  1. Hi, all. Only 1 update for those with Windows XP SP3 this month. The other 3 updates released this month (July 2008) are for other software and/or SP2 and prior. Also added a non-security update for people with device manager and networking problems after sp3. So, download and it and feel secure for another month.
  2. now that's a sweet keyboard. yeah, pricey. will see if i can afford but that would be exactly what i would be looking for so i don't have to have a separate mouse.
  3. nope. i abandoned vista. good old xp!
  4. I have great reason to believe it is stored as a stream in the registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams\Desktop. At least in windows 2000, but it might be similar for xp.
  5. forgot about keyboard and mouse - although i wouldn't want a huge keyboard for media pc, any small compact wireless with mouse built-in (like a track ball)?
  6. the shortcut was probably deleted. shortcuts also don't delete themselves but it could be a program like desktop unused icon cleanup. to locate word, go to c:\program files\microsoft office\office11\winword.exe or c:\program files\microsoft office\office12\winword.exe (or 2003 or 2007). Also change c:\ to your windows system drive if it is something different.
  7. Crahak, can you point me to one so I can look at specs, then compare those with other boards so I can choose? Also, I'll probably use like PowerDVD or Media Player Classic for viewing.
  8. Hey, all. I needed some guidance building a Media PC that will play hi-def movies. My TV (Samsung plasma 50'') has a PC input and I use my laptop to view movies currently. But I want a dedicated desktop. Here's where I need guidance as I've never built a micro-ATX PC before: This is mainly for media - videos and perhaps photo slideshows (not for editing videos, gaming, etc) - so I don't need premium products and premium hardware - good enough is okay. 1) A good micro-ATX case that's small. I want to be able to access the DVD drive easily though. 2) Motherboard - any good ones that you know of, as long as it runs cool... 3) Minimum video card for HD movies 4) If you know of any remote controllers (note I'm not looking at Windows Media Center - just plain XP) I'll be streaming movies from my main desktop or playing from a DVD drive. Don't worry about Networking, DVD and HDD - I got that covered. Any help appreciated.
  9. download tweakui and click on repair icon cache. it's worth a try although i think it may not work because the icons you mention are shell icons rather than program/shortcut icons. if it doesn't work, the problem might be the resolution of the icons you replaced. if it's too high resolution than win2000 can handle, it might revert to the low resolution one.
  10. How did you fix the desktop-right-click "view" menu item missing problem? What registry key (it will help others that have a similar problem)? I can't remember if that menu item existed for me so I can't say if it disappeared after I installed SP3. However, I still have the "Arrange Icons by". And the tooltips on mouse hover still works for me for folders and files in explorer.
  11. sp3 is behind-the-scenes security updates. doesn't hurt to install it. if you've got a legit, nothing to worry about wga. i'd go for it simply because of security updates and nap and some say of performance gains. although i haven't seen a performance gain (NOR a loss), on a clean install, i have noticed faster boot time on my virtual pc's.
  12. excellent point. i thought about that but thought since it's 160 gb, it's probably in an enclosure with an external power supply and certainly he has it plugged in since it's working on other computers. however, i'm unsure if usb 2.0 provides more power than usb 1.0.
  13. does "duplicate finder" not compare file version? if it relies just on the name of file and not the file version, i wouldn't trust the program.
  14. some usb drive makers don't even supply drivers since xp has native support for usb mass storage devices. here are a few things you can try: 1) go to the manufacturer site and see if they have drivers you can download. usually found in downloads or support section of their site. 2) If you don't find drivers on their website, try googling for drivers from the model number. 3) If still no go, then you may need to purchase a USB 2.0 PCI card.
  15. excellent tip. will see if it works. it's necessary for imagex scripts since they require admin privileges.
  16. I don't where I found this link but I found it here somewhere: http://arniworld.de/downloads.htm, and I stumbled upon of the greatest extensions to Windows Explorer: The AWXTOOLBAR. See image. This is one of those, I can't believe I needed this all along! You see the notepad icon right next to the open menu? Well, that nifty icon will open notepad if no file is selected. If you select a file (.txt, .doc, .log, .xml etc), then it will open that file in notepad. Of course, .doc files will be garbled up. And the icon before the open menu - that's a "Create New Folder" icon, the one that Windows has been missing in the toolbar all this time.
  17. Thanks. I started that thread since I couldn't find the list here.
  18. Just like windows uninstall info is stored in the Windows folder and you can delete all this if you don't need to uninstall it, where is the Office updates uninstall info stored? I do believe it is stored somewhere as it shows up in Add/Remove Programs. Thanks.
  19. Thank you. That solved the problem: More specifically, I copied batt.dll (which was missing from my system32 folder) from my original CD. For some reason, it did not copy during the installation process. Thanks again.

  21. the title says post-sp3 update list 7 so far but where is the list? where are the links to the updates?
  22. on a similar tone, is it safe to delete sp2.cab on an installation updated to sp3? what i mean is, can i safely delete c:\windows\driver cache\i386\sp2.cab? what about drivers.cab?
  23. wow - a self proclaimed advanced user! i already know about the double-clicking. it's good to have options, buddy. i'm glad you're NOT programming software - it would have two options - on and off.
  24. virtualbox by sun... supports usb functions, which ms vpc does not.
  25. Well if you still have doubts about the order, take a look at this: http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=1849&page=4 which was referenced in this thread: http://www.msfn.org/board/XP-Pro-SP3-IE7-D...no-t119474.html.
