  1. WOW this thread can move fast sometimes. @pene - 1. add/remove is IE-dependant. see http://www.vorck.com/2ksp5.html#12 for a replacement. see the note under UnClean2 and MyUninstaller. I use UnClean2. 2. Task Scheduler. a system DLL keeps creating the folder, but tries to make calls to the CLSID for Task Scheduler, which is gone, so it comes up with no name. AFAIK there is no way to keep this from being created. I forget if it's SHDOCVW or SHELL32 or what. 3. my files used to remove the IE icon. then, guess what MS did? their new SHDOCVW started placing the icon instead of the IE DLLs. it's just another attempt at system integration. delete manually. i might have a fix for this later. 4. no idea. new to me. never even heard of this. i have DX9 slipstreamed, by the way, not integrated. putting a silent installer DX9 in the HFSVPK folder will integrate rather than slipstream, and you won't have this problem... sorry i took that out of the documentation but that is an option. i'll put it back in. @kreative19 - i am stumped. as long as you are not mixing languages, i dunno. no one else is having any reported problems with outlook. also, no one reports Internet Connection Wizard problems. i hope you aren't trying to use some kind of mix of my files or something. OS2fan uses dialup, now that i think of it, so i call out to... @os2fan - when you slipstream ie6, do you have any issues like kreative19 describes? also, kreative19, be sure to use 8.3 naming when adding programs to HFSVPK or HFSVPK_SW. (i think that rule is still in effect, right?) @Outatouch - sorry man! documentation changes all the time... but you are one of the few who actually reads everything (believe me, that earns you a medal) as for RyanVM, no, HFSLIP is not compatable. it's just the way his fileset is designed. for sh??s and giggles you could put it in the HFCABS folder and keep the HF folder empty (or expand the CAB and put it all into FIX and keep HF empty) and report back to us. it's just that RyanVM uses a different approach, but HFSLIP lets you leave whatever you might not want out.
  2. @kreative19 - you say ALL hotfixes. tell me, you didn't include the IE5 hotfix, did you? wow, just was reading another forum. seems someone takes HFSLIP's meteoric rise so personally. so, we give him a 21 folder solute.
  3. murvun - so.... no problems?
  4. i agree with raskren insofar as his point about hardware, it's probably xp. very nlite'd. i think a requirement should be that you've used all of the major types before voting (i.e. 98, me, xp, 2k, and 2k3, but not necessarily xp home versus xp pro) i'd love to see some benchmarks... i have all three but i really don't want to clean off a machine and virtual pc's are a bad comparison... anyone wanna nlite 2k, xp and 2k3 and do some benchmarking?
  5. jpascal's reading -- his act of heroism -- reminds me that those of us who have been around since the beginning* should be going back and editing posts as information gets out of date. so far, this really applies only to tommyp, me, and bilou, and we have done this, because old discussion and quotes of posts that no longer exist can just confuse new arrivals. as we move forward -- and many of you have been doing this anyway -- please be sure to edit out of your posts things that will never come up again or that become totally irrelevant (no need to delete all the text of course, the goal is just to cut down confusion). this has been fdv's public service message os2fan be sure to let me know what happened with my files and slipstreaming IE6, which is what I currently use as my OS. I checked out bootable cd loader; very cool for old machines, and i do have a bunch, that can't be set to boot from cd. (i have a very cut down win2k running on a pentium one 200MHz with 32Mb RAM for example) all anyone ever tried 7-max to speed up applications? * for those who are new to the thread, this may seem odd, but HFSLIP started life as merely a way to slipstream IE6 into Windows 2000.
  6. hey lupo, how's things... this is a common misconception, that if a patch is for a different edition of the same OS, you couldn't use it. don't worry. no, you don't need it, but if won't hurt if you do throw it in there. HFSLIP will just take the new file and replace the old one even though your version of win2k won't install it. if it can't use it, HFSLIP will just discard the file! pretty cool, huh? B) no harm done either way.
