  1. 1. Karnac The Magnificent just sent me an e-mail, and he was quite upset and p***ed off by your assuming he wouldn't have understood that, he expressely said how it took him a split nanosecond (and not a million years). The meaning of "before" is that point 1 does NOT belong to the scene and needs NOT (and should NOT) be graphically represented in it, point 1 happens BEFORE and OUTSIDE the animated scene, rest assured that I perfectly know how to provoke such a reaction on the other part verbally . I have to make my compliments to you for your analysis and creativity about point 1, that is a lucid, intelligent, well thought-out layout. Overruled. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104952/quotes?qt=qt0404534 2. OK 3. OK 4. OK, the red brick is perfect! 5. OK 6. OK. For "surprised" see if either of these would do. 7. OK As an alternative for the "ducking" and "re-appearing" in #6 and #7 one could use the "squeezing" movement that you can find in this emoticon (of course without the bar clamp) . Thanks for the time you spend on this small project . jaclaz
  2. The good thing about crystal balls (even not perfectly tuned ones) is that I saw it coming in advance : Find a friend that knows how to use Photoshop, provide him with some good pictures of what the heck you want/like and you can have a skin exactly as you want it in very little time. jaclaz
  3. What you report is VERY strange (possibly in India after sale service is much better than anywhere else ) . It would be the first case ever reported of Seagate: offering itself for a firmware upgrade offering itself for a firmware upgrade without data loss Experiences reported on this forum are that: Seagate may offer itself to replace the disk drive (with NO guarantee whatsoever about data) Seagate telling the user to upgrade himself/herself the firmware (if the drive is not bricked) Seagate telling to contact i365 (their data recovery "branch") and i365 offering itself - on a case by case basis - to recover the data for free or against the payment or a rather high amount of money In any case, whatever Seagate (or whomever acting as Seagate representative) did to that drive, you did your best to lessen the probabilities of ANY data recovery from it. What do you want to do now? Possibilities: contact again Seagate (or i365) and ask them to attempt recovering the data attempt a DIY recover In both cases, if I were you, and if the disk is not in BSY or LBA0 state, I would first try to have a forensic sound image of the drive (you will need a new drive slightly larger than the original one, typcally a 640 or 750 Gb one). The Forum is full of examples on how to make such an image, a couple ones: jaclaz
  4. Anyone can multiply a "mere" 2,000,000 units reduction (in a two month expected timeframe) by rough unit sell price of US$ 500.00 and plot the trend for 2013? jaclaz
  5. Oh, oh. Rhetorical question detected OT but not much anyone has any news about the CRVD (or a similar device)? It was all over the net a couple years ago and now it is MIA, even if google still sees: on http://www.ostendo.com/ there is no trace of it (compare with a Wayback Machine snapshot from 2010) http://web.archive.org/web/20100420025511/http://www.ostendo.com/ jaclaz
  6. Check here: http://xion.r2.com.au/ http://xion.r2.com.au/page/skins/category/12 http://xion.r2.com.au/page/skins/category/13 if there is anything of your liking (or just make a skin yourself ) A couple out of the many: http://xion.r2.com.au/page/skins/id/754 http://xion.r2.com.au/page/skins/id/753 jaclaz

  8. No, an actual fbinst install is MUCH more complex than that, and it's behaviour/goals/whatever are actually documented/described: I was talking of a "plain" MBR code such as the 2K/XP/2003 or the Vista :ph34r:/7/2008 one (or even the good ol' DOS one) or something like partita or MBLDR (the latter is very, very good in my experience): My "base" assumption about the minimim number of neurons a BIOS programmer must have are explained in more details in the (already given) link: http://reboot.pro/index.php?showtopic=10503 (that you are kindly requested to read) jaclaz
  9. @Trip JFYI, PWboot could be an alternative ("Live 7" but on USB, not CD/DVD): Make_PE3 can be found - among other places- here (not very far from this thread): Winbuilder projects, in this case Win7PE_SE, can be found here: http://reboot.pro/forum/91-win7pe/ and/or here: http://theoven.org/index.php?board=20.0 jaclaz
  10. Some reference to chocolate covered bananas and XYZ kind of problems: http://homepage.ntlworld.com./jonathan.deboynepollard/FGA/put-down-the-chocolate-covered-banana.html and to the Standard Litany (needed but completely missing in this thread): http://homepage.ntlworld.com./jonathan.deboynepollard/FGA/problem-report-standard-litany.html jaclaz
  11. Is it me or you used an unreadable (tiny) font size? Can you set ti to "normal"? jaclaz
