1. saugatak will be removed in next version of fileset: 1,4,5 will probably not be removed in next version: 3 will be removed and appear in a separate inf installer: 2 dirtwarrior - you've seen the site. it's a little buried, but its there.
2. no it didn't. it would lead you here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showforum=129 that's the forum, anyway. to get to the latest version: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=57659 /didn't know gurgelmeyer had implemented dx9 and ie6. very nice. //take your pick i guess, HFSLIP slipstreams, it does not integrate, FWIW
3. saugatak veeerrry slick. i like that. as far as i am aware, you probably don't need to run modifype on the file because you have not actually modified the binary. just makecab alone. TAiN - you can use an alternate shell like litestep, but 1) you won't have a desktop where you can actually move icons and 2) you still cannot completely delete EXPLORER.EXE. this post of mine has a link to a technique a guy used to take care of both #1 and #2.
4. What i do* is make a folder in Program Files called Internet Explorer and put it there. I do this because that's where programs that look for IE expect to discover it. *The reason I do not make this automatic and include the new IEXPLORE in my fileset is because I do not have permission to redistribute it. Johnathan Howell's IEXPLORE.EXE dummy file is here. I need to talk to that MSFN member to get his permission to redistribute this binary. I think it's a program he just made with no licensing terms, IIRC. I emailed him October 16th 2005.
5. 1. install winhtml.inf 2. install the INF from the codebox 3. go to the control panel and look at Automatic Updates, see if: a. it is enabled b. if it lets you make selections c. if it starts to actually work! i have not tried it out yet, busy on other things... anyone care to have a go? no rush, like TAiN points out, we DO have a better option anyway.

hi oleg_ii, just one or the other -- using both is unnecessary. to turn sfc back on, replace whichever one you picked with its original.
7. yeah, i have a few! when i installed, the product wanted to be activated. no prob. we have a volume license. i had a retail version that i'd slipstreamed sp2 with and microsoft assured me on the phone all would be well. it wasn't. after install #3 in refused subsequent installs. another call to microsoft and the techs were saying no, doing that won't work even though yes, the activation people have been saying that volume licensing keys would in fact work (keep in mind this is not corporate ed., this volume license did require a key). well, can you please get these folks to stop telling people this, i asked, as i sighed thinking about the reformatting i had to do. the really sad part? the same thing happened with office xp's activation, only i used the volume license key that time. heh, guess what. but this is about xp. so, continuing on... to my non-delight, i discovered xp tried to be 'helpful' to my nt4 server by converting NTFS 4 to 5.1 without lettin' me know. i'm glad i didn't need to go back to nt4 because xp would bsod on this legacy hardware*. oh, wait, i DID need to go back! fixed with partition magic, but not... very... nice. (*the complaint is NOT with xp causing the BSODs, it was faulty hardware that NT4 was simply more tolerant of. the problem was xp's converting not only the boot volume (that's easy, you can reformat), but every other NTFS 4 volume on the machine. making my server's data temporarily inaccessible.) i installed xp, and when i hit Windows + F to find something, a dog came up! (yeah, i know he can be removed. i hate having to access google to find out which reg key to edit every time i sit at an xp user's machine). i installed xp and like I_Broke_My_MHZ, i also discovered "a big ugly interface that I later learned was known as 'Luna'." (note to Rhelic, 1) it's a horror story nonetheless, doesn't matter what ms thinks the public wants, and 2) i LOVE your avatar, heh heh a friend's laptop slowed to a crawl after uninstalling a few programs. found out about this caching stuff and solved that. not truly horror like the dog, but annoying. once copied the system32 directory to the D:\ drive to do a quick backup and later to my delight i found xp would not let me delete the directory, saying it was protected. from D:\, not the boot drive. 2k never did that. i had to remedy that one with knoppix. when i installed things in xp, it would re-arrange items in my start menu. where's network neighborhood? what is this 'shared files' thing -- where did that come from? i later discovered these were some kinds of 'features.' (hey, this is MY horror story post ) i set up xp in a public place for a group of users and when one went to plug their USB keychain into xp, i found i had to type the admin login and password in order to let them do it. repeat for every single user. didn't have that with win2k! tried to set the security policy for the user group to fix this. never did find that one out. i was too busy being baffled over adding new users and adjusting their account rights which i figured out, but still not the 'giving USB to users' thing. win2k was straightforward. a memory use discussion is going on here. i'm not gonna mention how slow my machine became with that interface running. and terminal services (can i please have a choice whether to run it at boot, perhaps by holding a down down maybe i can skip loading it?*) or how hard it is to remove ie, unlike removing ie from win2k or the defragger always running in the background? i think i can maybe handle defragging myself thanks. that only caused a few DVD coasters til i shut it off with a reg hacj, IIRC. (*yeah, i KNOW terminal services is necessary for the pretty picture login and 'login as alternate user.' but i would expect it to be easily disabled if i don't use these. without having to use nlite.) upgrading some new components? remember to back up your activation data, because you'll have to re-activate. (a new mobo will require a re-installation. you only get a few mobo upgrades, because at some point, believe me, your activation key will no longer be accepted by the ms database). well this was kinda fun. i don't have time to heap more onto my list but i am sure i'll think of more later.... cheers to all and remember this is a horror story thread
8. i'm curious too about dx9c errors. i ran dxdiag and i don't have any. BTW, error_report.txt is generated when HFSLIP runs. if it isn't created, then something hung before you even got around to making the ISO! it would be nice to see this file and know what setup you've got so we can do bugfixing for win2k server. well, anyway, as Oleg_II points out, nobody insists