  7. here 'tis thanks BTW for those other proggie suggestions i'll check them out throbr.reg
  8. murvun, i agree with tommyp's assessment. it sounds like you are not starting with a win2k that has sp4.
  9. bleh. xp. i hate xp like the pope hates the devil. i'll look into making a slipstreamable tweakui like i did for 2k but for xp but i dunno. dang right you were! i would have built such a thing were it easy. the best thing to do - use my files but delete my IE.IN_ and tell us how it goes. it will probably install with ie intact, but i need someone to test that. as for installing ie after windows is installed, well, that doesn't go very well. hmmm. that's my current os right now. what's going on? i am running a slipstreamed ie6 + dx9c + all ie6 hotfixes. i have only one bug: when i go to "open source folder" in a search box, it does nothing at all. but that's the only thing. bitmaps? you mean thumbnails? bitmaps of .BMP icons and such? that's a few keys and a DLL, which is all buried in my notes. somewhere. if you really want bitmaps back i can find that if you want. you'll probably find it if you scan IE.IN_ for the keys that remove it, and TXTSETUP and LAYOUT for the DLL, it has the words THUMB in it. i think. i dunno it's been a looong time; i think i pulled that file out in my 2k SP3 fileset. let me know what's going on with slipstreaming ie6 and using my files.
  10. @tomcat76, thanks again for the testing, much appreciated. @Outatouch, thanks for suggested edits to the process. @all - i get lost sometimes on what i have to be working on. things in real life like work and hobbies etc make me occasionally forget to address an issue, so if i haven't gotten back to you about something, feel free to PM me. i am still working out an obscure outlook issue. I would also like to add on a random note that I am listening to Achilles' Last Stand by Led Zeppelin. I have not heard this song in a loooong time, and I recommend it highly if you like LZ. This and Carouselambra are a heck of a combination while tooling with HFSLIP.
  11. fOR THOS whoops! stupid caps lock For those who want to go IE free with Gurgelmeyer's work, this set of instructions will yield the fastest results: http://www.vorck.com/2ksp4-basic.html (it says SP4 but can apply to Gurgelmeyer's SP5, which is the result of one of the world's biggest software companies not being able to do their job The link to the main page may create the perception that my files only work with HFSLIP, which is not true, BTW... that is merely a different approach and by no means the only method of patching 2k)
  12. @tomcat76 - thanks for the dx testing. as for 894320, i'd recommend to everyone that web view should always be turned off. it's a file that forces explorer to open .htt files whenever it encounters them... not really something microsoft thought out. I'd switch off webview, unreg the file, delete it, and then delete the following keys: HKCR,"TypeLib\{CD603FC0-1F11-11D1-9E88-00C04FDCAB92}"; webvw.dll decodes .htt files HKCR,"Interface\{BCFD624C-705A-11D2-A2AF-00C04FC30871}"; Webview itself HKLM,"SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{BCFD624C-705A-11D2-A2AF-00C04FC30871}" HKCR,"CLSID\{733AC4CB-F1A4-11d0-B951-00A0C90312E1}"; WebView MIME Filter HKLM,"SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{733AC4CB-F1A4-11d0-B951-00A0C90312E1}" HKCR,"Interface\{21DCE770-ABD0-11D2-A32B-006097DF5BD4}"; Webview FTP HKLM,"SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{21DCE770-ABD0-11D2-A32B-006097DF5BD4}" back up each key by exporting it to your desktop as a .REG if you really want to before deleting. it's Yet Another Instance of Microsoft Patching a Problem of Its Own Making.
