical tasks, then for your needs, especially security, it's definitely outdated. However, if you only use it to play games and maybe some light internet browsing on trusted sites, then more than likely it suits your needs and is not obsolete. But I sure can't see upgrading to Windows 10 if your computer is nothing more than a huge, electronic typewriter.

Also, he's actually more than welcome to say that Windows XP is the best OS ever. That is his opinion. My opinion is Windows 2000 is the best OS ever. For my personal needs, the Windows NT 6.x line is just plain overkill and I feel it is overkill in general. Removed compatibility and supercharged system requirements is absolutely ridiculous. Windows 7 is basically Windows XP on steroids but with a lot of older features and compatibility removed.

      @AMB

Yes, you can say that Windows XP is the greatest OS ever. As I said above, that is your opinion and you're entitled to your opinion. My personal opinion is that Windows 10 is crap because it's trying way too hard to be a mobile style OS. I hate how Microsoft is trying to cash in on the much overly abused word in technology, apps. I can see they were going for a hybrid OS type deal but I think that's the wrong approach and they should be two separate things. For one thing, I can't stand change for the sake of change. Most of what Microsoft had, worked just fine. Things were easy to find. Now, the control panel is a mess. It's not very user friendly to previous Windows users. I think the flattened and dull Windows theme is disgusting and putrid and as I said, the OS is going through an identity crisis. It's trying to be Windows but at the same time it's trying to be a bit more like Mac and Linux combined as well as a mobile system. I do not like one size fits all schemes and that's what Windows 10 is trying to do. Some say it runs really fast. I say it depends on what you're running it on. I was working on a customer laptop that had a Celeron processor on it, but it was designed for Windows 8. They apparently took advantage of the free Windows 10 upgrade and to me, that thing ran slower than a snail. Even after I did routine maintenance on it, it ran slow and the processor was pushed quite hard many times. If you had all compatible drivers, I'm sure putting XP on the laptop would've been incredibly fast and usable.

  9. I agree with Tommy, haven't seen nothing original on the net in a long time. I'm tempted to leave the computer world altogether. Stuff gets boring after while.

      Tommy

You couldn't be more right. I remember when computers used to be fun and exciting. Now it's all about...blandness and just pushing upgrades left and right. And now for the most part, home use for computers have gone to where people think "famous" screenshots with words are funny....or watching videos that have no point or meaning and laughing at it like it's the funniest thing in the world. Maybe that's why we love older things, because it reminds us of a better time in general.

@jaclaz, I couldn't view that website at work but I took a look at it just now and that's exactly what I'm talking about! Sure, it's not "pretty" and "fancy", but it definitely gets the point across, right?? And I bet even a 28.8kbps connection could load that up pretty fast.

One thing that's just a bit of an annoyance to me and it has to do with Invision Power Board. Just because YouTube/Google went to a letter based avatar system in absence of your own custom avatar, it will just use the first letter of your username. Please tell me WHY IPB had to copy that idea??

For sure. I like going to older sites because it feels so fast and what they call, fluid. If they think the websites of today are "fluid", they have another thing coming. I have Charter internet so I have the 60mbps connection. But if webmasters cleaned up their code and got rid of all the nonsense and simplified, the web would run much smoother and you wouldn't have as many problems. But not many people consider simplifying as a way of being better.

You're absolutely right on that. That's part of planned obsolescence. Having bloated websites, bad code, all that requires stronger, faster, and more memory capable computers to run. As I always said, I don't care about the design of the website, I care about the quality of the information it delivers. Even on a fast connection and fast computer, I still get the occasional script has hung up error. No reason for that all!

I'm sure he will. This happened once before for whatever reason. I think it gets messed up when I log in because the initial landing page is in Danish and even though I'm part Danish, I can't read a bit of it. lol But when I asked xper about it before, he said he had received the donation nonetheless. So I just don't get to show it off that I had done that but that's not a big deal, the big deal is keeping this place up and running.

I'm not against progress, but I'm definitely against planned obsolescence. But I guess we can mostly thank the flashy fancy web for that. I'd rather have quality content on a white background than a 100MB per page website any day of the week.
