Well, all inkjet printers have easy to replace cartridges, the whole point is how much do they cost and how often you need to change them. A (B&W) laser printer is relatively cheap and it's cartridge (toner+drum) is relatively pricey BUT will last with no problems whatsoever for an impressive number of prints. A (color) inkjet printer is so cheap that they could give it two of them as change when you buy a set of it's cartridges, which will last for a small number of prints and are relatively expensive. Once upon a time when you bought an inkjet printer they gave you with it a full set of cartridges, nowadays the cartridges included are "fakes" with 1/4 or 1/5 of the ink of a "full priced" cartridge. To this you add that you need the special photo paper to print decently an image and that probably you'll need two or three print tests each time you print a picture (if you want a good result), that usually a cartridge becomes empty just aroud half the printing of the "final" and that half of the prints that you normally do have no need for colour (but the original is colourful anyway, think at all the web pages you may happen to print). Personally - being notoriously cheap - I have all (B&W) laser printers and when I have to print a picture I have it printed by a service. Read this: http://www.smallbusinesscomputing.com/testdrive/article.php/3521141/Inkjet-Versus-Laser-Printers.htm (mind you the article is aimed to small businesses, but the underlying math makes sense even in a home environment) This is a similar one more targeted to home use: http://www.digital-photography-school.com/printers-laser-vs-inkjet It all depends on the type and amount of your printing needs, the only senceful advice is : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097216/quotes?qt=qt0362962 jaclaz

What software do you have installed on Win9x?
jaclaz replied to ScrewUpgrading's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Well, there are a few ways to get back the DOS. http://www.dewassoc.com/support/winme/real_dos.htm http://www.reocities.com/mfd4life_2000/ The SFP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/253571/en-us has a re-known solution: http://www.mdgx.com/me1.htm#UPH http://erpman1.tripod.com/current/sfpoff.htm additionally it seems like the list of files is in a file sfpdb.sfp and system.cat http://support.microsoft.com/kb/267282/en-us I presume that given there is enough interest in it (which I doubt) someone could use the same kind of tricks were used for 2K and XP WFP and have a "limited" amount of checked files. Turning off System Restore: http://www.onecomputerguy.com/me_tips.htm http://www.onecomputerguy.com/me_tips.htm#system_restore So, WHAT is the problem? jaclaz -
No doubt that you have a LEGAL copy of Windows Me. But are you REALLY SURE it is NOT an OEM version? If it is an OEM one, it may quickly become a LEGAL copy of it that you have ILLEGALLY installed close to 49 times.... jaclaz

It depends also on your environment. If you are wearing wool or nylon/polyester clothes and sneakers, and the room you work in has a carpet, it is possible that you charge yourself with a zillion volts. If you are bare-footed, wear cotton clothes and the room has a concrete pavement, you are simply inherently grounded. BUT having an equipotential connection to the device ground is good anyway, as long as the device is also grounded. jaclaz

All in all sounds like a problem with the CD/DVD drive. (the current ones I mean) The missing NTLDR has nothing to do with it, though. Simply get the UBCD: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ and see: if it boots on that machine run the appropriate manufacturer tool for the HD If the CD/DVD drive is flaky, besides replacing it, you can attempt a good ol' DOS based install, this way you can re-attempt copying to the internal hard disk files that have problems during the copy before starting the actual install. A rough guide is here: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=16713 Or youmay want to go the USB way: http://www.msfn.org/board/forum/157-install-windows-from-usb/ jaclaz

doesn't seem to be a problem for those using a legal version. Actually - and just for the record - it should be even less a problem for those using a cracked one. jaclaz

How to install Windows from USB- WinSetupFromUSB with GUI
jaclaz replied to ilko_t's topic in Install Windows from USB
Sure it is possible, as said in the form of grub.exe grub4dos is a Linux kernel (besides being a DOS program), all you need is to add to your Syslinux booting thingy the grub.exe and possibly a modified menu.lst. You are welcome. jaclaz -
You mean a mentally affected or the "ugly, unattractive, and creepy looking" Screwupgrading was talking about? Also, "mental condition" may mean everything and the opposite of it. And NO, I don't want to know which particular illness (being it mental or physical) you might be suffering from, I don't think this (MSFN) is the right place to talk about such conditions. jaclaz

I cannot really see the connection between a mentally ill and his/her looks. jaclaz

