  1. Have you tried searching in MSFN WinPE section? It is certainly possible, much much easier that installing XP. Just have a look there.
  2. I had installed Comodo Firewall 3.0 on an XP SP2 laptop. Everything went okay. Then, I tried to run Winrar from C:\Apps\Winrar folder. When I ran the app, a dialog from Comodo came up asking me what to do. However, there were several windows open, so this popup went in the background. However, it was half available (meaning that I could see some of the radio buttons, but it wouldn't fully become visible - almost like it was crashing). But I managed to tell it to treat it as a Trusted Application. But then, Winrar wouldn't run. Whenever I double-click on Winrar, windows would say invalid 32-bit application. I tried several methods but wouldn't work. Then I disable Defense+ from the right-click menu of tray icon (I didn't shutdown Comodo). Winrar ran fine. I enable Defense+ again and winrar wouldn't run. I looked through all the options and even added Winrar as a trusted application but nothing would let me run winrar. Explorer 7 was already open, and noticed there was a new build so I went online and downloaded a patch upgrade and put it on C:\. I tried to run the patch, and same thing - invalid Win 32 application. I couldn't even move the downloaded patch to another folder. So, now I'm trying to run any application and all apps from start menu say application not found. Double-clicking on the executables say invalid win 32 application. So, now I'm mad. I shutdown Comodo Firewall by right-click and exit. Now, it wouldn't even let me restart the computer saying I don't have permission to shut down. So I logged off - it at least let me log off. Then I restarted from the login page and it restarted, but Comodo Firewall remained off. It did not come back on, no tray icon. I couldn't even run it from program files - invalid win 32 app. I booted from BartPE and wiped out the Comodo folder from program files. Restarted and still no go. MY SYSTEM IS SCREWED THANKS TO COMODO FIREWALL 3.0! I really trusted the program. I'm not sure what triggered this behaviour.
  3. this is an old topic, i know, that got lost in follow up. anyway, the reason i wanted to know was i was trying to customize the default profile so that whoever logs on, i don't have to set the explorer toolbar, cleartype, theme, etc., etc. etc. i think i can accomplish this by copying ntuser.dat from userprofile to default user profile during setup, am i not right? I mean when all my registry settings have been incorporated and the computer is about to reboot from gui setup. i guess that's t-13 or t-12.
  4. yes, disconnect pata, install on sata, then reconnect pata. should work as mentioned.
  5. Creating the 2003 toolbar buttons wouldn't take too long but creating the 2003 menus (file, edit, insert, etc) would take forever. It's a daunting task. Maybe if I have free time, who knows...
  6. For the first image, you do a capture. For the second image, you append it to the first. Thus, you'll be using /capture switch the first time, then the /append switch the second time. Someone's created a gimagex (gui based imagex). Run over to winpe section and you'll find lots of info there.
  7. I'm sorry, I don't know the answer to your question. Windows Mail for Vista is very flawed and very slow. It's basically outlook express with a makeover. However, I do recommend you upgrade to Windows Mail Live. It's much much better and faster. It supports gmail accounts and hotmail accounts synchronizing.
  8. Newegg (www.newegg.com) - the most (camera, processor, memory, etc). I've also used: www.zipzoomfly.com to order a motherboard twice www.pcrush.com to order a printer once I always use www.pricegrabber.com first for price comparison on products I'm interested in.
  9. I think is has to be an MSI or MSP in order to install from the updates folder. I don't use OCP so I'm not sure how it's provided. If it's an EXE, try to unpack it and see if you get an MSI or MSP.
  10. Dude, vista transformation pack allows you to directly modify the setup files. Have you tried that yet? When you run the installed, it asks you that option - to transform the install source instead of the actual XP that is installed.
  11. grldr now can boot iso's. however, you probably won't be able to start vista setup because you lose the Cd drive that is emulated during setup. Same for XP. I've tried Acronis disk director iso and it works fine.
  12. windows help ... search for command line reference a to z. basics are there.
  13. Shouldn't the messages go away after the learning period is over? I think it observes what you do and displays the messages and after some period, the message will decrease.
  14. You can actually make your own menu tab to look like office 2003 toolbar if you are willing to spend a bit of time -- lots of time. I don't know how it's done for excel and powerpoint but I know how for word. for word, normal.dotm is used. I'm not sure what's used for excel and powerpoint.
  15. It's been posted here before. All it does is add a tab called Menus. It's actually a modified ribbon with a Menu tab that has the familiar 2003 toolbar buttons. It's a nice concept for those learning the new and still need the old. It probably has an option to remove the other tabs and keep only the menu tab.
