Can a directory be hidden by reg key or ne script?
Synapse replied to skinless's topic in Windows XP
ok... i think i got your best solution, but it doesn't prevent against deletion... and its kinda slow... also any folders you have in there can be easily opened but the files themselves can't be without the password. example... test.zip +stuff 1 +picture1.jpg +picture2.jpg when someone clicks test.zip, they see Stuff 1 *folder*, then they see Picture 1 and 2 but when they try to view the picture it asks for a password. only way i see getting rid of that is to after adding the password to the folder rename it to like test.exe or whatever and hide it in a windows folder where you can remeber. then rename it back to .zip whenever you wanna access the data. On windows XP, make a New (Compressed) Zip by right clicking on the desktop or where ever and hitting New -> Compressed Zip.... IF that option isn't there then you have something like winzip or something else associated with .zip files... unassociate .zip files with whatever zip program you maybe using.. and then run this command at start -> Run regsvr32 zipfldr.dll you'll have to restart after this and i know how you HATE restarting lol. this should turn back on windows xp's default built-in zip. now you should have the option to make the compressed folders. once you make the folder if its nothing important MOVE the files in there. if it is important stuff, make a backup onto a cd and hide it well. just incase.... after all the files are moved in there hit file -> add a password... that should do it.. also, I think if its a game or soemthing your hiding it would have to unextract it all to play so i see a time as being a problem. and not sure about this, but when your done with your game or whatever and move the files back into this folder you must hit add a password again to password the game or whatever again. -
since this is in the Windows XP thread i'm guessing the computers are running windows xp... if so only possible way without getting an external program from the net would be Net Send. and thats only if the messenger service is turned on.. if this is windows ME and below, theres a program with windows called WinPopup. used that in school once but only problem was there were computers running windows NT, when i or my friend would send an IM all the Windows NT machines would get the message and display it much like that of the messenger service dialog... another possible way.. is to use Netmeeting. that comes with most windows. you also said.. microsoft word.. what htey maybe doing is just saving over the file.. example... I have the file up for sharing, full access with a password. you come in and change the word document and save it. i reopen it and it shows your text, and just keep doing that.

easiest way would be a virtual machine.. or if you have 2 hard drives makes 1 windows xp and 1 linux, whenever you wanna boot linux unplug the windows hard drive and visa-versa. I tried to dual boot Windows and Linux on the same hard drive, i got so confused i said screw it. after about 30 minutes in linux i said not worth it and put windows back on lol.

Can a directory be hidden by reg key or ne script?
Synapse replied to skinless's topic in Windows XP
where to add this ??? thats the DOS command for applying the Hidden attribute to the folder of your choice. same as hitting the check mark on the folder properties for hiding. not very secure cause all someone would have to do is hit show all hidden files and folders. If you were on Windows ME and below i would suggest what my friend and i did at school to hide our games from the teacher... we made a folder names Tech Data but not with a space using alt+255 (we used diffrent numbers such as 216 for me and 241 for him.) had to type it in DOS though. also... 255 is the highest number you can use. and i think only 200-255 work. *ONLY WORKS WITH WINDOWS ME AND BELOW* (maybe Windows Me.. not sure..) only throwing this out there if anyone wants/needs this info. at dos (to make the folder) cd\ cd progra~1 md tech(alt+255)data exit to access we would go back to dos and type cd\ cd progra~1 rename tech(alt+255)data data exit and to lock the folder we would go back to dos and type cd\ cd progra~1 rename data tech(alt+255)data exit once locked, the folder couldn't be deleted, shared, renamed, accessed in anyways unless someone has made a program to get around this. I was once stupid and made these batch files... but that kinda defeated the purpose of having them locked lol. so these had to be typed up everytime. another solution, but doesn't seem your very computer litterate so i wouldn't suggest doing this. *no offense* but format the hard drive to 2 partions and then use a reg setting to change the drive to invisible. not sure about the setting though. its been a while since i've had to do that. and the drive can still be accessed using DOS and other file browsing programs... so thats not secure too. -
hmm... nevermind i deleted the cookies. apparently deleteing cookies from the internet explorer tools doesn't work on my computer... could a mod delete this post? sorry

500 Kilometers is about 300 miles correct? I don't think you should have any problems. if you do it's probably only a delay of about 1-2 seconds if that. I've talked to people from San Jose Cali. to people in England. sounded fine. If this is the VoIP i'm thinking of (Voice over Internet Protocal). I would suggest just using Ventrilo or Teamspeak both are free but you have to run your own server or connect to someone elses server. Ventrilo only has a limitation of 8 per server if its the free version gotta get someone else to host if more then 8. but its great sound quality. Teamspeak allows you to change the codecs and speeds. but as a result you lose sound quality. example.. the 2.3 or whatever codec uses less bandwidth but lose sound quality, the 9.1 or whatever uses more bandwidth but sounds better. this is only if your only gonna be talking to a couple people. if your going to be hosting. i don't know...

seen it but still funny am i the only one that sees it all crappy? probably just a problem with one of my codecs if so...

well... looked at my router and it has a bunch of sites in it that anyone goes to on our network... I was wondering if theres a way that i can block the log in my Netgear router from being displayed in there. I was thinking of even copying and pasting all the code from the router and save all the pages host it on my server and change the IP of the router. but without doing that.. does anyone know of an easier method? Thanks B) *EDIT* without blocking the entire router.. cause my dad needs access to the router...
-
why would you need a hosts file thats really big... sure i can see it for blocking certain bad websites from installing stuff on yourc omputer etc... but just don tgo to those sites and you'll be fine. I only got 3 entries in my hosts file and thats to stop the audio/video ads in AIM.

run a crossover cable between the 2 computers *this is if you don't have a hub or router* and make sure you have file and print sharing turned on on both computers. also.. check the IP addresses, subnets and workgroup. that should put ya in business.

what would you charge for pc repair reates, etc...
Synapse replied to ceez's topic in General Discussion
I was thinking about doing this myself, however i hate doing things on site. i was going to charge about 25 bucks an hour and they drop the computer off at my house, i repair it and log time started and time finished and call them up when its fixed to have them pick it up. however...things like networking is an onsite job. i think most people will go by that price. I had one lady pay me 60 bucks because she couldn't find out how to unmute her computer.. lol. She offered 80 but i wouldnt' accept it. she was a friend of mines mom... so i would've done it for free. I told her i did it for free.. she said alright. she then gave the 60 bucks to my friend and had him slip it in my wallet when i wasn't looking lol. -
better..?

maybe i'm wrong.. but shouldn't msvbvm60.dll be put in the folder that is copied over to windows\system? so that this app will run. without that file you get "msvbvm60.dll wasn't found" error message. also not sure if that file is there during every install or what... other then that Nice program btw lol, together is misspelled incorrectly in the gui

unattended install using restore disc
Synapse replied to haysdad's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
kinda off topic but.... was it an HP 310n? cause thats what mine was.. well.. until i installed Linux on it and deleted the Restore Partion on accident Fezik, browse your CD while in windows. see if theres 1 file thats like 650 megs or if theres multiple files... My eMachines Restore CD's have 2 .gho files around 650 megs each and only way too view wants in there is too use Norton Ghost. and i think he ment on 1 3 and 5... 1. Windows XP SP2 *download from microsoft.com* thats if you want SP2 * i personally hate it..* 3. I'm guessing he means the slipstreaming it as i've never heard of a Windows XP SP2 boot disk.. 5. Windows XP CD the CD that has windows or your restore CD's