no, no registry changes are needed! (the old collake hack needed them). my hacked SFC.DLL, SFCFILES.DLL and the nLite-created SFC_OS.DLL all do not need registry entries.
10. as Oleg_II notes, it's not possible that i've seen. (now, before a new arrival to the forum posts that you can "use" this other software, let me say that saugatak and everyone else here means "use instead of, as in totally replace" ) the prob is that the shell makes calls to explorer.exe. there was a guy who went to some extreme lengths and got a shell to work on windows that totally replaced the windows default shell... i cannot recall at all where i posted this note! he even got the desktop to work, which had always been a total impossibility with shell replacements previously. maybe i posted the link in nlite forum, maybe in the original HFSLIP thread... anyway, if anyone wants to run an advanced search that'd be great, it was a post by me and had "internet explorer" and "shell" in it and that's all i recall (sorry, sorry...) i'd like to check back on that guy's project, because this was a few months ago and i bet he's come a long way with his work. shoot now i gotta go looking for a needle in a haystack of my 390 odd posts

New logo to use

http://www.vorck.com/images/hfslip-exroidal.gif i didn't know exroidal had fans! he's very pleased to be the HFSLIP mascot i suppose at this point perhaps we oughta run a photoshop logo contest? i think its probably time. here are the original photoshop elements: http://www.vorck.com/data/hfslip-logo.zip submission deadline? hmm, dunno. how about the end of october? october 31? is that workable? a few things: 1. please, photoshop only, no ms paint or paint shop pro craziness. 2. we want everyone to have input, but... 3. tommyp will be the final yes or no vote as it's his project. 4. all submitters must link to their logo entry (in other words, i won't be hosting it until it wins) so use your ISP's free web space or use a host like http://www.imageshack.us/ 5. don't just put your entry as an upload onto MSFN, that's kind of lazy and anyway it doesn't allow people to just click and see, they have to download and open it and that's no fun anything i missed? get to work, photoshoppers!

What belongs where?

just want to emphasize that if you know people still doing legacy integration with qchain , let them know that it doesn't have to be so painful... HFSLIP could be modified on your own system to slipstream anything in HF, but the whole file renaming thing is supporting a bad habit. it's the old school way of doing things, like horse and buggy, and we welcome those who've done it the hard way and have seen the light as an aside between us here, what baffles me is some of those unattended guys who refuse to even try the software, or worse, tell people it doesn't work when it's pretty freakin' obvious that it does
13. because people still use IE5 shell files that come with the hotfixes, IE5 is still necessary to support when using my IE removal fileset, and the instructions for slipstreaming IE5 are really only a few extra paragraphs anyway. so don't worry support will not be dropped. saugatak - thanks for the text fix (incorrect reference on my site). will make that change as soon as i can. bilou - thanks for the 2003 list. that's a bit of work that makes my life easier. dziubek - good to see you back. please attach your ERROR_REPORT.TXT, that will help. the_guy - a windows 2000 list would be great. the thing is, windows 2000 as Oleg_II notes has a few branches now, windows 2000 with IE5 or IE6 and with DX7 or DX9. your list when started will be pinned at the top of this subforum and you will be trusted by a LOT of people to keep the list meticulously updated. now, i'm not saying this because i don't think you can do it, i just wanted to be sure you appreciate the audience your info will have. to put it another way, before HFSLIP merged with FDV's IE removal project, i got about 150 hits on my site per day (webalizer). it was 12,837 average per day for September... with a significant following from around the world, only a fraction of who actually join MSFN... so what i'm saying is "the pressure's on" all (this part is a repeat from the old thread) Supporting HFSLIP (if you want to -- no offense taken if you don't put this in your sig!) You can put this in your signature of your profile to add an "HFSLIP" icon to the bottom of your posts. This one features Exroidal: or this one is a small one It's small and unobtrusive. Let's get word out about this new forum for October. (These logos eat bandwidth fast with the hundreds of views they get (every one of your posts would now carry the logo in the sig, everywhere on MSFN) so I might take the graphic down in November out of necessity, we'll see.) Again, it's strictly for those who want to -- nothing personal if you don't... Look in the main forum for details on the logo contest.

i don't know if this would work... this DLL is one of the first called on by the system. the file would have to be renamed very early on. also, a leading "z" might be problematic for legacy CD creation fans who want an 8+3 friendly name. perhaps i should include this DLL renamed SFCFILES.OFF in my fileset, then HFSLIP could arrange a renaming? i'll talk with tommyp about this.