  16. I use ImageX. Free from MS. I actually make an image of a base install with all drivers. Then I install all apps, then take another image. Advantage of ImageX is you can store multiple images in one file and it optimizes the image such that duplicate files are not stored twice. So two images doesn't mean twice the file size. Only the changed and newer files are added to the image. Imaging can be done from within windows xp. If you want to recover, however, you'll need winpe or bartpe as you will need to format the drive.
  17. Does the Eee have a CD-ROM drive? I thought it was too small for it. I've heard of people installing Vista because it can be installed from USB. Are you attempting XP install from USB? Or maybe an external USB CD-ROM drive? Let us know how you accomplish this, please. Thanks.
  18. this is pretty cool. is there something similar for hiding folders?
  19. First, do you know where your SATA drivers are? You need to find the drivers first as XP does not have SATA drivers built in. Usually, your SATA drivers are provided on your motherboard drivers CD. Find these first. Then, there are two options for XP to recognize your SATA drivers. 1) First, you need to copy these drivers to a floppy. The txtsetup.oem file goes in the root of the floppy. Leave everything as is. When XP setup starts, it will display a message that says "Press F6 to load third party drivers..." or something like that for 2 - 3 seconds. You need press F6. Then, after XP loads the built in drivers, it will ask you to insert the floppy. Insert it. Then it'll ask you to choose the device. Choose the device. If the drivers were correct, then XP will display that drive as an option to install XP to. 2) Alternate way is to integrate the drivers using nLite so you won't have to press F6. It shouldn't bee too hard. Just follow directions with nLite.
  20. ASUS - motherboard manufacturer, amongst other things (Eee for e.g.)
  21. It's impossible to please everyone. You may deem print, email, save important vs someone else. Use my link to customizing the ribbon to add those buttons. It shouldn't be that hard to accomplish just that. I do admit that MS made programming the ribbon extremely hard.
  22. The script works, Yzowl. Thanks. Obviously, I can't use long filenames with spaces - there was only one I had in the list and I used the 8.3 format to circumvent this problem. I added "Tokens=2" to your FOR command to get the compressed files - seems to work okay. One question though: what does the 2>NUL do and >NUL do? It seems to prevent the confirmation that the file was copied or not copied.
  23. The programmability of the ribbon is much more extensive than it seems on the surface with callback. Although I'm not a programmer, I've changed the ribbon to suite my needs. See link below for customizing your ribbon. I got rid of the styles that you are talking about. And I created my own new tab. Also, the print, save, print preview, email, etc. can be put on the mini toolbar (at the top) easily IF you look for customizing it. Anything can be put on the mini toolbar at the top. It is only YOUR opinion that you don't like the ribbon. It took me but a week to get used to it and realize I can find things faster with the ribbon than the old 2003, especially in Access 2007. Access 2007 is much much improved over 2003. Anyway, this forum is to GET HELP, not rant about what you like and dislike. Oh yeah, I wouldn't call it a "disaster", call it a "resistance to change".
  24. Here's what I'm trying to do: I want to collect system files (copy them) to a temp folder in order to reshack them. The list of files are in a text file called files.txt. Th e location of the files are in either windows or system32 folder. The files.txt also includes the compressed form so I can also extract them from an ISO automatically. Here's what my text file looks like. files.txt (Partial list) %windir%\explorer.exe explorer.ex_ %windir%\system32\taskmgr.exe taskmgr.ex_ %windir%\system32\shell32.dll shell32.dl_ The first column in text file lists the location where I want the file to come from. The second column is the compressed form in ISO. Thus, I'm using the tokens=1 command to specify the first column to collect system files, and tokens=2 to extract from ISO. Here is the batch script I use to collect files (copy them) to a temp location. collect_files.cmd cd /d %~dp0 if not exist Collected_Files md Collected_Files DEL "%cd%\Collected_Files\*.*" /q for /F "Tokens=1" %%i IN ('FINDSTR "." files.txt') DO Call :copyfiles "%%i" goto :exit :copyfiles copy %1 "%cd%\Collected_Files" :exit The line I need help with is "for /F "Tokens=1" %%i IN ('FINDSTR "." files.txt') DO Call :copyfiles "%%i"". This works perfectly without errors, but I'm not sure if 'FINDSTR "." files.txt' is the correct way of doing it. Is there a better way of going down the list of first column than using "."?
  25. check the filenames to see if they are uppercase or lowercase. i used to get that error for usbehci.sys b/c it was lowercase. it wanted it to be uppercase. i changed it to USBEHCI.SYS and no errors.