  13. @Outatouch - glad you got the slipstream command. DOS may be archaic yeah but some good DOS knowledge always serves you well no matter how far Windows has come ;-) made your suggested change, thanks. Net framework: get the repacked version at the link, RyanVM's. it has all the security updates in it. See a PM from me on the rest. @Tomcat76 - thanks also for your proofing work and change about WGA, and also for the language translations! - RANDOM - Recently, someone took a shot across our collective bow. Now seems like the right time to remind folks: - that HFSLIP is GPL. - that if you suggest a fix in this thread, no one is going to tell you to stop giving input. - other programs may brag that they are more difficult to use and that they cost more, but HFSLIP features enhanced Stain Fighting Power to get your clothes sparkling clean. HFSLIP also tastes like champagne. /sarcasm You can't buy integrity. (Nor can you license it for $25.)
  14. @all - the time has come for some testing. what i want to know for purposes of documentation is "what happens when you try to install an HFSLIP'ped Windows from DOS?" I'd like to know about: 1. Windows 2000 with slipstreamed dx9 2. Windows 2000 with slipstreamed ie6 3. Windows 2000 with slipstreamed dx9 and ie6 any takers? get a boot disk from http://www.vorck.com/2ksp5.html#14 remember that in many cases, using DOS requires that the drive be formatted in FAT32. make sure your cdrom drive is recognized (most DOS bootdisks will do this). then view this step http://www.vorck.com/2ksp5.html#23 obviously you will be ignoring the part of my instructions that say 'don't boot from dos if you've slipstreamed dx9' because that's the goal here. also, we're NOT testing the whole 'make four windows floppies and install from them' because, well, who the heck bothers with that? thanks for the assist, whoever wants to try this...
  15. @kukris - about making sure if slipstreaming went well, i can guarantee to you that if you're using the EN files, it _will_ go fine. i can help you test though; see an email from me.
  16. tomcat76, the problem is with webvw.dll. try putting a SP4 version in the "FIX" folder. it will be copied absolutely last. somewhere in some hotfix MS issued for Dutch builds is a faulty version of this file. or, i suppose, given time i could write a webview killer (my files do this but separating out webview would take a bit of time).
  17. @tomcat76 ...who this revision is unoffically named after? i want a screencap of your script error. in png. you can email it to me if you like (click on my username to get the email addy). do you still get it when you turn off web views? script errors can happen with HTML or shell files trying to decode an .HTT file (webview files, normally hidden). i want to see if it's one of those. btw: thanks for that info on the xp files. didn't know that, thought it was only a bootup speed issue. @mudpit - in other words, what tommyp is saying is that it's a tradeoff. you either: 1. let HFSLIP use the SP4 bug free versions of the HAL and SCSI files and take a risk that Windows Update might report that the entire Rollup is not applied, or 2. or use the new, buggy versions of these two files from MS' rollup and have Windows Update report that everything's fine and there is nothing to install. truth be told, we need to figure out if Windows Update would indeed give this as a recommended update. i have the original rollup files because i'm lazy and when i go to http://windowsupdate.62nds.com i don't get the rollup as recommended. but because the new windows update uses file scanning, we can't be sure if this situation may change at some point. All - two things. one, some of you have PM's from me about individual issues. Be sure to check your MSFN inbox for those! two, and this is a serious question, why is it that in the unattended forum, folks don't really seem to be too interested in HFSLIP? I'm trying to avoid doing a "competition" thing, but am seriously wondering. I mean, slipstreaming and renaming and switches and all that modding by hand... Why? The potential for getting things wrong is huge, and once you've done it once, you "get" it... Just curious.