Well, maybe those Web sites are illegal BECAUSE they provide pirated copies of non-free OS. BTW you would probably have the same kind of issues attempting to run a Win9x on such a machine. Compare with: and with some of the threads listed here: If you have a network card and a hub (and the modem is actually a router, NOT a USB connected modem) you may have some (very small chances). The best thing you can do is to try first in a VM inside your "normal" OS. jaclaz

jaclaz replied to lapetite66's topic in Windows XP
HOW do you know that? I mean WHERE/HOW did you test that particular CD/DVD build BEFORE this attempt? In ANY case, try again with only the CD/DVD drive and the SATA drive to which you want to install, you can re-add the other HDD's after completing (hopefully) successfully the install. jaclaz -
What software do you have installed on Win9x?
jaclaz replied to ScrewUpgrading's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Naaah, it wasn't/isn't AS bad AS most people try to depict it, as I see it it has a lot of nice features , but it suffered IMHO from: like all MS products, initial instability, usually fixed after a short time by a SP1 (that never was released for Me) it never really got the numbers to make a "critical mass" impact, and most software vendors and programmers (generally speaking) never got around using the added capabilities, most things you now run on Me were developed and tested on Windows 98 only and only by chance they do work allright on Me too it was "compressed" (not unlike Windows 2K, but to a far greater extent) by the immediately following release of XP and the senseless pushing for XP Home edition by MS on every OEM machine it was - initially at least - seen as a joke by the good ol' DOS lovers, due to the direct booting in GUI mode the "typical" users were (necessarily) the people who bought it pre-installed in a OEM PC, seriously I never knew anyone which actually bought a "Full install" version these "typical users" - again very understandably - as soon as they got their brand new machines, installed on them a few zillions softwares as said developed and perfectly working on Win9x OS, but that were not truly tested on Me, thus increasing the instabilities of the System, or at least its perceived instabilities So all in all it was/is an AS good AS Win98 OS, but with a far smaller user base, expecially among the peeps that - like most MSFN members do - are interested in the innards of the OS, in tricks and tweaks and what not. I have a good ol' ASUS mini-notebook with Me on it, and I never had actual problems with it (though I actually use that particular PC only rarely and when I do I normally use the other OS that I have installed to it, which is 2K). When I run for tests a DOS based GUI OS I tend also to use a Win98SE system. Good. I am sure that with this approach you will get far more useful replies . jaclaz -
How to install Windows from USB- WinSetupFromUSB with GUI
jaclaz replied to ilko_t's topic in Install Windows from USB
Yes, but I don't still see WHY you want to REPLACE grub4dos, maybe it would be easier to integrate the result of WinsetupfromUSB into your Syslinux based thingy. The multipartiioning is only needed (talking of WinsetupfromUSB) if you need several Vista :ph34r:/7 /Server 2008 versions. grub4dos can be chainloaded by Syslinux allright, like (example): So, all you have to do should be to use Syslinux to load the thingy as is (instead of having grub4dos being the "main" bootloader/bootmanager). jaclaz -
1) No. 2) The answer, my friend is blowing in the wind. (how do you think we can do the remote mind reading needed to understand WHAT is your new PC and HOW the heck you have it connected to DSL? ) For the 2nd question a Standard Litany is needed: http://homepages.tesco.net/J.deBoynePollard/FGA/problem-report-standard-litany.html jaclaz

Lots of them, rest assured. Beside using REG.EXE (old school) you can use the MS redistributable Oflline Registrry editing DLL: http://reboot.pro/11212/ http://reboot.pro/11312/ Or maybe from DOS (+ a NTFS driver) the Paul Lee thingy: http://paullee.ru/regstry.html cannot remember if it has a command line mode.... jaclaz