Inuse does not work. unless there has been a newer version released? microsoft put the wrong file in it and never fixed their release (imagine that). open the program up with winrar or a similar program and have a look inside the Inuse archive.

i run the BartPE. not sure if there is a better way. because these files get locked, i think using BartPE is probably the best way... (or a simple DOS floppy if you use FAT32).

not sure what's being asked here. you refer to the "real" SFC.EXE but that's not the file we hack. there is the collake hack, which allows SFC to be turned on and off (modifies SFC.DLL). there is the NON-collake hack, which can permanently switch SFC off (also modifies SFC.DLL). side story, history of shutting SFC off a russian friend of mine said that the collake hack was kind of useless to him because SFC switches back ON when the OS first boots, so he created a version that disables SFC.DLL for good. his non-collake hack, documented on my site, has, believe it or not, been picked up all over the world and is now used in several software products that in some cases i am not permitted to name -- yet the guy who wrote the mods to the DLL prefers to go uncredited ah well, that's his choice. there is also a re-written SFCFILES.DLL that empties out the list of protected files. it leaves SFC.DLL untouched, so technically, the system is running checks against an empty list. this method was created for people who don't want to hack files or want to incorporate the source code into their product (the source of my friend's DLL is supplied on my site). this hack was based on the work of Damian Bakowski who made a similar version of this file first (an italian reader directed my attention to damian's site; damian is polish). (this almost sound like some kind of joke... an american, an italian, a russian, and a pole all join forces to shut off system file protection... ) anyway, you can run SFC.EXE with a scannow and non-hacked SFC and SFCFILES to do the file checking thing. i recommend keeping the unhacked SFC.DLL handy in your system32 directory, because i will admit that personally, i HATE it when i install a program and it replaces a bunch of my DLLs. it's not just the legacy apps, either. so, i replace SFC on my system with the original. apologies in advance if this did not answer your question.
18. no, it won't matter. if they were save on FAT16, FAT32, NTFS 4, NTFS 5, whatever... the files will keep their names unless you have a duplicate name that goes past 8 letters, then it will preserve the ~1 convention. in any case, when you're in windows, the naming will be transparent to you. no harm is done to files when removing the 16bit support.
19. hfslip'll do it. i tried it (2003 files) and it worked on my machine. windows 2000, that is. i just use the xp files... dunno why.
20. thanks man can i get a second set of eyes on my win2k3 list? any 2003 users?
21. okay this piqued my interest. this is my favorite defragger too. i have not tried the IE patcher with Norton's software. i would expect you might have problems since it won't install without IE.* (i have a BartPE cd with Paragon Hard Disk Manager installed on it. when i want to really defrag a system, i boot up with it, and run its defragger. since the program acts on the boot drive and nothing on the drive is running, everything gets 100% defragged). but this is tremendously time consuming, and i miss SpeedDisk a LOT. i would love info on how to make this a standalone application. if you have info in the way of needed files and reg edits, please post them! i have systemworks from 2004 i think -- i stopped using it because all i wanted was their defragger (and they know it's the most desired program in the package, that's why they don't permit installing it by itself of course... anyway, post what you've got! *about a year ago or maybe more, there was an MSFN user who created an IEXPLORE.EXE that is about 160Kb and upon first launch, it asks you the path to your preferred browser (Firefox, Opera, Mozilla). after that first launch, this little gem of a program just opens your browser. so, whenever some program thinks its launching IE, the program is happy because it finds IEXPLORE.EXE, and you're happy because it launches what you want. i can post it no problem, but i would love to find the link in the threads. anyone remember this? i'll go hunting. for now, grab it here.

HFSlip & NLite ?

oh, believe me, they work fine together. see step 11? you can run nlite on SOURCESS when you reach that step. in other words, you slipstream ie 5 or 6, media codecs and perhaps player, directx 9, run HFSLIP, then run nLite. there are some folks who prefer to just rip the bloat out of windows in one step -- that's where my files come in. you add them to the directory named after me (this would be instead of using nLite). this removes a TON of junk in one easy step. i suppose i should disclose that i set a bunch of security measures, too... i make it simple to close NetBIOS over TCP/IP (look in NETTCPIP.INF) DCOM will be shut off, preventing possible exploits TCP/IP will be hardened against some DDOS attacks and malformed packet attacks. (I added settings that NIST recommends) Port 135 will be closed by default Scripting exploits and ActiveX exploits simply won't work i turn off remote registry editing service by default i turn off windows 'popup' messenger service by default
23. thanks saugatak for being on the ball when i'm not 2ksp5 and 2003 links edited.