  18. Updated for the Tomcat76 fix.
  19. Tonight's entertainment. So I have access to email and I see HFSLIP's update. But I am on a public terminal and trying to use FTP... No problem... uh-oh, I'm on XP. I hate XP. Anyway. So I'm trying and trying but Windows Firewall has been set up to block port 21 and I am one admin of many but they also have content filtering software on this machine. So I figure I can engineer a way to upload the file to my server after I mess around with things, but ultimately, I can't -- now I know this isn't a blog, but you'll get a kick out of hearing the reason why I didn't get to unblock FTP and upload the new version tonight. Just as I am trying to figure out how to unblock every gaddanged thing to FTP the update, a 911 call comes in. Now, I work in IT and I'm a writer working in an industry related to finance. But I also work for two ambulance companies. So I respond for a suicidal male at the police department claiming to have taken a bunch of tranquilziers and a pint of alcohol. It's 2am, I am tired, but up to the challenge. I talk with him and after a search for sharp objects the police release him to us, and we get him in our ambulance. I'm thinking tranquilizers, so respiratory arrest or compromise is a possibility and maybe I want to intubate, and I definately want to establish an IV but he's jittery and just squirming, and unclicks the restraints on the cot. I convince him that's not in anyone's best interest... they're there for his safety. He's way too animated for me to do an IV and he's just too hyped up, so I'm thinking those weren't tranquilzers -- he lied. Thankfully, because I know how to de-escalate many drug abusers, he cooperates with me and settles down. We wheel him into the Emergency Room, they hear he took pills and announce that we're to take him to the psychiatric unit. Boom, the guy decides he's gonna bail. He hops off the cot. Oh, JOY. With dozens of hospital patients in earshot, he unleashes a tirade of expletives and starts swinging. Probably coke, and I don't mean the drink... took four of us to get him down. <sighs> I'm beat and I just wanna go to bed So... the update will have to wait until I am home tomorrow at about 11am Eastern.
  20. Gentlemen - this is VERY possible with Windows XP! Don't use my Windows 2000 regcleaner, it will mess up XP (I had someone try once). What you need to do... Start, Run, Regedit Find keys ON A FRESH INSTALL that are useless. Tell me those values... email them to me. (Click on the profile, etc). I will go into my XP virtual machine, and I will work on collecting key values for a remover. Here's the thing... I'd like a partner or two to help split the work. It's a big registry, but like Jeremy says, with that much stuff out, the computer will be a bit faster and a few megs lighter (remember, the keys store values, so it's a LOT more than what you might think!) If we have keys 1 through 100, I'd want to take keys 1-30, have a partner take 31-60, and have someone else take 61-100. That way work gets done faster. I will write the remover. I need Registry savvy volunteers -- PM me-- and some time (after all I also do work on the HFSLIP and other projects, I have to balance my time ) Any takers? I need some experts and we can get the ball rolling on this as a side project. I don't use XP but I'd love to contribute to this thread just as defiance to nLite haters and defiance to Microsoft
  21. @saugatak - You are correct about that file, I will look into it... Unfortunately, the individual language files are _also_ installed in TXTSETUP and LAYOUT, etc, so they would have to all be commented out. I don't really want to go down that road since so many of my fileset users are international, but I will take a look further into language elimination. @Tomcat76 - MDAC is no longer required... At this point there are a number of little things that are in the new instructions but that I did not bring to anyone's attention. For example, you are correct about accidentally switching 3 and 4 (thanks for pointing that out). Also, one new file, OEEXCEP.CAB, is needed for slipstreaming IE6 into Win2k. Little things like this... You guys that have been users since day one will get thrown off with these little changes, and I apologize for not documenting those
  22. @gdogg - no, not just services. i mean megs and megs of useless keys. like this (windows 2000 example). Scroll down to "[keys.del]"
  23. Tomcat76 - Hmmm... I just downloaded to be sure; it's version "HFSLIP_50814.CMD" for me...
  24. win2k3 experts, is there a site that lists ALL of the hotfixes for win2k3? Everyone seems to cover 2k and xp only.
  25. Which WGA solution do you use? (don't call it disable, guys, that sounds almost criminal ) I use the following reg key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Settings\{17492023-C23A-453E-A040-C7C580BBF700}] "Version"="*" "Flags"=dword:[TOP SECRET VALUE I CANT DISCLOSE LEGALLY!! OMG!!ONEONE]