SETUPLDR Couldn’t open drive(0) multi(0) disk(0) rddisk(0) partition(1
jaclaz replied to lapetite66's topic in Windows XP
The "Press any key to bot form CD" ONLY happens if the Setup detects an already initialized hard disk, cannot say if you are in this condition. Can you check, and re-check the cables? Is your internal hard disk a SATA one? Is the (internal) CD/DVD a SATA or an IDE/PATA one? HOW exactly did you configure BIOS? WHICH EXACT motherboard model is it? (Crystal ball out to the shop for maintenance ) etc., etc. Standard Litany: http://homepages.tesco.net/J.deBoynePollard/FGA/problem-report-standard-litany.html (the more info you give - details are important -, the more likely someone may be able to give you appropriate advice) jaclaz -
How to install Windows from USB- WinSetupFromUSB with GUI
jaclaz replied to ilko_t's topic in Install Windows from USB
Yes/No. http://homepages.tesco.net/J.deBoynePollard/FGA/questions-with-yes-or-no-answers.html The question in itself it's not dumb at all (exception made for the way you asked it ), but I guess you should at least mention WHY anyone should want to modify a working app (at the risk of introducing bugs/problems/issues). Mind you I am not saying it is possible or not, though form the little I kow of Syslinux/Memdisk, etc. it has IMHO some less flexibility in re-mapping drives, which is conversely one of the needed features for the WinSetupfromUSB and that grub4dos provides flawlessly) I mean WHAT advantages would you expect in using Syslinux instead of grub4dos? jaclaz -
What software do you have installed on Win9x?
jaclaz replied to ScrewUpgrading's topic in Windows 9x/ME
HIt right on the nail , though a Windows Me is nothing but a bettered Win98 (only worse ) it has some features that are NOT in a "plain" - even if updated - Win98 and possibly not even in a hybridized Win98. Additionally "Win9x" also includes Windows 95 that has also some different features/possibilities, or so I am told by the 2 (two) people that still run it daily . Let's assume that numbers are (talking of frequent members of MSFN who actually run mainly or often Win9x/Me): People running a "plain" - but updated - Win98 (EACH one with a slightly different number of settings/tweaks/updates/what not) : A few tens. People running a Win98 hybrid with Me (EACH one with a slightly different number of settings/tweaks/updates/what not): A few tens. People running Me: 3 People running 95: 2 Evan if possibly not entirely accurate , the above numbers show how the intended audience might be different. jaclaz -

But your thread title is about Win9x. I mean, do you accept ideas from BOTH Win9x AND Me users or you just want to meet the other 3 (three) persons in the world that run normally Windows Me? jaclaz -
"Quotes" Question about CMD Batch
jaclaz replied to Caml Light's topic in Programming (C++, Delphi, VB/VBS, CMD/batch, etc.)
And, AGAIN, can you post an example of a POPULATED by the actual fles directory structure? Can you READ my previous post? Do you understand that until now what you propose is to process first all 7-zip compressed files (or ZIPped, you posted CONTRASTING info on this) and later all "normal" SFX .exe files (or the other way round first all the .exe's and then all the .7z's) and that this may not be a smart move as it may alter the proper order in which the updates should be installed? jaclaz -

How to install Windows from USB- WinSetupFromUSB with GUI
jaclaz replied to ilko_t's topic in Install Windows from USB
It is likely that you are using a (probably nlited) NON-ORIGINAL version of the Source from which some needed files were removed. (or somehow the source is corrupted/unreadable) You cannot use the 0.2.3 with such a source, you can try with 1.0 beta7, but probably you will have to try with this approach : jaclaz -
"Quotes" Question about CMD Batch
jaclaz replied to Caml Light's topic in Programming (C++, Delphi, VB/VBS, CMD/batch, etc.)
Well, for the record not really, no. It is a condition you imposed. The issue I see is that if you have EITHER: ONLY non-zipped files OR: ONLY zipped files THEN the file name sort sequential processing MAY make sense, BUT if you have a "mixed set of files" the order in which they are processed may well become a BIG problem. In such a setup I would rather use a verified sorted list instead. jaclaz -

FACTS (or personal opinions? ): there is NOT ANY need to make anything BUT a single pass AND the advised method is using the internal ATA commands: http://www.zdnet.com/blog/storage/how-to-really-erase-a-hard-drive/129 http://cmrr.ucsd.edu/people/Hughes/SecureErase.shtml the EASIEST way to save as much data as possible is to use this tool: http://reboot.pro/7783/ in the way it is described here: http://reboot.pro/15040/page__st__8 there is NO WAY (IF the disk is actually defective) that you can SECURELY (in the real sense of the world) wipe it, you won't know WHAT happens on those sectors that you cannot access before the wiping takes place: they could be either already unreadable/unrecoverable OR they may be perfectly recoverable the chances that any DELL employee will take the time and effort to attempt recovering you precious personal data (let alone succeed at it ) are 0 (as in zero/nihil) jaclaz -
"Quotes" Question about CMD Batch
jaclaz replied to Caml Light's topic in Programming (C++, Delphi, VB/VBS, CMD/batch, etc.)
MUCH better than before , but not yet enough. Let's do it like this , prepare on a drive your source files EXACTLY as you wish to use them, let's say they are in a directory under root like "C:\teststructure" (containing directly or inside subdirectories a sample of the files you wish to use), then run: DIR /S C:\teststructure>C:\mystructure.txt zip the resulting C:\mystructure.txt and attach the zipped file. jaclaz