  12. Yep , the "PC caught on fire and school data was on the water soaked hard drive" could be added as corollary to #32 here: http://www.jobprofiles.org/library/students/the-ferris-bueller.htm More seriously it is UNlikely that water actually entered the mechanical part of the HDD, so, yes drying the disk in the oven at 60° is perfectly "sound" . jaclaz
  13. Maybe if you actually post your batch, someone can find what is wrong with it (and no, the PATH has nothing to do with it). jaclaz
  14. As a matter of fact I wasn't at the time that much impressed by the Start button of Windows 95/NT4. I came (like everyone else) from Windows 3.11, but I had on most machines Norton Desktop that provided a nice "mac like" kind of interface to it. What I remember as "astounding" was when i first installed (from floppies!) a Windows 95 Beta were the graphics of the installer, can you remember those bluish images that flickered on your screen at night hinting hidden future marvels such as the MS ergonomic keyboard, CD's and strange new cables, with the buzzing of the floppy drive accessing sectors chanting a lullaby in the background .... of course, as often happens, things that happened when you were some twenty years younger tend to have an augmented aura of mystics when remembered.... jaclaz
  15. The modem must be put in "waiting mode", it is described in the article (still AT commands), it may work or may not without the ring/line voltage, the rest is "connection wizard" http://www.maturion.de/dreamcast/mterlouw/inconect.htm on 9x it is "Dial-up server": http://www.maturion.de/dreamcast/mterlouw/configpc.htm jaclaz
  16. But you didn't ask for answers or tools, you asked for ideas instead: anyway a suitable tool has been suggested, DMDE: http://softdm.com/ (and yes, I know that next post will be asking an "automagic" tool capable of fixing those names ) Maybe fsutil would do: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/fsutil_file.mspx?mfr=true cannot say if it works on dirctories as well jaclaz
  17. The funny thing is that when it came out, you were 14 or so , and most probably you would have considered it "cool" . If anyone needs/wants (BTW WHY?) to see it in all it's aberration, a number of educative screenshots are available here: http://toastytech.com/guis/bob.html And yes, BOB is also "responsible" for Comic Sans MS: and consequent slow suicides and for some of the senseless characters of the animated help in later versions such as "rover", BTW - and this says a lot of things about the Patent Office - the thingy has been patented: http://nbnl.globalwhelming.com/2009/01/05/14-microsofts-weird-animated-characters-patents-you-have-never-seen-before/ http://www.google.com/patents/US5682469 jaclaz
  18. I would say very close. The actual power consumption, once detracted the amount of light emitted by the actual screen (which should be more or less a constant for a given "type" of display, i.e. LCD vs. LED vs. Plasma ) all goes away as "heat". As an example, given that MarkJohnson's current display: is 27" in size uses 67 watts of power when fully lit is a LED monitor replacing it with this one that uses roughly 40W: http://www.aocmonitorap.com/root/anz/product_display.php?id=35 will need to add a 30W heater to get the same temperature in the room http://www.rittal-corp.com/products/product_details.cfm?n1Id=4&n2Id=20&n3Id=33&pn=3105330 jaclaz
  19. I edited the previous post, numbering the questions. Right now we have ONLY 1/6th of the answers (not counting the unanswered questions in the previous post) : jaclaz
  20. Hmmm. What EXACTLY have you attempted in the RC? Can you try with a more "complete" environment such as a PE? Have you tried renaming including a "forbidden" char in the filename? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/142982/en-us Have you tried using Unlocker (or a similar tool) to allow the renaming in the "fully booted" OS? (beware, risk of crash ) http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/Unlocker.shtml How EXACTLY were the filenames destroyed? Do the short filenames appear for newly made files/directories in the running system? In the worst case you can still manually hex-write them with a tool like DMDE. (you will need to know where your towel is ) jaclaz
  21. What is the output of DIR /X ? Is it a NTFS filesystem? What is the content of HKLM\\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem\NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation (if any?) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/210638/en-us jaclaz
