[Help] - Problem when converting NTFS to FAT32 - [Resolved]
tap52384 replied to pauluk83's topic in Windows XP
Why convert from ntfs to fat32? Is it for compatibility with Linux or Windows 98? Other than those two reasons, I don't see a point. Unlocker just released a new version also. -
Installing from a rescue partition
tap52384 replied to Stone_age's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
I also want to know how to do this...I think that would probably be one of the most useful features a computer could have...I wonder is it also possible to add an option to the boot menu to start the recovery, either by using the ntfs bootloader or even better the BIOS. -
How do I get rid of the Sasser virus?
tap52384 replied to MrMister's topic in Malware Prevention and Security
Hasn't the sasser vulnerability been plugged several times over? Windows XP SP2 should have fixed that, I believe. If you do have the virus, the shutdown dialog should count down stating that some illegal procedure closed lsass.exe and gives you 60 seconds before rebooting. Go to start --> run --> type "shutdown -a" to abort the shutdown and then I recommend running the previously recommended removal tools, Ad-aware SE, and Spybot. I still find that strange though... -
What CAN and what CANNOT be compressed in I386
tap52384 replied to Halfwalker's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
The only file that I paid attention to out of the uncompressed bunch was winntbbu.dll, which is responsible for the setup billboard. I hypothesize that the files that are uncompressed are needed for setup itself, and thus cannot be compressed; simultaneously, I assume that nLite possibly removes some of these files and setup works just fine. Therefore, perhaps there could be some option to zip uncompressed files into some archive until needed. Also, speaking of compression, I wonder what type of compression nLite uses and if 7zip's 7z technology could somehow be incorporated--7zip's compression algorithm has proved invaluable in my unattended cd creation quest and my limitation of placing everything within a 700 MB image. -

Try ShellExView - http://www.nirsoft.net

Did you use nLite on this installation? I had that problem during the summer, and I believe it was due to disabling the creation of file names for windows 3.1 compatibility or removing 16-bit support. Possibly even both. The disabling of the shofter file names is a registry tweak, and I'm not sure if nLite itself supports it.

UXTheme Multi-Patcher Unattended
tap52384 replied to PryGuy's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
It's so much easier to simply prepatch uxtheme.dll and then put it into your windows xp cd. -
What is your preferred AntiSpyware app?
tap52384 replied to BoardBabe's topic in Application Installs
Spybot - Search & Destroy in conjunction with Ad-aware SE Personal really does a wonderful job. However, it can't hurt to also include HijackThis for finding those browser specific threats and hidden installed services. -

Unattended install not asking for cd key
tap52384 replied to Bry's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
The easiest way to do that would be to leave off the product key entirely, but that wouldn't solve the problem of showing yours by default...maybe you could enter it wrong in the last character. Here's a stretch: Try making a setup billboard with your cd key on it so you won't forget it. Making a billboard is pretty trivial, so maybe that could help. -
I installed the applet, and noticed that it uses installshield to not only automatically install the .net framework if needed, but installs it as well...Is anyone aware of how this is done, and could obviously share that knowledge? I have an application I would like to install that requires the framework.
-
I ran into that problem tonight actually...It just requires that you reset the "shell" default value to the word "none" (w/o quotes); what i means is that you journey in the registry editor to: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\Shell HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory for the default value for both of these keys, change to the word "none". That way, the default action would be to simply open the folder.

Unfortunately, EditPad Lite doesn't compare. Crimson Editor even came with the idea of a replacement for notepad so that if you typed notepad at the command line the application would open...pure genius.