  22. I have not the graphic capabilities to produce a storyboard, a textual screenplay should do anyway . There are two characters: Sarcasm (in the following abbreviated to S) Victim (in the following abbreviated to V) The scene is a "transparent background". Before the scene takes place S has said something sarcatic, naughty, snappy, provoking, catty etc. to V. The scene opens on S (on the left) that is therefore whistling trying to look innocent/indifferent/detached. V is obviously upset/angry/exasperated at S and enters the scene (from the right) in such an altered status of mind . Suddenly V extracts an object (the object could be a ball, but better a knife or a pie) and throws it towards S. S who was only seemingly minding his own business but actually very attentive to the movements of V, quickly ducks, thus making the thrown object miss him (the object may end it's trajectory outside the scene or splat/crash on a "wall" on the very left side of the scene). V is surprised and deluded of having missed his intended target and exits sadly the scene on the right. S straightens up with a large smile on his face (having successfully avoided to have been hit) and optionally either shows his tongue in mocking fashion at V or downright mocks him explicitly The scope is to convey the idea that what has been said by S is intentionally (and jokingly) said to provoke a reaction from V . Now, for NO apparent reason : jaclaz
  23. There are actually already all the answers needed (with the exception made for the specific results of a direct test of the fbinst formatting to the specific machine). fbinst is an exceptionally good tool , that achieves almost (if not fully) 100% bootability on *any* system. In order to achieve this exceptionally good results it goes - in several ways - beyond and well over "common standards". A stick partiioned/formatted/prepared with fbinst is a VERY good solution if - like in the case of WinsetupfromUSB it is an "install media", or if you prefer it is used in a "format once and forget about it" approach. Still, since it goes out of the said "common standards" it is incompatible with a number of tools (particularly "Commercial" and "Easy to use" ones) related to partitioning/re-partitioning/etc. so it is NOT a good-for-all solution. As a matter of fact also installing the grub4dos grldr.mbr to the MBR (and following few "hidden sectors") is already out of these standards, and this is the reason why (besides the mentioned incompatibilities with some BIOS/Motherboards of the grub4dos MBR code) - normally - I don't suggest the installing of grldr.mbr, but rather using a "common" MBR code that simply loads the Active Primary partition. The above mentioned "incompatibilities" are NOT however a problem for "people that know where their towel is", but the number of really hoopy, froody guys/gals is relatively limited, whilst the number of whiners is exceptionally large, so the warning is nothing more than a preventive measure for the latter peeps, in order to be able when (and they will before or later) come whining because they lost some data or managed to - just after having made the "perfect" ultimate booting thingy - mess it up badly, to tell them: jaclaz
  24. @larryb123456 The .gif produced is very nice . But I have to agree with dencorso (limited to this specific case ). Though normally I am very nice guy , from time to time, and expecially with friends, I like to mock them a little. The "whistling" in itself is already a form of that, but in "severe" cases, the "whistling smiley" needs to avoid the "reaction". The "left" part of the .gif you made is PERFECT (maybe the actual whistling before the ducking could be a little shorter). The "right" part is almost perfect, but the smiley actually smiling after having completely missed the "whistling smiley" kind of spoils the effect. I had expected that the the thrown object would have come "out of nowhere", but I like the idea of the actual thrower entering the field of view, only it must appear already upset (and that is why it throws the object) before throwing the object and frustrated after having thrown it and having missed the target. The "character" that enters from the right must be angry when it enters the field of view, like: and "frustrated/disappointed" when it exits the field of view after having missed the "whistling guy", like: Additionally when the "whistling smiley" comes out again after the ducking it should be extremely satisfied as it managed to both provoke the reaction and avoid the consequences of it, more like: The key to the animation storyboard is that it has to be used when something intentionally provoking, possibly catty, or naughty or absurd has been stated. See here the post that made me think of the *need* of such an emoticon: (Fuwi has since 2008 developed a nice tool - based on the HP USB formatting utility - to properly format/make bootable USB sticks and is thus possibly one of the top experts on the tool and it's behaviour ) http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=21702&hl= Thank you very much for the time that you dedicate to my "queer" requests. jaclaz
  25. Yep, this is a known issue when proprietary (old but still perfectly working) equipment is using ISA. Look at the price of this thingy here (though it could actually be a solution in many cases): http://arstech.com/install/ecom-prodshow/usb2isa.html though seemingly not always "easy-peasy": http://disbauxes.upc.es/?p=2394 jaclaz