My Thinkpad R31 cannot read DVDs, but thanks to NLite & 7zip, I'm able to still fit all of the applications I want: 1) Crimson Editor 2) Microsoft Office 2003 3) Adobe Photoshop 7 4) .Net Framework 1.1 SP1 5) Lavasoft Ad-aware SE 6) Spybot - Search & Destroy 7) Mozilla Firefox 1.5 Beta 2 8) AOL Instant Messenger + cmd to remove AOL Explorer 9) DeadAim 4.5 10) UberIcon 1.0 11) Inno Setup 5, ISTool 12) Nero Burning Rom Plugin (WMP9) 13) Rainlendar 14) RecordNow! 15) SyncToy 16) K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 1.38 17) CCleaner 1.24 18) Diskeeper 9.0 Pro 19) Symantec Antivirus 10 20) Konfabulator 2.1.1 21) mp3DirectCut 2.0 Beta 22) WS_FTP 6.0 LE 23) nLite 1.0 RC1 24) Python 2.4 25) My Tunes Redux 26) Google Desktop 2 Beta 27) 7zip 4.29 Beta 28) Oracle Calendar 10.0.1.1 29) Oracle Calendar Connector for Outlook 30) Adobe Reader 7.0.3 31) Java Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5 32) Console 1.5 (@ sourceforge, front end for command prompt) 33) AR System 6 (work application) 34) SoundCapture 35) TweakUI 36) PowerToy Calculator 37) ClearType Tuner PowerToy 38) DVD Profiler 39) OpenAFS 1.3.8 At the moment, I have successfully been able to shrink Office 2K3, just unable to get it to install successfully. Additionally, Crimson Editor needs an update pronto. It's line-highlighting and tabulated features are useful, but the word wrap is somewhat warped, among other known bugs they haven't bothered to fix since 2004. I would switch back to Notepad2 in a heartbeat if it had tabs. At any rate, all of these applications are installed unattended, after 7zip coming to a mere 428 MB. Combined with the nLited XP source, the grand total comes to just 638 MB, enough room to add something else that could come my way.

You could also buy a drive caddy (from IBM or eBay), which will slide right into your ultrabay slot on the side of your computer. I use that for my hard drive...unfortunately, I don't know where I can buy another hard drive that would fit this caddy for cheap...

In start.cmd, wouldn't using start /wait make it pause on whatever executable file he calls?

drscouse, from the way the script is currently written, a reboot would only allow it to complete the currently written registry entries in the RunOnceEx key. I imagine (hope nevertheless) that this could work: REG ADD %KEY%\020 /VE /D "Block List Manager v2.5.3" /f REG ADD %KEY%\020 /V 1 /D "%I%Blocklist\Blocklist_Manager.exe" /f REG ADD %KEY%\020 /V 2 /D "REGEDIT /S %I%RegFiles\BLMSetting.reg" /f #this is the line that creates a new window, clears current RunOnceEx entries, I believe REG ADD %KEY%\020 /V 3 /D "rundll32.exe iernonce.dll,RunOnceExProcess" /f REG ADD %KEY% /V TITLE /D "Installing Programs" /f In theory, I think that this way, you should be able to reboot and the different windows are still created as planned. Try it out and let me know.
-
I think this information about customizing RunOnceEx should be added to http://unattended.msfn.org. Speaking of which, are there any planned updates to that site? There are some things that could be added, like nLite specifics, a permanent home for registry tweaks, and an updated list of necessities for installations, like popular codec packages and silent installation switches.

yoz7120, I tried your method with unquestionable success; instead of placing all of the keys in the registry at the T-12 stage of an XP installation, you create the registry keys on-the-fly for each category. It's genius, but I have two questions: 1) Why not zip up all of your applications into a self-extracting archive using 7zip? Reluctantly, I'll admit that I use an IBM Thinkpad R31 that did not come with a DVD capable drive. Thus, I use Nlite (big props to Nuhi, by the way) to reduce the source to 212.39 MB (no IE!), and then use the remaining space to include a great deal of programs, with the exception of Microsoft Office and Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003. Additionally, I copy the self-extracting archive to the root of the C: drive using the OEMPreInstall option in winnt.sif, since I figured an install using the hard drive is faster than that from a DVD or CD. 2) Although his method works perfectly, is this the only way to do it, or is it possible to actually have it work by completely using registry entries?

The code that Zxian posted won't create a second window with a different title than the original one...instead, "category 1" and "category 2" are instead names of the items being installed...
-
That makes two of us.
-
The list isn't updated in real-time; instead, a window can categorize the types of programs that are being installed. For example, the first window could install burning and ripping software (and have such as the title) and the next could be instant messaging software, etc.
